(1) Secretary-1 addresses opening of Health Research Paper Reading Session

YANGON, 10 Jan - Health Research Paper Reading Session of the Ministry of Health was opened at the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) this morning with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were ministers, the Yangon Mayor, the deputy minister for health, the director of Medical Services, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, personnel of social organizations, directors-general, rectors, advisors, deputy directors-general, professors, directors and medical superintendents of the Ministry of Health, researchers, resource persons and guests.

The Secretary-1 and party the viewed the posters displayed at the opening ceremony.


(2) Myanmar Football Foundation urged to render assistance to former Myanmar selected footballers, facing financial hardships

YANGON, 10 Jan - Myanmar National Olympic Council held a meeting this afternoon at National Indoor Stadium in Thingangyun for uplifting the standard of Myanmar soccer,with an address by Chairman of MNOC Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l looked into the requirements, speaking of the need to implement the plans with zeal, goodwill, spirit, training and perseverance for raising the standard of Myanmar football, to improve the stamina, fitness and spirit of new generation youth footballers, to organize youth soccer matches and town-wise matches for emergence of talented footballers, to bring out talented footballers State/Division-wise, for the respective ministries to nurture new generation footballers from the clubs, to choose national selections correctly, to report the interesting soccer matches from dailies and TV, for Myanmar Football Foundation to render assistance to former Myanmar selected footballers, who are facing financial hardships, for the Ministry of Sports to take the advice of old footballers and to have cordial relations among the managers, coaches and footballers.  He said the management sector should implement the work as the State is rendering assistance to uplift the standard of Myanmar soccer and the athlet es should also strive for the Myanmar soccer to reach the Golden Age again.



(3) Seminar on Business Development of Fishery Cooperatives in Myanmar held

YANGON, 10 Jan - The Seminar on Business Development of Fishery Cooperatives in Myanmar jointly organized by International Cooperative Fisheries Organization(ICFO\O) of International Cooperative Alliance and the Central Cooperative Society of Myanmar was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Finance and Revenue, Minister for Cooperatives, Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Minister for Labour, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Minister Mr Yoshihiko Kamo of the Japanese Embassy, Directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Cooperatives, officials of the Central Cooperative Society, Mr Masaaki Sato and officials of ICA and ICFO, officials of fisheries cooperative societies and guests.

Then, Minister Mr Yoshihiko Kamo of the Japanese Embassy, Secretary Mr Masaaki Sato of International Cooperative Fisheries Organization (ICFO) of International Cooperative Alliance and Director-General U Maung Hti of Cooperative Department extended greetings.

Afterwards, a general round of discussions followed.

The seminar will be held up to 13 January.  Papers related to the development of fishery cooperatives in Myanmar will be presented to the seminar.


(4) Minister leaves for the Philippines

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel left here by air this morning to attend the Ninth Ministerial Level Economic Cooperation Meeting of six countries in the Mekong Region in Manila, the Philippines, from 11 to 13 January.

(5) Basic Course on GATT Valuation Agreement begins

YANGON, 10 Jan - Basic Training Course No 8 on the GATT Valuation. Agreement of the Customs Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue opened this morning at Customs Training School.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein said custom is vital for progress of national economy and trade.

Myanmar is a member of ASEAN as well as World Trade Organization (WTO); and it has agreed to use the GATT valuation system.

Also present were Deputy Minister , Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar , Director-General of Customs Department, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue and trainees.

Forty trainees are attending the two-week course.


(6)Minister for Industry-1 inspects factories in Mandalay, Bago Divisions
 
YANGON, 10 Jan - EC member of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Chairman of Myingyan District Peace and Development Council and officials, inspected multimedia teaching centre of Welaung Basic Education High School in Mandalay Division on & January.

The minister gave instructions on teaching with the use of multimedia teaching equipment in schools in Taungtha Township.

CEC member U Aung Thaung inspected construction of Atula Beikmandaw in Atulakayi Kyaungtaik.  He paid respects to members of the Sangha led by Sayadaw U Nagavamsa.

U Aung Thaung inspected sales of products of the Ministry of Industry-l at the Myatshwedagon Pagoda Festival in Kyaukpadaung Township.

