(1) Duties assigned to beans and pulses cultivation areas including Sagaing Division to extend pedisein, matpe and pesinngon cultivationYANGON, 12 Jan-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye met officials, farmers and entrepreneurs at North-West Command in Monywa yesterday.
In addressing members of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council, division-level officials, officials of Sagaing, Shwebo, Monywa, Kalay and Katha Districts and 20 townships, industrialists and entrepreneurs, the General said nations with their respective objectives are striving with added momentum for economic progress starting from the New Year.
It is required to accelerate the momentum of economic development of Myanmar. It is now in the fourth year of the five-year short-term economic plan which began in 1996-97. The nation is gaining success in implementing the economic plan, expecting to achieve more progress than the estimated economic development rate. If all continue to strive with greater momentum in the fiscal 2000-2001 which is the final year of the economic plan the nation will be able to keep abreast with the developing neighbors.
Thus, harmonious efforts are required for the nation's agricultural and industrial sectors to gain more development.
Arrangements are in progress in extending cultivation of paddy which is the nation' s main crop. Extra impetus is being given in putting 18 million acres under paddy 14 million acres under monsoon paddy and four million acres under summer paddy and in raising per acre yield to reach 100 baskets.
Such efforts to extend paddy cultivation will ensure adequate food for the nation till the population reaches 100 million mark and to export the surplus produce.Similarly, cultivation of cotton, sugarcane, beans and corn are being extended as the main ,crops of the nation. Due to such efforts beans and pulses such as pedisein, matpe and pesinngon are fetching better prices in the international market.
Duties have been assigned to beans and pulses growing areas including Sagaing Division to extend cultivation of the three kinds of beans and pulses crops. Arrangements are being made to extend cultivation of the three kinds of beans and pulses at the suitable areas without affecting the cultivation of other major crops.
In encouraging the beans and pulses farmers, the nation is buying the crops on advanced payments basis. Permission will be granted to entrepreneurs to freely buy and export beans and pulses. The nation will be developed only when there is progress in the private sector. National entrepreneurs should strive for development of their business as well as the national economy.
The government is endeavouring for progress of the agricultural and industrial sectors. Encouragement is being given to national entrepreneurs who have capital and expertise to take part more in the two sectors. All should strive for the advancement of the industrial sector for national development. Way is being paved to extend land border trade in addition to the international maritime trade. Efforts should be made for the nation's exports to gain deserving prices in border trade.
In conclusion, the General stressed the need to actively strive together with the government for national progress with added momentum. He then cordially greeted them.
Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint said the nation had had to live under subjugation for over 100 years: and the nation could not reach normal situation for nearly 50 years after regaining independence due to evil legacy of colonialists.
After the nation had passed these years, the present government is able to make efforts for the nation to gain development and to reach the normal route. In so doing, the government laid down Our Three Main National Causes in warding off attempts of neo-colonialists to dominate and enslave the nation. The nation is enjoying favourable conditions and is on the right track due to step-by-step implementation of the 12 objectives,Efforts should be made with the aim of becoming a forefront country in South-East Asia within a decade by the year 2010. Only then can the objective emergence of a peaceful, pleasant, developed and modern nation be realized practically.
After explaining the nation's situation, he stressed the need to strive for progress of agriculture based on rich soil and water resources, for the nation to become the main beans and pulses exporter to earn more foreign exchange, elaborating on the implementation of the State's objectives for advancement of industries, stability of consumer prices and reducing transport charges. A representative of beans and pulses merchants, beans and pulses farmers, paddy farmers and industrialists of Monywa District reported on beans and pulses trade and cultivation, paddy cultivation and industries and local authorities of Sagaing, Shwebo, Monywa, Kalay and Katha Districts on agricultural and regional developments region wise.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha explained national economic developments, tasks for regional progress, cultivation and production of beans, economic achievements in Sagaing Division in 1999-2000, arrangements to buy beans, export and import business, arrangements to nurture intellectual and technicians required in building a peaceful, pleasant, developed and modern nation and extension of roads and bridges in States and Divisions.
The Secretary-3 stressed the need to strive for putting land under cold season beans to the full, reduce crop failures and to boost crop produce. Chairman of Chin State Peace and Development Council Col Hla Tun and officials, the General helicoptered to Mindat in,Chin State.
On arrival there the General and party were welcomed by military and civilian officials. After meeting Tatmadawmen and families at a regional battalion, they paid respects to Sayadaws led by Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasiri and Theravada Missionary Sayadaw Bhaddanta Neyadhamma at Taungbulu Hill Missionary Monastery.
They then met students of Border Area Development School and local people.At the meeting with departmental personnel and town elders, the General explained the purpose of his visit to Chin State. At Kyaukhtu in Hsaw Township, Magway Division, the General and party inspected Kyaukhtu Airport. They arrived back here at 4 pm.
(2) Secretary-1 calls for efforts to increase tourist arrivalsYANGON 12 Jan-Tourism Development Management Committee held its Meeting 1/2000 at Strand Hotel this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of Tourism Development Management Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Present on the occasion were the ministers, the Yangon Mayor, the deputy ministers, members of Tourism Development Management Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials.
The Secretary-1 said the meeting was to lay down future tasks for development of tourism industry beginning from the year 2000 and tourist arrivals are encouraging in the early part of the year.
He said tourism in Myanmar should have achieved more progress than the current extent as Myanmar is now stable and peaceful.
