(1)Secretary-1 inaugurates Home for the Aged in Nattalin Social Welfare Dept providing assistance for 30 Homes for Aged

YANGON, 12 Dec - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt; accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials, left here by car this morning and arrived at Nattalin of Bago Division at 9.50 am today.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander, military and civilian officers, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, social organizations and local people.

A ceremony to open Nattalin Home for the Aged was held at the venue on Yangon-Pyay Road in Nattalin at 10 am today, attended by Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the stone plaque of the home.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Commander, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Office, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Minister at the Prime Minister's Office planted the trees in the compound of the home to mark the opening of the home.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Buddha image at the Dhammayon. The Secretary-l then signed in the visitors' book.

Next, the Secretary-l and party visited the hostel for aged men.

At the hall of the home, the donation ceremony for Nattalin Home for the Aged was held.

On behalf of all well-wishers, U Yu Han presented the donations to the Secretary-1, the commander and Minister Brig-Gen Abel.

Then, well-wishers donated K 1.772 million for a trust-fund of the home including K 300,000 by National Health Committee, K 400,000 by Township Peace and Development Council,departments and War Village-tract Peace and Development Councils, K 200,000 by U Sein Chaw-Daw Mya Nwe of Yangon, K 100,000 each by U Kyaw Swe-Daw Khin Kyi of Nattalin, U Maung Maung Tin-Daw Khin Mar Aye of Nattalin, Dr U Kyi-Daw Khin Than of Konmyint Yeiktha, U Thein Gyaw-Daw Mar Mar Nwe of Yangon, U Khin Maung Oo-Daw Myint Myint Oo of Mandalay and U Myo Myint-Daw Aye Myint Cho of Nattalin.

Ministers Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.

The Secretary-l and party arrived at Nattalin Township Hospital where they were welcomed by officials and USDA members.

Then, the Secretary-l and party attended the ceremony of the first day of the Fifth Year National Immunization Days and gave oral polio vaccine to under-five children.
 
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Thakya Maha Myatmuni Pagoda and made the donation.

The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Visuta of Khemathiwun Monastery and Sayadaws at Sasana Beikmandaw in Nattalin and donated provisions to the Sayadaws.

In Gyobingauk Township, the Secretary-l attended the opening ceremony of multimedia teaching centre of Gyobingauk Basic Education High School.

Then, Secretary-l arrived at Yangon in the evening.


(2)Students urged to try heart and soul to become intellectuals and intelligentsia

YANGON, 12 Dec - A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of Basic Education High School in Gyobingauk, Bago Division, was held at the school this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the plaque commemorating the opening of the multimedia teaching centre.

Then the Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer application and E-mail room, the computer-aided instruction room, the electronic media (video system) room, the visual presenter room, the electronic- media (audio system) room, the photo and painting room, the domestic science room, the music and art room, the altar room and the visual presenter and printed media room.

Afterwards, the ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre was held in Shwenyila Hall of the school.

Headmistress of the purpose of opening the multimedia teaching centre, the sections of the centre and modern equipment installed at the centre.

Chairman of SBT U Win Myint Soe reported on concerted efforts of division, district and township authorities, well-wishers and parents for opening of the multimedia teaching centre at the basic education high school in Gyobingauk.

The Secretary- accepted K 1 million donated by Managing Director of MHLG Company Ltd U Myo Hein and Daw Khin Cho of the corrugated iron sheet and nail factory of Hlaingthaya Industrial Zone No 1 and  presented a certificate of  honour to the well-wishers.

In his address, the Secretary-l said the dynamic and active behaviour of students seen at the opening of the multimedia teaching centre of Basic Education High School in Gyobingauk signifies a good prospect for emergence of worthy sons and daughters who are of great value to the future of the nation.

It is found that the intellectual power and educational progress made by students seen today is on a par with that of students from other states and divisions including those from Yangon.

According to the education policy of Myanmar, efforts are being made to narrow the gap of education between rural and urban areas, and finally, it is aimed at removing the gap.

In the first phase of the education promotion programmes, students are nurtured with a view to acquiring well-rounded education.

In the second phase of the education promotion programmes, multimedia teaching centres aided with information technology and computers which are widely used in the world, are opened, and students are to be taught education of international standard.

In opening multimedia teaching centres all over the nation, the cooperation and participation of the parents and the people are of fundamental importance.

The success achieved in opening multimedia teaching centres at schools throughout the nation including BEHS in Gyobingauk with assistance of the members of the school boards of trustees and leadership of regional authorities, is far greater than expected.

