(1) Boost economic and defensive might to ward off alien domination, interference in internal affairs General Maung Aye meets local authorities, officials in Loikaw

YANGON, 26 Oct - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye yesterday met with local authorities and departmental personnel in Loikaw, Kayah State.

The General and party then inspected the power plant and forest conservation sites in the surrounding areas.

At Baluchaung No 2 Hydel Power Project at  Lawpita, Loikaw Township, officials reported on rainfall of Loikaw and its surrounding areas, inflow of water to Moebye Reservoir and Innlay Lake and storage capacity of the two water bodies, power generation of Baluchaung No I and No 2 Hydel Power Plants, the condition of power plants, maintenance of the plants and efforts being made to improve the inflow of water to the reservoir.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut explained systematic arrangements being made for durability of the power plants and staff welfare programmes.

Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo and Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained tree plantation and the related tasks in beautifying Innlay Lake.

In giving suggestions, the General stressed the need to strive for boosting the generation capacity of all the power plants in the nation, to make systematic arrangements for beautifying Innlay Lake and Moebye Reservoir, to plant edible crops and trees in the compound of the power plant and to maintain the Loikaw Lawpita Road.

Back in Loikaw, the General and party met with members of Kayah State Peace and Development Council, division-level officials, local authorities and departmental personnel of Loikaw and Bawlake Districts and townships in the two districts and members of social organizations.

Chairmen of Loikaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Tun and Bawlake District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Min reported on areas of the respective districts and townships, population, health, education and agriculture and Kayah State Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Myint Swe on rainfall in Kayah State, crop cultivation and irrigation.

(2) K  l0m donated to Theinkyaungdawgyi of Pitakat Thonbon Five Nikaya Sarthintaik in Dagon Myothit (South)

YANGON, 26 Oct- Well-wisher Theravada Buddist monk Ashin Suvanna (Su San Li) of North Minsi Temple,
Meisai, Thailand, donated K 10 million to three-storey Theinkyaungdawgyi of Pitakat Thonbon Five Nikaya Sarthintaik on Pale Yadana Road in Ward 25/26, Dagon Myothit (South) Township, this evening, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The well-wisher Sayadaw explained the purpose of the donations.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted K 10 million donated by the well-wisher Sayadaw and presented a certificate of honour to the Sayadaw.

Afterwards, Padana Nayaka of the Sarthintaik the Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyan Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

After the donation ceremony, the Padana Nayaka of the Sarthintaik the Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee had photo taken with the congregation.

(3) Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition commences

YANGON, 26 Oct-The Seventh Myanmar Traditiona1 Cultural Performing Arts Competition, held in accord with the six objectives, commenced with a ceremony at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road here this morning, with an address by Patron of the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The six objectives are to rekindle in all the nation also patriotism and nationalist fervour, to uphold and safeguard Myanmar cultura1 heritage; to continue to promote and propagate Myanmar music, Myanmar dancing and genuine Myanmar performing arts, to uplift Myanmar national character; to contribute towards spiritual development of youths; and to guard against influence of the alien culture.

(4) Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition begins

YANGON, 26 Oct -The first-day events of the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition at different levels took place at the designated venues here today.

In today 's events, the competitors took part in the basic education level (aged 10-15) of the song competition with the song 'Thuwunnashan" and those in women's professional leve1 old and modern song competition with the song "Doh Myanmar''.

Events of professional level men's classical song competition and basic education level (15-20) girls' religious song competition will be held on 27 October morning.

Competitors took part in the events of dance competition at the National Theatre. Basic education level (15-20) girl's dance competition will be held on 27 October morning at the same venue and professional level men's dance competition in the afternoon.

At the Kanbawza Theatre of the Fine Arts Department, competitors took part in the professional level composing competition with the melody of the song "Hnit-hse Tayasut Nidan" under the supervision of Bogalay Tint Aung and party. Amateur level events will be held at the same venue on 27 October.

In the music competition at the Padonma Theatre in Sangyoung Township, competitors took part in women's amateur level and men's professional level piano events in the morning. In the afternoon, piano events of girls' basic education level (10-15) took place.

On 27 October morning, there will be xylophone events of women's professional level, girl's basic education level (15-20) and boys' basic education 1evel (5-10).

Everybody may enjoy the second-day programmes of the Competition at designated venues free of charge.

YANGON, 26 Oct-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Chief Representative Mr Zhang Suhunqing and party of Yangon-based Shandong Weichai Import & Export Corporation of Shandong Province of the People's Republic of China who called at his office this morning.

YANGON, 26 Oct-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Director-General Dato' Nik Kamaruddin Nik Abdul Kadir and party of Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority of Malaysia, accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato' Mohammad bin Noh, who called at the Commission office this morning.

Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(9)    300 members resign from Ngaputaw NLD

YANGON, 26 Oct-A ceremony to present resignations of 300 members of National League for Democracy of Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyawady Division, was held at Basic Education High School in Chaungwa Village of the township on 10.30 am on 16 July 1999.

Three hundred members of Naputaw Township NLD, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 16 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

At the resignations presentation ceremony, Township NLD member U Kyaw Myint, on behalf of all NLD members, explained the reason they quit the party and presented resignations to Joint-Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Thaung Myint.

    Summary of observations recorded at 09:30 hours MST: During the past 24 hours weather has been cloudy in Kachin,Chin, Rakhine and Kayah States, Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway Divisions and rain or thundershowers have been isolated in Shan State and Bago Division, scattered in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions and wide spread in the remaining areas with isolated heavy falls in Yangon and Taninthayi Divisions. The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were Kawthaung 4.33 inches and Coco Island 3.35 inches.

Minimum temperature on Oct 26 was 24.8°C (77°F).

Relative humidity at 0930 hours MST on Oct 26 was 92%.

Total duration of sunshine on Oct 25 was 4.8 hours approx.

Rainfall on Oct 26 was nil at Yangon Airport, lmm (0.04 inch) Kaba-Aye and 2mm (0.08 inch) at central Yangon.

Total rainfall since 1 January 1999 was 2706mm (106.54 inches) at Yangon Airport, 3254mm (128.11 inches) at Kaba-Aye and 3350mm (131.89 inches) at central Yangon.

Bay inference: According to the observations recorded at 12:30 hours MST today, yesterday's tropical depression over Andaman Sea and adjoining East Central Bay is centred at 110 miles East of Coco Island. It is forecast to move northwestwards. Weather is partly cloudy to cloudy elsewhere in the Bay. of Bengal.

Forecast valid till evening of 27th October 1999: Rain or thundershowers will be widespread in Mon and Rakhine States, Ayeyawady, Bago, Yangon and Magway Divisions, scattered in Chin and Kayah States and lower Sagaing Division and isolated in the remaining areas with isolated heavy falls in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions. State of the sea: Occasional squalls with rough seas are likely off and along Myanmar coast. Surface windspeed in squalls may reach 50 mph.
