(1) Secretary-l meets US SenatorYANGON, 7 Dec - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met Senator Mr John F Kerry and party of the United States, currently here, who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9 am today.
Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister and Director-General of the Protocol Department.
The senator and party were accompanied by Charge d' Affaires ai of the US Embassy Ms Priscilla A Clapp.
(2) Donations towards funds to install lithotripters
YANGON, 7 Dec - Well-wishers presented donations towards funds to install lithotripter which is valued at US $ 90,000 at Yangon General Hospital this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the government is rendering assistance as much as possible in fulfilling the requirements of the Ministry of Health' s tasks in ensuring health and longevity for the people.
Lithotripter is one among the advanced medical equipment the government is installing at hospitals. The lithotripter can cure kidney patients without surgical operation.
He said a lithotripter was installed at the New Yangon General Hospital and plans are in progress to install another one at Mandalay People's Hospital, thanking the donors.
Minister for Cooperatives explained the functions of the machine and donated K 50,000 for the machine.
Minister for Health explained the objectives of the Ministry of Health and efforts in implementing them.
Urosurgeon reported on the curing of kidney disorder with the machine.
Then well-wishers presented donations towards funds to install the machines.
Donations were K 1 million each by Golden Flower Company, Asia World Company Limited, Super One Company Limited, SI Company Limited, Yuzana Company Limited, Olympic Company Limited, Myanmar Billion Group Company Limited, Myanmar Golden Star Company Limited, Ayeya Shwewa Company, Shwe Thanlwin Company, Dagon International Company Limited, Shwe Thazin Company, Shwe Mithasu Company, Wa Wa Win Company Limited, Golden Green Company Limited, Sea Boy Company Limited, Shwe Nagawin Company Limited, Steel Stone Company Limited, Myan Naing Myint Company Limited, Win Maw Company Limited, Khitshesaung Company Limited, Thein Shwe and Family Company Limited, Pokaung Company Limited, First Top Company Limited, CES Company, Myanmar Mayflower Company Limited, Sakura Company, Woodland Company, Aung Aung Enterprise and Aung Zin Mar Company and K 500,000 each by Max Myanmar Company and Fisca Company.
Minister for Health accepted the donations.
Afterwards, families of the Ministry of Health presented K 1.5 million to install a lithotripter at Mandalay People's Hospital, Minister and family K 50,000, Dr Than Aye and family K 50,000, Daw Tin Tin Hlaing of Eagle Company K 1 million, Daw Irine Tin Hla K 100,000, U Kyaw Pe and Daw Hla Win of Hsinhnitkaung Family K 1 million, Dr Toe Lwin K 20,000 and U Thein Tun of Myanmar Golden Star K 500,000.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister of Health and Deputy Minister for Health accepted the donations.
U Shwe of Shwe Mithasu Company, on behalf of donors, explained the purpose of making the donations.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue, Vice-Adjutant-General, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general of the Ministry of Health, officials, donors and guests.
(3) Third Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic Conference ends
YANGON, 7 Dec - The Third Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic Conference continued for the second day at the International Business Centre, on Pyay Road, here, this morning.
It was attended by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development, Chairman of Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic Committee Mr T Torium, Japanese Ambassador Mr Kazuo Asakai, officials of departments concerned, the President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and EC members and guests.
Participants took part in the discussions.
The conference ended with the concluding remarks by Minister Brig-Gen Abel and M.r T Torium.
(4) Construction of earthquake-resistant buildings stressed
YANGON, 7 Dec - Meteorology and Hydrology Department of the Ministry of Transport held a seminar on seismology this morning at the department, addressed by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the meeting is important in saving property and lives due to earthquakes: Myanmar R situated on the Alpide Seismic Belt; and as earthquakes with strong intensity can occur in the nation, the government is taking necessary and advanced measures for the safety of lives and property.
The respective departments are taking into account the seismic data in constructing buildings to reduce the risk of earthquakes Public Works, Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development and Yangon City Development Committee should consider the seismic data in constructing earthquake-resistant buildings. Resource persons should make efforts for the reduction of the earthquake risks in Myanmar based on their experiences.The chairman of World Seismic Safety Initiative (WSSI) and the Chief Executive Officer of Oya Corporation also gave speeches .
Occasion were Deputy Ministers for Transport and officials of World Seismic Safety Initiative, directors-general and man aging directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Transport, principals, advisers, high-level officials of other ministries and officials of Meteorology and Hydrology Department.
Then, the first day session of the seminar began.
