(1) Politics, economy and defence are inter-related Senior General stresses need to effectively strive for progress of national economy

YANGON, 16 Oct - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and members left Lashio for Hsenwi by helicopter on 13 October.

Senior General Than Shwe gave necessary guidance.

The ministers, who were accompanying the Senior General, met departmental officials and service personnel at the town hall.

The Senior General and party left for Lashio by helicopter in the afternoon.

On 14 October, the Senior General left Lashio to Laukkai by helicopter.

Senior General Than Shwe met national race leaders of Shan State (North) Special Region-(1) at the hall of regional battalion.  Kokang national leaders reported on work done for development of cultivation and transport and requirements.

The Senior General then gave guidance.

The Senior General and party toured Laukkai.

The Senior General and party, senior military officers, officials and Kokang national race leaders posed for photo.

The Senior General left for Lashio by helicopter.

The Senior General arrived at the meeting hall.

The Senior General gave guidance.

The Headmistress and the teachers reported on multimedia classroom, domestic science music and art room.

(2) Senior General Than Shwe inspects construction works at Kalaw Station

YANGON, 16 Oct - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, currently in Lashio, flew to Heho Airport by helicopter on 15 October morning.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and party flew on to Kalaw by helicopter.

Senior General Than Shwe and party went on a tour of the construction site of Kalaw Station.

The Senior General gave instructions to officials and then left there for Taunggyi by helicopter.

(3)     Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing donate provisions to Sarthintaiks, nunneries in Taunggyi

YANGON, 16 Oct - A ceremony to donate provisions to 11 Pariyatti Sarthintaiks and four nunneries in Taunggyi, Shan State, was held at Myole Dhammayon of Atula Marazein Sutaung-pyi Pagoda, Taunggyi, this morning  with Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing in attendance.

The Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and encourage paid obeisance to the Sayadaws.

Afterwards, the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing presented provisions and offertories to the Sayadaw of Theindaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing offered provisions and robes to nuns.

Then, the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party shared merits gained.

After the ceremony, the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party,6,, went to Nyaungshwe by helicopter.

At 9 am, the Buddha Images arrived at the jetty where they were welcomed by the Senior General and party.

The Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing watched the boat races and presented prizes to winning teams in men's and women's divisions.

Afterwards, the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party went to the Kyaungdawgyi.
The Sayadaws presented replicas of the Buddha images to the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing.

The Senior General and party offered Shwethingan to the Buddha images and performed rituals of golden and silver showers.

The Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing made donations to the Kyaungtaik.

The Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party left for Heho by helicopter and then arrived back here by Tatmadaw flight.

(4)     Secretary-l attends ceremony to mark World Food Day

YANGON, 16 Oct - A ceremony to mark 1999 World Food Day was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, with an address by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address on the occasion.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l presented first, second and third prizes for outstanding performance in monsoon paddy cultivation to Bogale, Kyauktaga and Kyauletaw Townships respectively and outstanding performance in summer paddy cultivation to Kyaiklat. Mawlamyinegyun and Myaungmya Townships respectively.

The Secretary-l then presented prizes to Phado Aung San and party of Nyeinchanyay Ywathit in Hpa-an Township and Mongzin breeding farm of Honpang Co in Kengtung Township respectively for national races' outstanding performance in breeding poultry and pig.

(5)     Transport sector principally contributes toward further strengthening of national solidarity

YANGON, 16 Oct - The second four-monthly work co-ordination meeting of the Ministry of Transport took place in the meeting hall of the ministry this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

In his address, the Secretary-l said.

In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all the employees under the Ministry of Transport to strive for the promotion of efficiency of the transport sector and for the development which meets the international standard, to provide transport services which enable the passengers to travel with peace of mind and to endeavour for the swift and speedy flow of freight, the smooth flow of imports and the acceleration in the rate of economic growth

After the ceremony, the Secretary-l inspected mowers manufactured by Dalla Shipyards of Inland Water Transport.

(6)     Refresher course for private traditional medicine practitioners concludes

YANGON, 16 Oct - The two-month refresher course No 1 for private traditional medicine practitioners conducted by the Department of Traditional Medicine under the Ministry of Health, concluded in the meeting hall of the department this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

The minister quoted the speech made.

Then, the minister gave prizes to outstanding trainees.

(7)     26 members resign from Shwedaung Township NLD

YANGON, 16 Oct - Twenty-six members resigned from National League for Democracy of Shwedaung Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-six members of Shwedaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 26 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
