(1) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing host 52nd Independence Day Anniversary reception and banquetYANGON, 4 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing hosted the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day reception and banquet at the Pyithu Hluttaw on Pyay Road this evening.
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at the venue of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day reception and banquet at 6.30 pm.
The guests were entertained to the programme of songs by vocalists accompanied by Myanma Athan Modern Music Troupe during the bonquet.
After the bonquet, the guests were entertained to the programme of variety dances traditional dance solo, Nat Chin, the display on the song "Kyauk Hbwe Hpone Tan", equestrian dance, the display on the song "Lu Chun Lu Kaung" and Our nationalities by artistes of the Fine Arts Department, Ministry of Culture, in the Thabin Hall.
(2) Youths urged to safeguard independence, sovereignty, together with national people
YANGON, 4 Jan-A ceremony to present prizes to outstanding students in the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Commemorative Essay, Poem, TV Quiz and Computer Art Competition was held at the Pyithu Hluttaw building this evening, with an address by Chairman of Central Committee for Observing the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The Secretary-1 presented prizes to the students who won the first, the second and the third prizes in Basic Education Middle School level essay, poem and computer arts contests, BEHS level essay, poem, computer arts contests and TV quiz and University/College/Institute level essay and poem contests.
The Secretary-1 had photos taken together with the prize winning students.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction work at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, Tooth Relic Pagoda
YANGON, l4 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction work at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and construction of Aryonkhan Tazaung at Tooth Relic Pagoda this morning.
At the university, the Secretary-1 heard reports on the arrangements for construction of the Ordination Hall of the university presented by officials and gave instructions.
Then the Secretary-1 went to the Tooth Relic Pagoda at which he inspected arrangements for building of the Aryonkhan Tazaung.
Later, the Secretary-1 inspected building of the Administrative Office and the Library of the University and heard reports on progress in the construction and Myanmar architectural work presented by officials of Public Works.
The Secretary gave instructions.
(4) Foundation laid to build eight-storey ward at Jivitadana Sangha Hospital
YANGON, 4 Jan - Foundation was laid this morning to build an eight-storey building housing medical wards of Jivitadana Sangha Hospital in its compound.
Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt laid the foundation.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Minister for Mines, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Minister for Health, Minister for Religious Affairs, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Mayor, Deputy Commander and 7 laid the foundation.
The Secretary-1sprinkled scented water on the foundation.
Members of Administration Board and physicians also laid foundation.
The Secretary-1 showered confetti to mark the successful completion of the ceremony .
(5) Secretary-2 attends Nurseries-Market Festival in Myepadetha Park
YANGON, 4 Jan - Nurseries Market Festival of Myanma Agriculture Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation was opened at Palekyun in Myepadetha Park Bahan Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The Secretary-2 and party observed nine booths. The Secretary-2 cordially met delegates for Union Solidarity and Development Associations in states and divisions and gave instructions on distribution of cultivation techniques to the regional people.
Nurseries Market Festival opens to public daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Admission is free.
(6) Secretary-2 visits 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition, Eighth Mayor's Cup Horticultural Show
YANGON, 4 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo visited the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition at the Defence Services Museum and the Eighth Mayor's Cup Horticultural Show in commemoration of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day at Bahan Township Sports Ground No 8 this morning.
The Secretary-2 cordially met the visitors to the exhibition and had documentary photos taken there.
He went around the exhibition and viewed the booths of the ministries and entrepreneurs.
Then, the Secretary-2 and party went to the Horticultural Show where they were welcomed by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Holding the Show Member of Yangon City Development Committee, Joint Secretary of YCDC , Head of Department (Gardens and Sport Grounds) of YCDC and officials.
The Secretary-2 viewed shade trees, flowers, rare trees, crops, far machines, fertilisers and pesticides displayed by departments and private organisations.

(7) Over 15,700 attend 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Flag Ceremony at People's Square
YANGON, 4 Jan - The Year 20 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Yangon City Flag Ceremony held at the People's Square on Pyay Road this morning, was attended by over 15,700 people.
The ceremony was held in accord with the four national objectives laid down for the occasion For all the national people to collectively defence and safeguard the national independence and sovereignty for their perpetuation; For all the national people to be united to ensure non-disintegration of the Union and non-disintegration of national solidarity; For all the national people to strive for the emergence of an enduring Constitution, and for all the national people to implement the task to build a new modern and developed nation.
Members of Division, District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations, teachers, students, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, departmental personnel, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, workers and farmers assembled at their designated places at 5 am.
A total of 13,400 people of Yangon East, South, North and West districts entered the People's Square and took their designated places.
A total of 1,700 people of State and Division USDAs entered the People's Square through its No 2 Gate and took their designated places.
Also present on the occasion were members of USDA Central Executive Committee, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence and Yangon Command Headquarters, heads of departments, officials, members of Yangon City Development Committee, rectors and principals of universities and colleges, medical superintendents members of Organizing Work Committee for Observance of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day, divisional level officials, township education officers, secretaries and executives of Division, District and Township USDAs, delegates of 17 NGOs, national race couples of Fine Arts Department, local and foreign journalists, totalling 688.
At 4.20 am, the Year 2000 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Yangon City flag-hoisting ceremony was held. Then, the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day State flag saluting ceremony was held at 7 am. The Guard of Honour (Army, Navy and Air) Company marched from the Pyithu Hluttaw toward the People's Square and took place.
Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sub-committee for Organizing the Yangon City 52nd Anniversary independence Day Flag Hoisting and Saluting Ceremony Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than arrived there and took the salute of the Guard of Honour.
As Guard of Honour saluted the State Flag, the State Military Band played the national anthem.
The Guard of Honour then presented salute in memory of the Fallen Leaders and Comrades and recited the Four Oaths.
Afterwards, Chairman of the Sub-committee Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.
The Guard of Honour then presented salute to the Commander and left there.
(8) 5.3m stimulant tablets seized in Mongphyat
YANGON, 4 Jan - Over 5.3 million stimulant tablets were seized at a check point in Mongphyat, Shan State (East), on 23 December from a Nissan truck.
A combined team of members of Defence Services Intelligence regional unit and Myanmar Police Force searched the car, with license plate No Ka/4876, and found the drugs.
Action has been taken against Sai Aung (a) Tun Aung, 52, son of U Doe Bya, of 43, Sunmon Ward, Kengtung Township, who was the driver, and Aik Kyaing, 27, son of U Aik Kyaing, of Nounghon village, Mongyan Township, who was the passenger the car.
Investigation is under way to expose culprits related with the case.

(9) 34 Letpadan NLD members resign of their own accord
YANGON, 4 Jan - Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township Bago Division.
Thirty-four members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Letpadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 29 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