He elaborated on many places of interest that could attract tourists: ancient cultural heritage, characteristics of national races, beaches, nature tourism, cruise tours along Ayeyawady River, existence of primates 40 million years ago, evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, ancient Pyu cities and Bagan city of high standard.
He said, Myanmar is stable and peaceful and has better economic foundations, advanced hotels and transport facilities. However, he added , there is destructive group that is opposing every endeavours of the government is sending fabricated news to international community. The group dispatched fabricated news to external organizations and media which provided assistance to them, he said.
Tourism industry in Myanmar has not come up to the expectation due to the spread of fabricated news, he said. He spoke on success of welcoming ceremonies ushering in the new millennium organized by tour operators held in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Innlay and Chaungtha and presentation of traditional culture of national races.
He pointed out that destructive elements would continue to destroy the efforts for development of tourism by government and private local tour operators.He said ways and means are to be sought to disseminate correct news and real situation in Myanmar through the tourists and world media.
Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported on hotel industry with foreign investment, matters relating to internal hotels, tourist arrivals, endeavours for development of border area tourism, advertisement of tourism, measures for promotion of Mekong River valley tourism, efforts for development of human resources development and participation in tourism authority board of ASEAN.
Officials then took part in the discussions. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 said development of tourism is a foreign exchange earning business and it is also the contributing task to witness the true situation in Myanmar. Destructive elements are spreading fabricated news about Myanmar saying there is no security and tranquillity, plenty of diseases and it is unsuitable for tourists to visit. He called for making efforts for increasing tourist arrivals.
(3) Secretary-2, Secretary-3 attend Indian cultural dance performance
YANGON, 12 Jan -The Indian cultural dance troupe led by artiste Pandit Birju Maharaj in commemoration of the 50th founding anniversary of India presented its "Kathak" dance at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road at 6.30 pm today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, and Ambassador of India to Myanmar Mr Shyam Saran and wife, ambassadors and their wives of foreign embassies in Myanmar, counsellor and guests.
After the ceremony, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran presented gifts to the troupe.
(4) Central Supervisory Committee for Communication Policy holds 10th MeetingYANGON, 12 Jan- The 10th Meeting of Central Supervisory Committee for Communication Policy took place at the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon.Joint Secretary of the Committee General Staff Officer (Grade-1) Lt-Col Yin Maung Sein of the Office of Commander-in-Chief (Army) present the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved.
Secretary-2 Lt- Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on their reports and spoke of the need to seek means for smoother communication services as it is necessary to ensure smooth transport and communication for development of the nation.

(5) Myanmar Health Research Congress continues
YANGON, 12 Jan-Myanmar Health Research Congress continued for the third day at Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar) on Ziwaka Road this morning.
The second day session was presided over by Professor Col Ye Thway of Medicine Department of Defence Services Institute of Medicine, Deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Soe Aung, Professor Dr Maung Maung Wint of Medicine Department of Institute of Medicine-1, Professor Dr Kyi Kyi Thin of Microbiology Department of IM-I, Professor Dr Win Naing of Prevention and Social Medicine Department of IM-2 and retired Director U Hla Pe of Medical Research Department.
Resource persons submitted 15 papers and participants took part in the discussions.
(6) Minister inspects production of oil at Htaukshabin oil field
YANGON, 12 Jan-Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by officials, rnet general managers and officials of oil field under the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise at the meeting hall of Mann oil field on 10 and 11 January. The minister gave instructions.Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi and party went to Htaukshabin oil field where they inspected production.
(7) Union Day Observance Management Committee meets
YANGON, 12 Jan-The 53rd Anniversary Union Day Observance Management Committee held a meeting this afternoon at Pyithu Hluttaw Office, addressed by Chairman of the committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than. Secretary of the committee Director-General of Pyithu Hluttaw Office U Myint Thein reported on formation of subcommittees and assignment of duties.
The respective subcommittees reported on their plans.Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave suggestions. Also present were members of the Management Committee, subcommittees and officials.
(8) Multimedia classroom for children opened at Pre-Primary School No 1, Bahan
YANGON, 12 Jan- The multimedia classroom for children of Pre-Primary School No I in Bahan Township was opened at the school this morning, attended by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.Also present were Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director-General of Social Welfare Department U Sit Myaing, Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi, Deputy Director-General of Fire Services Department U Aung Soe, heads of pre-primary schools in Yangon Division, teachers, parents and well-wishers.
Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa spoke on the occasion, saying to SWD, under the supervision of the ministry, is implementing the eight social tasks of the ministry, and of the social tasks, nursing the children is an important task as children ax the basic human resource.
Multimedia classrooms would much benefit the children, and the present multimedia classroom emerged due to the collaborative efforts of departmental officials and well-wishers, he said and thanked them.
The minister then accepted K450,000 including K 100,000 of SWD and a 21-inch TV from well-wishers.
The minister and Patron of Parent-Teacher Association U Maung Aye formally opened the classroom.
SWD is carrying out tasks for all-round development of children and will continue to open the similar classrooms in cooperation with Parent Teacher Association and well-wishers.

(9) National Convention Convening Commission meets
YANGON, 12 Jan-National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 4 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and commission members.
Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting. National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to National Convention.
Members of National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.
(10) Minister inspects railroads, bridges
YANGON, 12 Jan -Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by engineers and officials of Myanmar Rail Division No 3, 4, 5 and 6 inspected railroads, bridges and railway stations for repairs along Yangon and Mandalay railroad yesterday. The minister gave instructions to officials.
(11) 30 Pyay NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 12 Jan-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyay Township, Bago Division.
Thirty members of Pyay Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office-and the party concerned on 9 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
