(1)Foreign Heads of State and Government send felicitations to Senior General Than Shwe
The following is the massageof felicitations from HE KH Abdurrahman Wahid, Presenident of the Republic of Indonesia  sent to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, on the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.
Your Excellency,

On behalf of the Government and People of the republic of Indonesia, I have the distinct honour of conveying to you and, through you, to the people of Myanmar, our heartiest felicitations on the auspicious occasion of the 52nd Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

I am greatly heartened to observe that over the years the close cooperative relationship between Myanmar and Indonesia has grown steadily. It is my fervent hope that our two countries will continue their close collaboration, particularly through the ASEAN framework, for the mutual benefit of our two friendly peoples as well as for the cause of peace and prosperity in our region.

(2) Indonesian Vice-President sends felicitations to General Maung Aye

The following is the message of felicitations from Her Excellency Madame Megawati Soekarnoputri, Vice-President of the Republic of Indonesia, to His Excellency General Maung Aye, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, on the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

"Your Excellency,

On the auspicious occasion of the 52nd Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar, it is a great privilege for me to convey to you my heartfelt felicitations.

Myanmar and Indonesia enjoy excellent bilateral relations and share many common concern and objectives both in regional and international affairs. I am, therefore, confident that in the years ahead, our two countries will find new opportunities to achieve further progress and prosperity.

(3)Construction commencement rites for Monastic Education School

YANGON, 5 Jan - Stakes were driven to mark the foundation-laying of two-storey Padauk Shwewa Monastic Education Primary School in the compound of Padauk Shwewa Monastery in Ward 5, Mayangon Township, Yangon Division, this morning.

Secretary-1 of the. State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt drove in the stake.

Patron of Padauk Shwewa Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pavara, ministers, Mayor of Yangon, deputy commander of Yangon Command, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, donors U Aung Ko Win and wife Agga Maha Siri Sudhammasingi Sudhammasingi Siha Sudhammasingi Daw Nang Than Htwe and guests.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay and the donor U Aung Ko Win drove in the stakes.

They then sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

The Secretary-l and party showered confetti to mark the successful completion of the ceremony.


(4)National Convention Convention Commission meets

YANGON, 5 Jan - National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and commission members.

Secretary of National Convention Convening Commission and members National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to National Convention.

Members of National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.

Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.


(5)Minister meets GM of MFPDC

YANGON, 5 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met General Manager of Myanmar Fertilizer  and Power Development Co (MFPDC) Mr Peter Longerich and party who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar .


(6)Minister meets Ambassador of Switzerland

YANGON, 5 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Ambassador of Switzerland Mr Bernard Freymond who called at his office at 4.15 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

(7)Mandalay Division wins 1st Upper Myanmar ISD T&F Tourney championship shield

YANGON, 5 Jan - Final events of the First Upper Myanmar ISD Track and Field Tournament took place at the Aungmye Mingala Sports Ground in Mandalay yesterday.

Among the spectators were Patron of the Leading Committee for Organising the Tournament Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, Mayor of Mandalay and wife, Deputy Commander and wife and officials.

Mandalay Division team won the championship shield with 579 points, sweeping 43 gold, 29 silver and 10 bronze and collected K 100,000.

Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials presented prizes to the winning teams.


(8)Commander attends Independence Day celebrations

YANGON, 5 Jan - The 52nd Anniversary Independence Day was observed at People's Sports Ground in Toungoo, Bago Division, on 4 January morning.

Present were Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Commander, senior military officers, chairmen of Toungoo District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel and local people totalling over 3,000.

The National Flag was hoisted at 4.20 am.

The ceremony to pay tribute to the National Flag was held at the same venue at 7 am.

The commander read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.

Accompanied by officials, the commander visited booths of horticulture exhibition.

The exhibition and festivities continue till 6 January.

(9)Commander attends 52nd Anniversary Independence Day of Mon State

YANGON, 5 Jan - The 52nd Anniversary Independence Day was held at Mawyawady Park, Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, yesterday Morning.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung, Deputy Commander, staff officers, commandant of battalions, Secretary and members of Mon State Peace and Development Council, chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, local national race leaders, local residents, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Associations, Union Solidarity and Development Association, Nurses Association, Red Cross Society and Fire Brigade, trainees, Education College and students totalling over 2000.

Those present saluted the State Flag.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung attended the prizes presentation ceremony to mark 52nd Anniversary Independence Day at Mon State Peace and Development Council Office at 9 am.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung and officials presented prizes to outstanding persons.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung cordially greeted those present.


(10)Independence Day observed in Pathein

YANGON, 5 Jan - The 52nd Anniversary Independence Day was observed at Kyauktaing Sports Ground in Pathein on 4 January morning.

Present were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander, senior officers of the command, commanders of stations, battalions and units, Secretary of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Maung, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, nurses, teachers and their pupils and local people totalling 5,000.

Those present paid tribute to the National Flag and the fallen leaders and Tatmadawmen.

The commander read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.


(11)Sittway observes Independence Day

YANGON, 5 Jan - The 52nd Anniversary Independence Day was observed in U Ottama Hall in Sittway on 4 January morning.

Present were Deputy Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen Aung Thein and wife, Patron of Rakhine State Maternal and Child Welfare Association and members, wives of staff officers of the command, departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, trainees of Nursing School and local people totalling over 500.

The deputy commander read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.

He then formally opened Independence Day Wall Poster Exhibition.


(12)  25 members resign from Pyay NLD of own accord

YANGON, 5 Jan - Twenty-five members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Pyay Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-five members of Pyay Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 9 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
