(1) Senior General Than Shwe offers provisions to  members of the Sangha and nuns in Myeik
 
YANGON, 20 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe attended the  ceremony to offer provisions to members of the Sangha, nuns and Sarthintaiks  at Buddha Sasana Beikmandaw of Laykyun Hsime Pagoda in Myeik this morning.

Chairman of Township Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sankyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta  Pandhavamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Then, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.
 
Senior General Than Shwe offered rice and alms to Mahasi Buddha Sasanasu  Yeiktha Sayadaw Agga Maha Kammahtanasariya Bhaddanta Asaba.

The Secretary-2, the Secretary-3 and party offered rice and alms to the  Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

The Secretary-2 also presented rice to nuns.

Then, merits gained for good deeds were shared.


(2) Senior General Than Shwe gives guidance on progress  of Myeik and Palaw townships
 
YANGON, 20 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected  development of Myeik and Palaw townships in Taninthayi Division today.

This morning, Senior General Than Shwe met Tatmadawmen and families of Myeik  Station at Coastal Region Command in Myeik Township.

At Kywegu village in the township, the Senior General and party observed the  chosen site to build Kywegu-Kyaukphya Bridge.

Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and Minister for  Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun briefed them on the selection of the project  site, survey and bridge designing.

Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance.
 
Located on Dawei-Myeik-Kawthoung Road, the bridge on Kyaukphya River will be  over 3,000 feet long. Completion of the bridge will ensure better and smooth  transport in the region.

On arrival at Palaw Township, the Senior General and party were welcomed by  Staff Officer (Grade-1 ) of Coastal Region Command Lt-Col Tun On,  departmental personnel and local authorities.

After inspecting the town, the Senior General met Tatmadawmen and families at  the regional battalion.
 
The Senior General then cordially greeted departmental personnel who were at  tending a meeting with the ministers in Kanyodanyadana Hall.

Chairman of Palaw Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Swe reported  on the regional, economic and transport situation of the township.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Mines  Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U  Soe Tha and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone gave suggestions.

Minister U Soe Tha, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races  and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and Minister for Science and  Technology U Thaung inspected the multimedia teaching centre and classrooms  at Palaw Township Basic Education High School. They also greeted teachers and  pupils.

At Palauk village in the township, the Senior General and party were  conducted around the village by Tactical Operation Commander Col Ohn Myint,  Commander of regional battalion Lt-Col Khin Maung Aye and officials.

During their visit to the regional battalion, the Senior General and party  were welcomed by Tatmadawmen and families.

(3) Use of modern teaching aids will produce more students possessing brilliant ability, intellectual power
 
YANGON, 20 Jan - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the opening of  multimedia teaching centres at basic education schools in Pathein Township,  Ayeyawady Division, today.

The Secretary-1 also unveiled the plaques marking the opening of the  multimedia classrooms.

Accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers Chief of Staff (Air), officia1s of  the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and  officials, left here for Pathein by Tatmadaw flight this morning.

On arrival at Pathein at 9 am they were welcomed by member of the State Peace  and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development  Council Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe,  military and civilian officials and members of Union Solidarity and  Development Association.
 
Multimedia classrooms were opened at No 2 Basic Education High School, No 1  Basic Education Middle and No 20 Basic Education Primary School in the  morning and afternoon at the respective schools attended by the Secretary-1  and party.

Local authorities, departmental personnel, the director-general of No 1 Basic  Education Department, members of USDA, social organizations, school boards of  trustees and parent-teacher association, donors, school heads and teachers  and their pupils were also present.

Headmistress Daw Tin Nwe Aye and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U  Chit Tin formally opened the multimedia classroom of No 2 BEHS.
 
The Secretary-1 and party then inspected closed circuit television studio,  computer application and E-mail electronic media, computer aided instruction  language lab, project media, printed media (reading corner), closed circuit  television unit and domestic science, art and music rooms.
 
Secretary of the School Board of Trustees U Nay Win and Headmistress Daw Tin  Nwe Aye explained efforts to open the multimedia class-room.

Headmistress Daw San San Htay and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U  Than Tun formally opened the multimedia classroom of No 1 BEMS.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the different sectors of the  multimedia-classroom and the skill of students.

U Than Tun and Daw San San Htay explained efforts to open the rnultimedia  classroom and uplift the all-round education standards and moral conducts of  students.

Headmaster U Htay Win and Chairman of School Broad of Trustees U Tin Ohn  formally opened the multimedia classroom at No 20 BEPM.

Accompanied by officials, the Secretary-1 inspected various sections of the  multimedia classroom.

U Htay Win and U Tin Ohn gave speeches.

On arrival at Pathein Glass Factory, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed  by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win,  Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industry U Than Shwe and staff.

Minister U Aung Thaung briefed them on history of the factory, major  renovation of machines, current production capacity and operations and the  factory manager on renovation of kilns.

The Secretary-1 and party then inspected the factory.

They arrived back here in the evening.


(4) Secretary 1 receives Minister at President’s Office of LPDR

YANGON, 20 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister at the President’s Office Mr Soubanh  Srithirath of Lao People’s Democratic Republic and party at Dagon Yeiktha of  the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador LPDR Mr Ly Bounkham.

(5) Meeting held to coordinate compilation of Myanma traditional folk songs and national races songs
 
YANGON, 20 Jan - The first coordination meeting on compiling Myanma  traditional folk songs and national races songs was held at Myanma Radio and  Television on Pyay Road this afternoon with an add held Myanmar Minister for  Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

The minister spoke of compiling Myanma traditional folk songs and national  races songs.

He also said that if literary, art and music organizations cooperate together  with Thabin Asiayon and Motion Picture Asiayon, folk songs and national races  songs will soon emerge, and added that it is also necessary to compile  traditional songs and dances of national races.

The minister encourage all to contribute to the discussions.

Then, general round of discussion followed.

The group for compiling Myanma traditional folk songs and the group for  compiling national races songs were formed, and duties were assigned .

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


(6) Minister meets Dy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran

YANGON, 20 Jan - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met a delegation  led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Mr Amin Zadeh who called at  his office at 11 am today.


(7) Chinese cultural delegation arrives

YANGON, 20 Jan - Under the cultural exchange programme between Myanmar and  the People’s Republic of China, a five-member cultural delegation of PRC  arrived here by air this evening.

The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by officials of  Fine Arts Department, Ministry of Culture and Chinese Embassy.

(8) 29 Thinbawinn Village-tract NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 20 Jan - Twenty-nine members resigned from the National League for  Democracy of Thinbawinn Village-tract in Shwegu Township, Kachin State.

Twenty-nine members of Thinbawinn Village-track ,NLD in Shwegu Township,  Kachin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation  to Thinbawinn Village-track Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission  Office in Shwegu Township and the party concerned on 15 September 1999 as  they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
