(2)Secretary-1 attends ceremony to pay respects to aged poets, writers and journalists
YANGON, 11 Dec - Myanmar Sarsodaw Day was observed in conjunction with a ceremony to pay respects to aged literati at the City Hall here this morning.Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid respects and presented donations in cash and kind to the aged literati. that literati had taken the lead in striving for the interests of the nation and the people, holding their pen; they have inspired the people to be imbued with anti-colonial sentiment and a spirit of making supreme sacrifice for the nation and the people; they were in the vanguard in safeguarding the race and religion which got bogged down in the mire during the colonial period.
During the colonial period, Myanmarsar did not attain social acceptance; literati revived Myanmarsar to gain social standing; not only Master degree. but also doctorate in Myanmarsar are now given at the universities; at universities in London, Russia, Japan and China, Myanmarsar is being taught and Myanmarsar degree is being conferred.
Myanmar is a member of the-ASEAN; a writer from Myanmar has won South-East Asian Write Award every year since 1997; this shows that Myanmarsar is gaining popularity and spreading in the world.
Myanmarsar domain is expanding beyond the territory of Myanmar; the world has come to recognize Myanmar as well as national liberation and anti-colonial tradition of Myanmar.
The Secretary-1, ministers, deputy ministers, the chairman and CEC members of MWJA and literati paid respects to the aged literati.
Then, the Secretary-1, Minister for Information, ministers, deputy ministers and the vice-mayor presented K 45,000 each and gifts to the aged literati.
On behalf of the aged literati, U Tin Maung (Tekkatho Htin Gyi) spoke words of advice.
After the ceremony, the Secretary- 1 had a cordial meeting with the literati.
Last year, eight associations and 103 well-wishers donated over K 4.426 million; K 34,500 each and gifts were presented to 95 aged literati.
This year, six associations and 246 wel1-wishers donated over K 6.027 million and gifts; K 45,000 each and gifts were presented to 108 aged literati.
(3)Basic Education High School No 2 in Kyimyindine gets multimedia teaching centres
YANGON, 11 Dec - Multimedia teaching centres of Basic Education High School No 2 in Kyimyindine Township were opened this morning.Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary -1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attend the ceremony to open the teaching centres and made a speech on the occasion.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, Deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor of Yangon, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of Division/District/Township Peace and Development Councils, the Director-General and officials of No 3 Basic Education Department, well-wishers, township education officers, principal, members of School Board of Trustees and Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw Than Shin and teachers and students. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of multimedia teaching centres of the school. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and officials inspected educational broadcasting section, listening and reading section, computer section, demonstrative mediasection, art room (music), prayer hall, science laboratory, domestic science room, painting and literature room.Headmistress explained installation and building of multimedia teaching centres with the aim of. upgrading learning of students and enabling them to skillfully handle and operate computer and modern equipment, sector-wise formation of the teaching centres, and the modern teaching aids. Chairman of SBT Capt Sein Aung (Rtd) explained endeavours for emergence of the teaching centres under the leadership of SBT, with the coordination of the headmistress and teachers, and with the cooperation of well-wishers and and pledged that SBT will continue to make efforts for development of the school in collaboration with teachers, parents and students. The Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations and then signed in the visitors’ book. Making a speech on the occasion, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said those multimedia teaching centres emerged due to the cooperative efforts of members of SBT, teachers and students.
Implementation of the education promotion programmes is making progress due to cooperation of the parents and members of SBT, he noted.
The Secretary-1 also spoke of the need to achieve physical and spiritual development of students to be able to catch up with the changing and developing world as Information Technology is internationally used on an extensive scale today.
Opening multimedia teaching centres through cooperative efforts of the State and SBT members is to fulfil requirements of infrastructure, and he was pleased to see students showing their skills with the use of modern learning aids, he said: The Secretary-1 expressed thanks to members of School Board of Trustees for their cooperation in implementation of the education promotion programmes under the leadership of the Government.
In conclusion, he urged teachers to strive to nurture students so that they will become good sons and daughters of the State.
Later, the Secretary-1, together with the members of SBT and PTA, the headmistress and teachers and students, had photos taken.
(4)Trust fund set up for poor and needy patients of Yangon East Hospital
YANGON, 11 Dec - A ceremony to set up a trust fund for poor and needy patients receiving medical treatment at Yangon East Hospital was held in the meeting hall of the hospital in Botahtaung Township this afternoon.Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt handed over K 1 million donated by the National Health Committee and accepted donations of well-wishers.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, the vice-mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads, directors-general and officials of departments under the Ministry of Health, medical superintendents and well-wishers.
In his speech, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said in accord with the guidance of the chairman of the National Health Committee, out of 327 hospitals in states and divisions, there are trust funds amounting to K 90.5 million in 56 hospitals.
With the use of trust funds, medicine will be provided for poor and needy patients who are receiving treatment at hospitals.
In the health sector, cost-sharing health system has been used for the patients who can afford.
In giving treatment to poor and needy patients, the trust funds will be used to buy expensive and efficacious medicines for them. Altogether 38 well-wishers set up a trust fund amounting to over K 7.7 million for poor and needy patients: who are receiving medical treatment at Yangon East Hospital.
Then, the Secretary-1 handed over K 1 million donated by the National Health Committee to Minister.
The Secretary-l, ministers and the vice-mayor accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour.
On behalf of the well-wishers, U Kyee Myint of Soe Soe Fong Company Ltd explained the purpose of donations.
Medical Superintendent of Yangon East Hospital Dr Kyi Thein thanked the well-wishers.
(5)Secretary-1 inspects newly built Traditional Medicine Hospital (Yangon)
YANGON, 11 Dec - Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Health, Vice-Mayor of Yangon, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command, and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Traditional Medicine Hospital (Yangon) on Ngahtatgyi Pagoda Road in Bahan Township this afternoon.They were welcomed there by heads of department and officials. The Secretary-l inspected the newly built 50-bed traditional medicine hospital there.
Minister for Health and Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Professor reported on preparations for the ceremony to open 50-bed Traditional Medicine Hospital (Yangon), Managing Director of Myanma Industrial Construction Services on arrangements for renovation of the old hospital.
The Secretary- 1 gave necessary instructions and inspected the herbal
plantation there.
(6)Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donate rice to monasteries
YANGON, 1 1 Dec - Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated rice to Mohnyin Theingi, Mingalarama and Maha Gandhayon Pariyatti monasteries of Dagon Myothit (North) Township, at Pyigyichantha Maha Pagoda in the township this morning.Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen.Tin Oo, Minister for Religious Affairs, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Deputy Minister for Labour , senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, well-wishers and guests.
The congregation received the Five Precepts from Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Parnaukkha of Mingalarama Pariyatti Monastery.
The Secretary-2 and party presented provisions to members of the Sangha. Then, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore, Vice-Adjutant-General and General Staff Officer (Grade-1) (Air) offered rice donated by families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Mingalarama Pariyatti Monastery.
Afterwards, Yangon City Development Committee, Yangon Division, Yangon East District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel and well-wishers donated 86 bags of rice, 30 viss of edible oil, 250 viss o f iodized salt, one bag of gram, 2,860 bottles of indigenous medicines and robes to members of the Sangha.Next, well-wishers presented K 300,000 towards the funds of the monasteries to Minister for Religious Affairs, deputy ministers and officials.
Director of People’s Militia and Frontier Forces of the Ministry, of Defence and Director-General of Religious Affairs Department supplicated on the purpose,of the donations and religious affairs. Then members of the Sangha recited Parittas. Presiding Nayaka of Mohnyin Theingi Monastery Sayadaw , Bhaddanta Jeyapandita delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.
(7)AWB opens new branch in Dagon Myothit (South) Township
YANGON, 11 Dec - Asia Wealth Bank Ltd opened its Dagon Myothit (South) Branch this morning.The ceremony to open the bank branch at the town hall of Dagon Myothit (South) Township was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Commerce, Minister for Finance and Revenue and Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology, Deputy Minister for Labour, senior military officers, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar, departmental officials, officials of private banks, Chairman of AWB, Vice-Chairman and officials and guests.
Minister for Finance and Revenue made a speech on the occasion, saying AWB had opened 34 branches including the present one, and AWB is a bank rendering financial services to the people with modern banking system.
Extending bank branches in new towns will ensure smooth running of financial matters of entrepreneurs in the regions concede, he said and urged private banks to provide cash assistance for agricultural works being given encouragement by the State and to strive for success in realising,the objectives of Myanmar Banks Association.Minister for Finance and Revenue, formally opened the bank branch.