It will continue tomorrow.
(5) Seminar on Patient Centred Nursing Care Model begins
YANGON, 7 Dec - The seminar on Patient Centred Nursing Care Model, jointly sponsored by the Myanmar Nurses Association (Central) and World Health Organization (WHO) began at Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road, here this morning.
Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an address on the occasion.
The minister said nurses should uphold their fine tradition; and the Ministry of Health is realizing its health policy and objectives by applying three methods. Nurses are the persons who are in touch with the public most in effectively disseminating health education and rendering health care services down to the people in villages, upholding the objective-longevity and health for everyone. Thus, endeavours to upgrade the ability and work efficiency of the nurses have become an importance task. As a means to give priority to the tasks, Patient Centred Nursing Care Model Projects are being launched at North Okkalapa Township People's Hospital and Kayin State People's Hospital in Hpa-an Township; and plans are under way to extend the project in Mandalay soon. Nurses who are skilled in handling and using advanced hospital and medical equipment are required; and the directors-general of the respective departments, heads of the Health Department Offices in States and Divisions, medical superintendents and physicians should render assistance in uplifting the skills and work efficiency of nurses.
Resident Representative of WHO Dr A Borra also gave a speech.
Chairperson of Myanmar Nurses Association briefed the meeting on presenting proposals for launching the project.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health, Director of Medical Services of the Defence Services, senior military officers, directors-general of the respective departments under the Ministry of Health, deputy directors-general, directors, medical superintendents, matrons, nurses, executives of Myanmar Nurses Association (Central), officials of WHO and guests.
Afterwards, the meeting started. It was chaired by Deputy Minister for Health.
International Consultant Ms Ryanda Mee put forward discussions on the situation of the Model and Director (Nursing) on plans to effectively upgrade nursing services.
Participants presented matters relating to the vitality of launching the Patient Centred Nursing Care Model ir other hospitals.
(6) Seminar on Bank Management into New Millennium held
YANGON, 7 Dec - Seminar on Bank Management into New Millennium co-organised by the Central Bank of Myanmar and Deutsche Bank of Germany was held at CBM this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Home Affairs, Governor of CBM, Ambassador of Israel Mr Gad Nathan, heads of department under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, and officials of Deutsche Bank and state owned and private banks.
Making an opening speech on the occasion, Minister U Khin Maung Thein said banking methods to be experienced in the new year which will fall in a few weeks would be discussed at that seminar.
In endeavouring for economic development of the nation, the State's banking system will be reformed as required in accordance with the changing and developing international banking, he said.
At a time when efforts are being made for recovery of economic undertakings in Asia after the economic crisis, special attention is to be paid to banking systems, he said and urged the participants to apply experience and knowledge gained from the seminar in development of the financial business in future.Mr Lawrence Ho, on behalf of Mr A Hoffmann of Deutsche Bank, expressed words of thanks.
(7) Minister meets Country General Manager of Keppel Land International Ltd
YANGON, 7 Dec - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Country General Manager of Keppel Land International Ltd of Singapore Mr Detlef Meisslein and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.
Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.
(8) More canoeing teams arrive
YANGON, 7 Dec - Chairman of Racing Committee of the 1st South-East Asian Canoe Championship Mr John Leukemans of International Canoe Federation who will conduct the International Canoe Referee Examination arrived here by air this morning.
Similarly, the Malaysian canoeing team comprising eight men and six women led by Mr Jamalulil Juffery and the Singaporean canoeing team comprising six men and four women led by Ms Brene Chia Ai Ling arrived here by air in the afternoon to take part in the 1 st South-East Asian Canoe Championship, 1999, on Inya Lake, Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, from 9 to 12 December.
The canoe teams were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by General Secretary Professor of Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation and j International Relations Officer of Sports and Physical Education Department.
In the evening, the canoe teams of Lao PDR, Brunei and the Philippines arrived here by air.
(9) Bangladesh study delegation visits Kanbawzathadi Palace in Bago
YANGON, 7 Dec - The study delegation led by Maj-Gen A.M Mansur Ahmed of Defence Services Command and Staff College, accompanied by Deputy Director of Military Training Col Than Myint, visited Kanbawza-thadi Palace in Bago this morning.
The delegation also visited Shwemawdaw Pagoda and Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha Image.
They later visited Tatmadaw Shoe Factory (Indaing).
(10) 32 members resign from Minhla Township NLD
YANGON, 7 Dec - Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Minhla Township, Bago Division.
Thirty-two members of Minhla Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Minhla Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
