(1)Special Refresher Course No 38 for Basic Education Teachers

YANGON, 8 Nov - A ceremony to open the Special Refresher Course No 38 for  Basic Education Teachers was held at Nawarat Hall of Central Institute of  Civil Service in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, this morning, attended by  Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

First, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace  and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an opening address. In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged the trainees to pay attention to  successful implementation of the education promotion programmes for  development of human resources which are vital for emergence of a peaceful,  stable, modern and developed nation; perpetual promotion and propagation of  the spirit of national solidarity and the Union spirit which are the true  forces in warding off the hegemonies of neo-colonialists who want to  interfere in and manipulate the affairs of international community; enabling  the people to oppose and crush the danger of destructive elements who are  launching instigations by accepting foreign assistance to overwhelm the  youths with anarchism, terrorism and negative views; and nurturing and  guiding their pupils as their own offspring to be free from deceits of  axe-handles who are acting under the strains of aliens.

After the opening ceremony, the Secretary-l cordially met with trainee  teachers.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party had lunch together with trainee teachers at  the mess.

Altogether 1,507 trainee teachers are attending the four-week course.


(2) Works coordinated for holding of South East Asian Canoe Championships

YANGON, 8 Nov - A coordination meeting for holding of the First South East  Asian Canoe Championships 1999 was held at the National Indoor Stadium-l this  afternoon, with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-l said there are good prospects for Myanmar in canoe  competition and by hosting the competition Myanmar athletes will gain  experience and technique.

He said international athletes and guests would realize the objective  condition of stability and peace in Myanmar and the competition would help  nation's tourism industry.

He called for cooperation for success of the competition.

Next, Chairman of Leading Committee Minister for Sports reported on formation  of the committee and Sub-committees for holding of the First South East Asian  Canoe Championships 1999, the agenda and accommodations for the athletes and  observers.

President of Myanmar Rowing Federation reported on events and Myanmar  athletes' training for the competition and Secretary of MRF Dr Than Toe on  programme for supervision by officials of World Canoe Federation and  preparations.

Officials of various Sub-committees reported on arrangements for success of  the competition.

The Secretary-1 took part in the discussions.


(3) Secretary-1 and Secretary-2 attend second friendly volleyball   match between Myanmar and PRC

YANGON, 8 Nov - The second friendly volleyball match of Myanmar Tatmadaw  Volleyball Team and the Volleyball Team of Chendu Military Region of People's  Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China was played at National  Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna at 4 pm today, attended by Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Secretary-2 Lt-Gen  Tin Oo.


(4) Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts    Competition continues

YANGON, 8 Nov - The Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts  Competition continued for the 14th day at the designated venues today.

Present on the occasion were Patron of the Seventh Myanmar Traditional  Cultural Performing Arts Competition Secretary-l of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chairman of  Organizing Leading Committee for Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural  Performing Arts Competition member of the State Peace and Development Council  Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, members of Panel of Patrons of the  Performing Arts Competition Minister for Culture, Minister for Foreign  Affairs, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore, Chief of Staff (Air), Vice-Chairman  of Organizing Leading Committee Deputy Minister for Culture, senior military  officers, departmental officials, Chairman of the Work Committee Commander of  No 3 Military Region, officials, people and tourists.


(5) Deputy Prime Minister receives visitors from Australia

YANGON, 8 Nov - Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment  Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of Sydney  Team (Hawkham) Corporation Co Ltd of Australia Mr Kim Boulom who called at  his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman's Office Secretary of MIC and officials.


(6) Seminar on the AFTA Process begins

YANGON, 8 Nov - The seminar on the AFTA Process jointly sponsored by Myanmar  Institute of Strategic and International Studies and Sasakawa Peace  Foundation and in cooperation with the National AFTA Unit was held at the  Hotel Equatorial this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Finance and  Revenue, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassadors of ASEAN nations  and embassy staff, the Japanese Ambassador, senior military officers of the  Ministry of Defence, departmental officials, scholars from the universities,  officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and  Industry, Myanmar Industrial Producers Association, Myanmar Rice Wholesale  Merchants Association, Myanmar Rice Millers' Association, Myanmar Beans and  Pulses and Sesamun Merchants Association, Myanmar Edible Oil Merchants and  Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Fisheries Federation, Myanmar Timber  Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Computer Industry Association, Myanmar  Women Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Bankers Association and Myanmar  Printers and Publishers Association and private businessmen.

Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office  Brig-Gen Abel delivered a speech.

Finally, may I express my deep appreciation to the foreign and local resource  persons for their time and enthusiasm, to the co-sponsors the Sasakawa Peace  Foundation and Myanmar-ISIS, National AFTA Unit, for their kind contributions  to organizing this seminar.

In the first day session, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,  National AFTA Unit and Investment and Companies Administration Department  took part in discussions on ASEAN economic cooperation major agreements  signed by Myanmar, tasks being undertaken by Myanmar and tasks to be  undertaken.

The second day session will continue tomorrow.


(7) More telephone lines installed in Mayangon auto exchange

YANGON, 8 Nov - More telephone lines were installed for international auto  exchange and local trunk call auto exchange in Mayangon auto exchange of  Myanma Posts and Telecommunications on 7 November. A computer software that  controls the function of the exchange was repaired in order to solve the Y2K  problem.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin and  General Manager of MPT supervised the work.

Due to the extension of more telephone lines external and internal  communications will be smoother and better on completion of Yangon-Mandalay  digital microwave link and Asia-Europe underwater cable communications work.


(8) Engineering Management Course No 1 ends

YANGON, 8 Nov - The Engineering Management Course No 1 of the Ministry of  Electric Power concluded at the meeting hall of Myanmar Electric Power  Enterprise, this morning, at tended by Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen  Tin Htut, Director-General of Electric Power Department, heads of MEPE,  officials and trainees.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut expressed belief that the  trainees have thoroughly learnt the lectures given at the course, adding it  was needed to have ability to use the lectures in practical field and urged  the trainees to strive their almost in the field.

He spoke of the need to pay serious attention to the objectives of the State  and strive to become good service personnel who the public rely on.

Then, the Minister presented prizes to outstanding trainees, and certificates  and funds to be used in practical field to trainees.


(9) Minister receives official of Showa Technosystems Inc of Japan

YANGON 8 Nov - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Executive  Vice-President of Showa Technosystems Inc of Japan Mr Tomoharu Akabane who,  called at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Health and officials.


(10) Construction works in Insein, Ahlon inspected

YANGON, 8 Nov - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by  Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries and officials, inspected  progress in construction of Aungzeya Bridge across Hline River and use of  cement in Insein Township this morning.

The minister heard reports of officials of Public Works and inspected storage  of cement and the construction site.

Then, the minister and party went to Cement Distribution Depot of MCI in  Phawgan, Insein, and inspected the tasks of the depot.

They proceeded to the office of Myanmar Industrial Port Co Ltd jointly  established by MCI and Cho Ye Co Ltd in Ahlon.

Director of MIC and Managing Director of Cho-Ye Co reported on progress in  construction of the wharf being jointly built by MCI and Cho Ye Co Ltd. The  wharf is located in the compound of Ahlon As-bestos Cement Plant.


(11) Ephedrine powder seized in Chanmyathazi

YANGON, 8 Nov - Members of Local Intelligence Unit, acting on information,  searched the house of May Hlyanyon, 35, son of U May Shaw Hwe, Kantha Ward in  Chanmyathazi, on 29 October and arrested him together with 300 kilos of  Ephedrine powder hidden in ten gunny bags.

Upon further investigation, the members arrested Than Aung (a) Ahti, 29, son  of U Law Sisaw, Kandaw Ward in Chanayethazan, owner of the drug, and Yan  Shwin Pi (a) Kyaw Aye, 21, son of U Yan Moe Yan, Region 17, Ward 5, Lashio,  and Ahshi, 22, son of U Kaw Konphu, Ward 4, Hsenwi, with a Van car (3  Ka/7357), one pistol, one magazine and 22 rounds of ammunition. Action is  being taken against the four according to law.


(12) 32 members resign from Kawthoung Township NLD

YANGON, 8 Nov - Thirty-two members resigned from National League for  Democracy of Kawthoung Township, Taninthayi Division.

Thirty-two members of Kawthoung Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their  own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kawthoung  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party  concerned on 12 August 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.


(13)  53 members resign from Palaw Township NLD

YANGON, 8 Nov - Likewise, fifty-three members resigned from National League  for Democracy of Palaw Township, Taninthayi Division.

Fifty-three members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own  volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Palaw Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned  on 7 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of  NLD.