(8)Myanmar canoe team wins all 12 gold medals
YANGON, 11 Dec - The 1st South-East Asian Canoe Championship, 1999, continued for the second day at Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, Inya Lake, this afternoon.
Among the spectators were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and members, Secretary-General of International Canoe Federation Mr Otto Bonn and officials, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department, presidents of various sports federations, President of Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation and officials, managers, coaches and athletes of the teams.
In the second-day matches, Phone Myint Teza of Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia the second prize and Thailand the third prize in men’s 500-metre single kayak event.
In women’s 500-metre quadruple kayak event, Khin Mar Oo, Naw Hsay Lar, Than Than Oo and Yin Yin Su of Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the second prize and Singapore the third prize.
In men’s 500-metre single canoe event, Zaw Win Aung of Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the second prize and Vietnam the third prize.
In men’s 500-metre single kayak event, Than Tun of Myanmar won the first prize, Malaysia the second prize and Vietnam the third prize.
In women’s 500-metre single kayak event, Khin Mar Oo of Myanmar won the first prize prize, the Philippines the second prize and Thailand the third prize.

After the matches, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials presented prizes to the winners.

(9)18 members resign from Singaing Township NLD
YANGON, 11 Dec - Eighteen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Singaing Township, Mandalay Division.
Eighteen members of Singaing Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Singaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 1 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
