(4) Toshiba 400 MA X-ray-mounted Hino Bus for Defence Services Medical Unit

YANGON, 29 Oct - A ceremony to present Toshiba 400 MA X-ray-mounted Hino Bus and disposable syringes donated for Defence Services Medical Unit was held at the Office of Tatmadaw Medical Research and Development Committee at No 2 Military Hospital this morning.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo extended greetings.

Dr U Mya Thaung (Defence Services Institute of Medicine) explained the purpose of the donation.

With the patronage of Parents Patron of A&O Co Ltd Professor Dr U Mya Thaung and wife Daw Khin Thin Yi, Managing Director of A&O Co Ltd Dr Khin Maung Phyu and wife Daw Mon Mon Mya and family and President of Aurora Corporation in Japan U Aung Kyaw Mya and wife Daw Cho Hla Myint and family presented Toshiba 400 MA X-ray-mounted Hino Bus worth K 15 million to Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han.

On behalf of well-wisher U Zaw Tun Oo-Daw Khin Thida and son Maung Thant Thi Han Zaw, a representative presented K 100,000 to Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han.

Then, on behalf of wellwisher Medical Superintendent of Sekiguchi Internal Medicine Department Clinic Dr Takashi Sekiguchi, Mr Yutaka Odawara explained the donation and presented disposable syringes worth US $ 3,000 to Director Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han.

Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han presented certificates of honour to the donors.

(5) Commander-in-Chief (Air) receives Air Attache of American Embassy

YANGON, 29 Oct Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than received Air Attache of American Embassy in Myanmar Lt-Col Probyn Thompson III who had completed his tour of duty and his successor Lt-Col Carl D Livermore at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon.

(6) Well-wishers donate over K 2.2 million for Thanmyanthu welfare activities

YANGON, 29 Oct-Wellwishers made donations for welfare activities of Thanmyanthu Enterprise today.   The donation ceremony was held at Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony and accepted the donations.

On behalf of the wellwishers, proprietor of Thamada Thingantaik Thiha Thudhamma Manijotadhara U Than Naing explained the purpose of donation.

Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun thanked the wellwishers.

(7) Heroin seized at Yangon International Airport

YANGON, 29 Oct Heroin weighing 5.05 kilos was seized from two passengers bound for Bangkok by Thai Airways TG-306 flight at Yangon International Airport yesterday evening.

Members of the Defence Services Intelligence airport security force made a search on the two suspicious looking men from among the passengers bound for Bangkok by the plane at the Departure Lounge at 7 pm and found the heroin concealed on the body of one.

The authorities on security duty at the airport found the heroin packed in seven packets from Mr Ng Chiong Beng, 31, holding passport No S-6904899 D.

His accomplice Mr Soh Ban Chuan, 26, holding passport No S-7344892 A was also arrested in connection with the case. Action has been taken against the two traffickers in accord with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(8) 32 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 29 Oct-Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-two members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 9 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9) Minister inspects warehouses of Central Medical Stores Depot

YANGON, 29 Oct-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by directors-general of departments under the ministry, inspected Central Medical Stores Depot on Ziwaka Road this afternoon.

The minister and party inspected transit warehouses, medicines warehouses and medical equipment warehouses in-CMSD.

Deputy Director (Medicines and Medical Equipment) Dr Myint Thaung and officials conducted the minister and party round the warehouses.

The minister and party then inspected production of purified water, use of machines and production process.

Director-General Dr Kyi Soe of Health Planning Department and officials reported on process of the factory to the minister.

At the briefing hall, the minister heard reports on cost of construction for the factory and medicinal assistance by officials and attended to their needs.

Then, the minister inspected ambulances and other vehicles of the depot.

(10) Minister meets Ambassador of Germany

YANGON, 29 Oct-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Ambassador of Germany Dr Marius Haas who called at his office at 10 am today.

(11) Drug seizures in September

YANGON, 29 Oct-Members of the Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force and Customs Department seized 373 narcotic drug cases during September 1999.     The seizures included 28.3394 kilos of opium in 21 cases,33.9443 kilos of heroin in 102 cases, 1.8958 kilos of opium oil in six cases, 8.8022 kilos of marijuana in 82 cases, 19.12 litres of Phensedyl in five cases, 0.4649 kilo of low grade opium in 15 cases, 101,190 stimulant tablets in 43 cases, 280.118 kilos of ephedrine in six cases, 2.33 litres of comethyzine in two cases, 35.5 kilos of solid chemicals in one case, 45 kilos of ammonium chloride in one case,9.092 litres of other chemical liquid in one case, 46 cases in failure to register and 42 other drug cases.

