Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance, saying edible crop is the, most important crop in Myanmar after paddy. The nation has not achieved success as expected though efforts are being made with various means in boosting edible oil crop cultivation and per acre yield.

The nation at present is importing edible oil at a cost of US $ 60 million a year. The cost of building a major bridge on Ayeyawady River is only US $ 8 million, thus, for the money used in importing edible oil, the nation can build four to six major bridges.

Extended cultivation of edible oil crops is facing difficulties for certain reasons. National entrepreneurs have been permitted to reclaim land in Taninthayi Division, which has favourable climate, in putting more land under oil palm. As palm oil can be used as raw material in industries also, it is required to extend oil palm cultivated areas.

The government is rendering assistance for the convenience and success of oil palm cultivation in the nation.

As is known to all, the government is striving with greater momentum for the betterment of transport in the region. All should make efforts for successful implementation of the project to extend oil palm cultivation in Taninthayi Division, as it will benefit both the nation and the entrepreneurs.

Success and prosperity of national entrepreneurs is required for the uplift of socio-economic life of the nation as the capital of entrepreneurs can be said the nation s wealth.

The economic power-house should be in the hands of national entrepreneurs for the nation to be politically and economically independent.

The government is nurturing the national entrepreneurs in enabling them to stand firmly with broad political, economic and national outlook. Efforts should be made for the success of oil palm cultivation of the Division with a view to producing sufficient amount of edible oil in the nation, developing the Division and the living standards of the people and ensuring long-term benefit of the national entrepreneurs.

As Ayeyawady Division is the rice bowl of the nation, efforts are required for Taninthayi Division to become the oil bowl.
