(1) Secretary-1 inspects Taungyama Dam Project and 99 reservoirs project in Magway Division

YANGON, 16 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, yesterday morning left the Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, by helicopter and arrived at Taungyama Dam Project near Tabya Village in Myaing Township, Magway Division at 12.15 pm.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and acting Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win reported on the purpose of Taungyama Dam Project, the location of the dam, facts about the project and agricultural under-takings in irrigated areas.

The Secretary-1.discussed with regional authorities and departmental officials on matters related to kinds of crops, agriculture, education and health, and attended to requirements.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the control tower and the spillway of Taungyama Dam.

Taungyama Dam is situated on Taungyama Creek about 13 miles south-west of Pale near Tabya Village in Myaing Township, Magway Division.

The embankment, built of earth, is 90 feet high and 5,670 feet long.  The water storage capacity is 17,040 acre feet.  The main canal is 11.84-mile long, and there are 36 44-mile-long small canals. The dam can irrigate 7,000 acres of land.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Yinmabin in Monywa District.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions on systematic use of natural water resources, and urged regional authorities to provide systematic supervision to make sure that natural water resources are used properly.

The Secretary-1 then attended to requirements of health and education.

After that, the Secretary-1 met with members of Ward and Village Peace and Development Councils, and gave instructions on systematic use of water and cultivation of crops suitable to the region.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected over-flowing wells and Reservoir R-l .

Due to overflowing wells and 99 reservoirs, 14 village-tracts from Ywathaya and its environs can cultivate crops on 8,181 acres of land.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party went to Shwebo.

They were welcomed there by members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Then, they proceeded to the site of Shwebon Yadana Mingalar Palace Reconstruction Project.

In the briefing hall, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council reported on matters related to the project.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions, and inspected the project.

The Secretary-1 and party observed the monument of King Alaung-mintaya.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the opening ceremony of the multimedia teaching centre of No 1 Basic Education High School in Shwebo.

In the evening, the Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Maha Muni Buddha Image in Mandalay, and offered Shwethingan to the Buddha Image.

(2) Secretary-1 attends initial ceremony for construction of three storey building of PhaungdawU (Parahita) Monastic Education Middle School

YANGON, 16 Jan - The stake driving ceremony for the construction of three-storey building of PhaungdawU (Parahita) Monastic Education Middle School on Dawnabwa Ward in Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay  held at the school yesterday morning, was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Director of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Min Kyi acted as master of ceremonies.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Five Precepts from Chairman of Mandalay Division Sangha Nayaka Committee Mya Taungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Sasanabhivarnsa.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws.

Well-wishers U Than Aung-Daw Tin Tin Myaing of PyinOoLwin District presented K 3 million, U Chit Yan and family (Chityan Kyaunghsaung) of Industry-l K 100,000, U Htay Aung-Daw Hla Hla and family (Kyaw Zin Htet Saw Mill) K 50,000, Chairman of Aungmyaythazan Township Cooperative Society U Khin Maung Than K 50,000, U Aung Kyaw Myint-Daw Phyu Phyu Kyaw (Mudita family) K 50,000 and U Myo Tint and wife K 30,000 to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt for the construction of three-storey building of PhaungdawU (Parahita) Monastic Education Middle School.
 
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Education U Than Aung Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Boar Dr Than Nyunt and Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo drove the stakes and sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the school.

The school will be constructed with the capital of US $ 80,000 provided by Japanese Government and people Myanmar Government and contributions of Myanmar well-wishers.


(3) Multimedia Teaching Centre opens at No 1 BEHS in Shwebo
 
YANGON, 16 Jan - Multimedia Teaching Centre opened at No 1 Basic Education High School in Shwebo, Sagaing Division on 15 January was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Headmistress Daw Swe Maw Maw and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Kyaw Lay formally opened the Multimedia Teaching Centre.

The Secretary-l then formally unveiled the plaque Multimedia Teaching Centre.

Secretary-1 and party  then inspected computer aided instruction room, computer skill room, audio's-visual room, audio room, art room, drawing room and prayer hall and skill of students.

The Secretary-1 and party had photo taken together with members of School Board of Trustees of Nos 1, 2 and 3 Basic Education High School, members of PTA, well-wishers, school heads and students.

The Secretary-1 inspected computer printing and documentary photos of opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre were presented to the Secretary-1.

(4) OPV given to children in Mandalay

YANGON, 16 Jan - A ceremony to launch the second round  of the Fifth Year National Immunization Day was held at the hall of Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association in Mandalay this morning, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary- l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

First, Patron of Mandalay Division MCWASC Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee Dr Thein Tun launched the ceremony.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party and guests gave oral polio vaccine to children under-five.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to Mandalay Station Hall and gave OPV to the children.

A total of 791,968 children were given OPV at 6,212 places in Mandalay Division to mark the second round of the Fifth Year National Immunization Day.


(5) Minister meets officials and staff in Mandalay

YANGON, 16 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, accompanied by Vice-Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin and officials, met staff and officials of the ministry at Mandalay Division Internal Revenue Office yesterday afternoon.

Officials reported to the minister on their progress work.

The minister attended to their needs.

Then Minister U Khin Maung Thein explained about the projects being implemented by the State and future tasks.

He urged them to carry out their assigned duties in accord with the national objectives.


(6) Vitamin A given to children on Fifth Year National Immunization Days
 
YANGON, 16 Jan - A ceremony to give to children vitamin A for the second round of Fifth Year National Immunization Day was held at International Business Centre this morning, with an address by member of National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said oral polio vaccine was given to children with the aim of eradication of polio after designating National Immunization Days and this time arrangements were made to give vitamin A pills, important nutrients which prevent infectious diseases.

He said giving vitamin A to children started in 1990 under the vitamin A deficiency prevention project of Health Department.

The minister spoke of decrease in the rate of eye disease from 0.6 percent in 1992 to 0.23 per cent in 1997 by feeding vitamin A.

The minister and guests gave vitamin A and oral polio vaccine to 100 children under five and presented gifts to them.

YANGON, 16 Jan - The three-member delegation from the Lao People's Democratic Republic led by Minister at the LPDR President's Office Mr Soubanh Srithirath, arrived here by air this evening.


(8) OPV, Vitamin A given on Fifth Year National Immunization Day

YANGON, 16 Jan - Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, patron of Yangon Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association , wife of Minister for Health, wife of Deputy Minister for Health wife of Director of Medical Services, Director-General of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) and wife, executive member of Yangon Division Union Solidarity and Development Association, Yangon Division General Administration Department and officials of the Ministry of Health, arrived at Pre-Primary School No 1 in Bahan Township where Fifth Year National Immunization Days (Second Time) held, this morning.

The OPV and vitamin A were given to 4,928 children under five in Bahan Township.

Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party went to Zagwe Taung Ward in Thingangyun Township.

The OPV and vitamin A were given to 12,887 children under five in Thingangyun Township.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party gave Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) and vitamin A to children under five.

The OPV and vitamin A were given to 15,445 children under five in Thanlyin Township.

(9) 89 members of Ganeik Village NLD, Labutta Township  resign of own accord

YANGON, 16 Jan - Eighty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ganeik Village, Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division.
 
Eight-nine members of Ganeik Village NLD, Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Off1ce and the party concerned on 16 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