After fulfilling the requirements for material development, efforts are being made under the leadership of the Government and with the cooperation of teachers for spiritual development of the students; in this regard, success has been achieved to some extent.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged students to try heart and soul to become intellectuals and intelligentsia who can contribute to emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Then, the Secretary-1 signed in the school record book.

The Secretary-l, together with members of the school board of trustees and the parent-teacher association, well-wishers, the headmistress, staff and students, had photos taken.


(3)Secretary-2 watches farm machinery demonstration 

YANGON, 12 Dec - A ceremony to demonstrate farm machinery manufactured by Briggs & Stratton Corporation, jointly organized by Tong Tah Co Ltd (Myanmar) and Briggs & Stratton Corporation, was held in the field of the modern agricultural project of No 11 Light Infantry Division on No 1 Highway in Mingaladon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint spoke of an increase in the use of farm machinery and the manufacturing and demonstration of farm machinery.

Asian Regional Director of Briggs & Stratton Corporation Mr Jim Crunkhorn explained matters related to machinery manufactured by the corporation.

Director-General of Agricultural Mechanization Department U Win Maw also spoke of farm machinery.

Then, the use of farm machinery was demonstrated.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Philrice Micromill, rice and wheat mills, tractors, generators, pesticide and water spraying equipment and paddy husk stoves.

The Secretary-2 made a speech.

Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials replied to the queries raised by the farmers.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke of the need to boost cultivation of pulses and beans and coordination work to enable farmers to purchase and use farm machinery.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained arrangements made by the ministry to purchase beans and pulses.


(4)Secretary-2 inspects poultry farm in Mingaladon
 
YANGON, 12 De:c-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Minister for Commerce, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, deputy ministers and senior Tatmadaw officers, inspected the poultry farm of Yangon City Development Committee at the junction of Htaukkyant in Mingaladon Township this morning.

Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win reported to the Secretary-2 and party on raising of about 10,000 poultry.

The Secretary-2 then left necessary instructions.


(5)Computers, printer, scanner donated to DSMHRI

YANGON, 12 Dec - Hailing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, under the arrangement of Hsu Lat Phyu Co Ltd, Daimex Inc (Japan) presented two computers, a printer and a scanner at Defence Services Museum and Historica1 Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore, Vice-Quartermaster-General, Camp Commandant of the Ministry of Defence.

First, Chairman Mr Shunichi Takenaga of Daimex Inc (Japan) explained the purpose of the donations.

Then, Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo accepted the donations and presented a certificate of honour to the well-wisher.


(6)First day of Fifth Year National Immunization Days launched

YANGON, 12 Dec - A ceremony to launch the first day of the Fifth Year National Immunization Days was held at the meeting hall of the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) this morning, attended by member of the National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

First, member of National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an address. He said:

Today is an auspicious day for Myanmar and its people, because we are launching the 5th Year National Immunization Days and it will again be a historic occasion.

The task is not an easy one, because we will be vaccinating 5.9 million children under five years for two rounds, the first round, today and the second round on 16 January 2000.

Implementing these activities for the fifth consecutive year will be a great challenge for all of us here. That is why the State Peace and Development Council has decided to give the highest political leadership and all necessary supports for conducting the Fifth NIDs.

Furthermore, the Basic Health Staff of the Ministry of Health will be responsible for all the immunization activities with the help and assistance of the community.

I would like to command voluntary work carried out by members of local NGOs such as Myanmar Maternal and  Child Welfare Association (NWA), Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), Myanmar Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade. These volunteers constitute the majority of personnel, needed for National Immunization Days nation-wide.

The NIDs in Myanmar are being implemented with assistance both technical and financial, from the UN Agencies, Rotary International, CDC (Atlanta), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Committee "Vaccine for World's Children", Government of the Republic of Korea and Premier Petroleum Myanmar Limited.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all these organizations on behalf of the Ministry of Health and the people of Myanmar.

Now Myanmar is also taking part in the global polio eradication initiative together with other nations of the world in the spirit of regional and global solidarity.

I would like to request all of you to sustain your efforts till "Poliomyelitis" is eradicated.

We will use all our concerted efforts to make Myanmar Polio free as well as to achieve "Target 2000 A world without polio".

Then, the ministers, the deputy minister and guests visited show rooms to mark the first day of the Fifth Year National Immunization Days.

Afterwards, the ministers and guests gave oral polio vaccines to children.


