Also present on the occasion were ministers, Yangon Mayor, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, members of the Governing Council of CIRDAP, leaders and the members of the delegations to the meeting of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, officials of the Governing Council of CIRDAP, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, ambassadors of foreign missions in Myanmar, resident representatives of UN
agencies in Myanmar, other officials and guests.Director-General Dr AVS Reddy presented gifts to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Minister Mr Sunder Lal Patwa who is soon to complete his term as the Chairman.
The ceremony ended after the Secretary-l had photo taken together with the guests.
The Secretary-l and guests then visited the exhibition commemorating the opening of the 12th Governing Council Meeting of CIRDAP.
(2)International Day of Disabled Persons observed
YANGON, 3 Dec - The International Day of Disabled Persons was observed at International Business Centre this afternoon, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement said this is an occasion showing the noble mind and deeds such as the willingness to help others, sympathy and kindness of Myanmar society in accord with the nation's tradition of actively taking part in the UN Activities as a member country.
Observing the Day which falls on 3 December is to uplift the dignity and morale of the disabled of the world in line with the definitions and objectives of the UN.
The 48th UN General Assembly has designated 3 December the International Day of Disabled Persons for their equal participation in community and social integration of the attributes and the attitude of the disabled who are also human beings of society.
Beginning 1994, Myanmar observes.the International Day of Disabled Persons annually on a grand-scale, selecting a motto for the Day every year and holding skill contests such as singing, dancing, tailoring, painting and wicker-work for the disabled.
The motto for this year is "We are disabled but we can show that we are able".
The nation is intensifying its rehabilitation programmes in enabling the disabled to take part in unity with the entire national people in the march to a peaceful, pleasant, modern and developed nation.
As the Social Welfare Department is implementing rehabilitation programmes so also the Health Department is opening rehabilitation centres and launching projects to wipe out polio and goitre.
Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation is also nurturing many outstanding athletes who bring honour to the nation. The Ministry of Education is conducting special education programmes for the disabled in helping them to get access to the institutions of higher learning.
The disabled never lost their potential, and they still have the ability to serve their families and the community. The formation of the National Committee for Disabled Persons had already been drafted. The Ministry of SWRR is taking up duty as the focal point in developing the lives of the disabled.
UN Resident Coordinator Mr Partrice Cocur Bizot also gave a speech.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, rectors, resident representatives of UN agencies, internal and external social organizations, officials and guests.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, member of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and officials presented prizes to the disabled for their outstanding performance in various fields.

YANGON, 3 Dec - Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected renovation of Myoma Sports Ground in Dagon Township and Resistance Park where the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day ceremony will be held, this morning.
Accompanied by Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of 55th Anniversary Arm Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command, Chief of Staff (Air), Chief of Armed Forces Training, Vice-Adjutant-General, Vice-Quartermaster- General, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Deputy Adjutant-General, Deputy Director of Military Engineers, member of Yangon City Development Committee and officials, Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected renovation of Myoma Sport Ground at 7.15 am.
Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party then inspected renovation of the Resistance Park.
Later, Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected military parade training at the park and gave necessary instructions to officials.
(4)Prizes presented to winners of Defence Services C-in-C's Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Judo/Gymnastics Tournament
YANGON 3 Dec - The prize presentation for Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Shield Tatmadaw (Army Navy and Air) Judo/Gymnastics Tournament was held at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this evening.
Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
Commander of Yangon Command, Minister for Sports, Vice-Adjutant-General, military region commanders, station commanders and commanding officers of regiments and units under the control of Yangon Command, senior military officers, Tatmadaw members and families, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross Brigade, guests and spectators.Senior military officers presented prizes to respective teams and individual winners.

(5)Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association observes World AIDS Day
YANGON, 3 Dec - World AIDS Day was observed with the sponsorship of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the multi-purpose building of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning, with an address by Chairman of National AIDS Control Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.
On the occasion, the minister said the HIV/AIDS control task is being undertaken by the Ministry of Health with national awareness; in this regard, all the ministries, internal and international NGOs, UN agencies and the public are to cooperate in preventing that problem; therefore, the Ministry of Health formed National AIDS Control Committee and has been drawing and implementing plans; as a result of concerted efforts, the public and the youths can be informed of health education related to AIDS; success has been achieved to some extent in carrying out tasks such as taking preventive measures against AIDS, prevention of spread of the disease, taking care of disease-contracted
persons with loving-kindness, compassion and goodwill and consulting work.Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, regarding the efforts for control of AIDS as a national task, is participating in this task; according to the set-up there are over 5,000 associations at various - levels under MMCWA; plans for control of AIDS have been laid down and implemented effectively.
It is found that Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association observes World AIDS Day on 1 December every year.
In conclusion, the minister said it is heartening to see that MMCWA is taking part in the efforts for control of HIV/AIDS.
Afterwards, the minister and the guests viewed the exhibition on prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. Then, the ceremony recessed, and resumed at 11.00 am.
Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a speech.
Deputy Director of Central Health Education Division of Health Planning Department gave a talk on the role of women in preventing HIV and AIDS.

YANGON, 3 Dec - Minister for Culture U Win Sein met Dr Eva Stangl-Theimer of University Hospital for Neurology from Austria at his office this afternoon.

(8)218 members resign from Palaw Township NLD
YANGON, 3 Dec - Two-hundred and eighteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy in Palaw Township, Taninthayi Division.
Two-hundred and eighteen members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthayi Division. of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 August 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in the party politics of NLD.