Action has been taken against 497 traffickers-404 men and 93 women-during the period.

(12) Ramayana drama competition continues for fourth day

YANGON, 29 Oct -The Ramayana drama competition of Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 pm fourth day today.

The Ramayana drama troupe of Mandalay Division took part in the competition.

(13) Chairman of Leading Committee meets members of Central Panel of Judges of Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition

YANGON, 29 Oct-Chairman of the Leading Committee for Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than met with members of the Central Panel of the Judges at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road this morning.

At 11.45 am, Chairman of the Leading Committee for Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Chairman of the Work Committee Commander of No 3 Military Region Col Win Maung, arrived at the National Theatre and met with members of the Central Panel of the Judges of the competition.

Then, the commander heard reports of members of the Central Panel of the Judges and fulfilled their requirements.

(14) Cash, gifts for Little Sisters Home for the Aged

YANGON, 29 Oct - Military attaches of foreign missions in Myanmar presented K 51,000 and foodstuff and medicines worth K 75,000 to Little Sisters Home for the Aged this morning.

Dean of Military Attaches in Myanmar Military Attache of US Lt-Col Probyn Thompson III, on behalf of the military attaches, presented the cash and gifts to In-charge of the home Mother Louisa and Father Adwen at the home.

Mother Louisa and Father Adwen spoke words of thanks.

(15) 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Art Competitions Work Committee meets

YANGON, 29 Oct-The Work Committee of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Art Competitions for University, College, Institute and Basic Education Schools held its first coordination meeting at Universities Central Council of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) this morning.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung made a speech on the occasion.

(16) YCDC delegation leaves for PRC

YANGON, 29 Oct-A Myanmar delegation led by member of Yangon City Development Committee U Aung Soe left here by air this morning for the People's Republic of China to attend the closing ceremony of International Horticultural Exposition A99 in Kunming.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of YCDC Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman of YCDC ,Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, member of YCDC Col Tin Soe and officials.

Member of the delegation Head of Public Relations and Information Department of YCDC U Hla Myint Swe also left on the same flight.

whole country with locally heavy falls in Mandalay, Magway and Yangon Divisions. The noteworthy amounts of
rainfall recorded were Yangon (Kaba-Aye) 4.84 inches, central Yangon 3.62 inches Magway 3.54 inches, Minbu 3.35
inches, Pyinmana 3.23 inches, Thaton and Zoungtu 2.72 inches each, Mingaladon 2.68 inches and Myingyan 2.28
inches.

Maximum temperature on Oct 28 was 27.0°C (81°F).

Minimum temperature on Oct 29 was 23.3°C (74°F).

Relative humidity at 0930 hours MST on Oct 29 was 93%.

Total duration of sunshine on Oct 28 was 0.3 hour approx.

Rainfall on Oct 29 was 68mm (2.68 inches) at Yangon Airport, 123m (4.84 inches) at Kaba-Aye and 92mm (3.62 inches) at central Yangon.

It is forecast the move northwards and cross Orissa coast India within next few hours. Weather is partly cloudy to cloudy elsewhere in the Bay of Bengal.

Valid till evening of 30th October 1999: Rain will be widespread in Kachin, Chin, northern Shan and Rakhine States, upper Sagaing, Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago Divisions and scattered in the remaining States and Divisions with likelihood of isolated heavy falls in upper Sagaing Division. Rakhine and Chin States. Degree of certainty is 10.0%.

State of the sea: Occasional squalls with rough seas will be experienced off and along Rakhine coast. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach 70 mph. Seas will be moderate elsewhere in Myanmar waters.

Outlook for subsequent two days: Continuation of rain upper Myanmar areas.

Forecast for Yangon and neighboring area for 30th October 1999: Some rain. Degree of certainty is 100%. Forecast for Mandalay and neighbouring area for 30th October 1999: One or two rain. Degree of certainty is 80%.  Weather outlook for last weekend of October 1999: During the coming weekend, rain will be widespread in Yangon Division and scattered in-Mandalay Division.