(7)Certificates of honour presented to well wishers of Fifth National Immunization Days

YANGON, 12 Dec - A ceremony to present certificates of honour to well-wishers who made contributions towards Fifth National Immunization Days, was held in the meeting hall of Department of Medical Research on Ziwaka Road this afternoon, addressed by member of the National Health Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-Gum and Chairperson of JVC Mrs Kayoko Hosokawa made speeches.

Two Japanese university girls, members of JVC, spoke of the purpose of the donation.

Chairman of Rotary International and Rotary Foundation Mr Richard D King, General Manager of Premier Petroleum Myanmar Ltd Mr Mervyn I Porter, Resident Representative of UNICEF Dr Juan Azuilar and Resident Representative of WHO Dr Agostino Borra also made speeches.

Then, the minister presented certificates of honour to officials of respective organizations.

Afterwards, the minister thanked the well-wishers.

In the evening, the minister hosted dinner in honour of the well-wishers at the Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel.

For the Fifth National Immunization Days, US $ 2 million were donated by UNICEF, US $ 0.59 million by JICA, US $ 0.506 million by CDC (Atlanta), US $ 0.45 million by JCV, US $ 0.182 million by Rotary International, US $ 0.182 million by WHO, US $ 0.05 million by the Government of the Republic of Korea and US $ 0.015 million by Premier Petroleum.


(8)Oral polio vaccines given to children in Yangon Division
 
YANGON, 12 Dec - According to the arrangement for the first day of the Fifth Year; National Immunization Days, the national polio vaccine supplying group, accompanied by Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Daw Yin Yin Myint, wife of the Minister for Health, Director-General Dr Paing Soe of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) officials of departments under the Ministry of Health, the donor youths association of Japan led by Mrs Osokawa, wife of the former Prime Minister of Japan and officials of General Administration Department and Union Solidarity and Development Association, arrived at Basic Education Primary School No 2 of Mingala Taungnyunt Township at 8.30 am today.

Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party gave oral polio vaccines to 110 children and presented gifts to them.

Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Daw Yin Yin Myint, wife of the Minister for Health, Mrs Osokawa, wife of the former Prime Minister of Japan and well-wishers of JCV group gave OPV to 180 children and presented gifts to them.

The group also gave OPV to 126 children at the hall of Education College in Yankin Township.


(9)Myanmar gets 31 gold, 1 silver in 1st SEA Canoe Championships, 1999

YANGON, 12 Dec - The 1st South East Asian Canoe Championships, 1999, continued for the third day and final day at Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, Inya Lake, this morning.

Myanmar canoe team won 31 gold medals and one silver medal after competing the championship.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and members, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, President of MRCF and executives, Secretary-General of International Canoe Federation Mr Otto Bonn and officials, managers, coaches and athletes of the teams and spectators.

In women's 200-metre quadruple kayak event, Khin Mar Oo, Naw Hsay Lar, Than Than Oo and Yin Yin Su of Myanmar won the first prize, Malaysia second and Thailand third.

In men's 200mebre single kayak event, Khin Maung Myint of Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia second and Singapore third.

In men's 200 metre single canoe event, Zaw Win Aung of Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia second and Thailand third.

In men's 200 metre single touring kayak event, Aung Naing Tun of Myanmar won the first prize, Malaysia second and Vietnam third.

In women's 200-metre single kayak event, Punghet Trawomsn of Thailand won the first prize, Khin Mar Oo of Myanmar second and the Philippines third.

In men's 200 metre double canoe event, Aung Linn and Mya San of Myanmar won the first prize, the Philippines second and Thailand third.

In women's 200 metre single touring kayak event, Naw Har Lar of Myanmar won the first prize, Singapore second and Vietnam third.

In men's 200 metre double kayak event, Khin Maung Myint and Phone Myint Teza of Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia second and Singapore third.

In women's 200-metre double kayak event, Naw Hsay Lar and Than That Oo of Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand second and Malaysia third.

In men's 200 metre double touring kayak event, Aung Kyaw Moe and Than Tun of Myanmar won the first prize, Malaysia second and Singapore third.

In women's 200 metre double touring kayak event, Khin Mar Thin and Nilar Win of Myanmar won the first prize, the Philippines second and Vietnam third.

In men's 200 metre quadruple kayak event, Khin Maung Myint, Kan Shwe, Phone Myint Teza and Than Tin of Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand second and Malaysia third.

(10)8 members resign from Bago Township NLD

YANGON, 12 Dec - Eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of Bago Township, Bago Division.

Eight members of Bago Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Bago Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(11)8 members resign from Mogok Township NLD

YANGON 12 Dec - Eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of Mogok Township, Mandalay Division.

Eight members of Mogok Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mogok Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 8 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