The minister and Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected Dyeing and Printing Factory in Magway.

Yesterday, the minister and Managing Director of Myanma Textile Industries U Than Shwe inspected major repair of No 2 kiln with the assistance of Japanese experts at Thayet Cement Plant.

The minister and part inspected major repair of assembly line for production with the help of experts from Yunnan Machinery and Equipment and Export Corporation (YMEC) and construction of No 3 Cement Plant.

The minister and party went to Shwedaung and discussed boosting production and distribution of quality products to the people at Textile and Finishing Plant.

The minister discussed progress of the factory and distribution of high quality garments.

The minister also inspected Thayawady Ceramics Factory.


(7) Minister for Health meets WHO Senior Regional Advisers

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Senior Regional Adviser (Malaria) Dr Orlov and Regional Adviser (Essential Drugs) Dr Kin Shein of South East Asia Regional Director's Office of World Health Organization together with WHO Resident Representative Dr Agostino Borra at his office this after noon.

Also present-were officials of the ministry.

(8) Minister meets Tokai Bank officials

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein receive& General Manager Mr Ogasawara of Tokai Bank Ltd of Japan and part at his office this afternoon.

Also present was Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar.


(9)Minister for Transport tours Rakhine State

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority, Managing Director of Inland Water Transport and officials, arrived at Kyaukpyu, Rakhine State,.on 8 January morning.

The minister heard reports on renovation of Kyaukpyu Airport and tasks for regional development at the airport.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected the airport, and gave instructions on renovation work.

Then, the minister and party went to Ramanya Dredger at Kyaukpyu (Ngalapwe) Por under Myanma Port Authority.

Officials reported on matters related to the port and dredging work.

The minister save instructions on timely completion of the tasks and systematic use of the budget.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected Tattaung Port.

Yesterday morning, the minister and party, together with officials of An Station, inspected An Airport Project.

Officials reported on the project, and the minister gave instructions.

(10)  Minister meets Charge d' Affaires of Embassy of Bangladesh

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Charge d'Affaires ai of Embassy of Bangladesh Mr Muhammad Azizul Haque at his office this morning.

Also present were Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department and officials.


(11) Minister inspects KhinU-YeU railroad

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and officials inspected KhinU-YeU railroad section on 7 January.

The minister met engineers at the project office for construction of bridge across Mu River on Budalin-YeU-KhinU Road and inspected work being undertaken and discussed future tasks.

On 8 January, the minister inspected construction of the bridge.

The minister inspected paving on KhinU-Budalin Road and construction of bridges.

The minister donated K 100,000 to Tentainyan Village Union Solidarity and Development Association.

He gave instructions after inspecting the station and the road.


(12)Myanma Posts and Telecommunications opens courses

YANGON, 10 Jan - Facsimile Operator Training Course, EWSD Engineering Course, Basic PCM Course and basic machinery maintenance course were opened at Telecommunication and Postal Training Centre of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications under the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this morning.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin attended.


(13)  Over 4,000 stimulant tables seized in Kengtung

YANGON, 10 Jan - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Sai Mauk, son of U Sai Yi, in Peinma region, No 3 Ward, Kengtung, Shan State (East), on 20 December .

The authorities nabbed owner o f the house; Sai Mauk, 40 and Sai Shan, 40, son of U Aik Pan and Kon Mar, 40, son of U Sai Yi of Wankyan Village, Kathtaik Village-tract, Kengtung, together with 4,114 WY brand stimulant tablets, a Yamaha DT cycle and a Honda Wave cycle used in trafficking the narcotic drugs.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Sub-stances Law.


(14)  303 NLD members of Kanni Village-tract, Ngaputaw, resign of their own accord

YANGON, 10 Jan - A ceremony to submit 303 resignations of Kanni Village-tract National League for Democracy, Ngaputaw Township, was held in Kanni Village on 19 September 1999.

Altogether 303 NLD members of Kanni Village-tract, Ngaputaw Township, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignations to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

A ceremony to collectively present resignation letters to Kanni Village-tract Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission of Ngaputaw Township was held in Kanni Village at I pm on 19 September 1999.

NLD member U Aye Kyaing of the village explained the reason and presented resignation letters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Win Myint.
