(1)    Secretary-1 receives UN Assistant Secretary-General

YANGON, 15 Oct-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Assistant Secretary-General of United Nations Mr Alvaro de Soto at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9.30 am today.  Also present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

YANGON, 15 Oct-Hailing the Seventh Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition, the dramatic show "Amara, Keinnari, Madi and Thanbula" of Dramatic actor Mandalay Thein Zaw and drama group, sponsored by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women' s Affairs, was performed at National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road at 6.30 pm today. Patron of Leading Committee for the Seventh Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Day Khin Win She attended the dramatic show.

(3)    Deputy Prime Minister views 1999 Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium
 

YANGON, 15 Oct-Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun viewed the 1999 Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium at Myanma Gems Mart on Kala Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun inspected gems and modern jewellery, jade figurines and jade lots to be sold at  fixed price, modern jewellery of Myanmar VES Joint-Venture Co Ltd, jewellery of private gems shops which are being displayed on the ground floor and jade blocks at the emporium.  Then, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun observed sales of jade lots through competitive bidding at the emporium and left there in the afternoon.

(4)    MIC Secretary meets foreign entrepreneurs

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met President Mr Claus Sudhoff of European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and party who called at the commission office this morning.They discussed investment matters. Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Managing Director Mr Ronald Ooi of Kim  Eng Holdings Ltd and party of Singapore who called at his office this morning.

(6)    Transport Minister holds four-monthly meeting

YANGON, 15 Oct-The second four.-monthly meeting for 1999 of the Ministry of Transport was held this morning at the  ministry, addressed by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said the ministry has 13 organizations five enterprises, six departments and associated airlines. Appraisals on the targets and implementation of works should be made in seeking better ideas. Road transport is developing with high momentum in the time of the present government. Realizing of year by year projects will ensure success in implementing short-term and long-term plans.

Afterwards, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry and officials presented accomplishments within the period.The meeting continues on 16 October.

(7)    Minister meets UN Assistant Secretary-General

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel met Assistant Secretary-General of United Nations Mr Alvaro de Soto who called at his office at 4 pm today.  They discussed matters pertaining to the progress of social and economic affairs of Myanmar and providing of UNDP assistance.Also present at the call were officials concerned.

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met UN Assistant Secretary-General Mr Alvaro de Soto who called at his office at 3 pm today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Col Soe Win and Head of Office Major Hla Soe.

(9)    Myanmar adheres to Bandung principles of peaceful co-existence    Myanmar never allows any organization which oppose neighbor

YANGON, 15 Oct-Over 20,000 people of various strata of life attended the mass meeting to condemn terrorism and destructive elements which was held at Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium-1 on Weizayanta Road in Thingangyun Township this morning.The meeting passed two motions calling for condemnation of terrorism and destructive elements and supporting the endeavours for peace, stability and development of the State.

(10)    Bangladesh Health Minister and   Regional Director of WHO leave

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh Mr Alhaj Salah Uddin Yousuf and Regional Director of WHO South-East Asia Region Office Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei left here by air this morning after attending the 17th Meeting of Health Ministers of Countries of WHO South-East Asia Region. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat, directors-general,  rectors and officials of the Ministry of Health, Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner and officials.

(11)    Minister for Health meets Nepalese counterpart

YANGON, 15 Oct - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Minister of Health of Nepal Dr Ram Baran Yadav who called at the Toungoo Hall of Traders Hotel this afternoon. Dr Ram Baran Yadav had attended the 17th Meeting of Health Minister's WHO South-East Asia Region.

YANGON, 14 Oct -Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh Mr Alhaj Salam Uddin Yousuf, accompanied by Ambassador of Mr Jahangir Saadat, who called at his office at 9 am today. Also present at the call were officials of the ministry.

(13)    Ministry of Labour holds second fourth-monthly meeting

YANGON, 15 Oct-The departments, the organizations and the committee offices of Ministry of Labour held the second fourth-monthly meeting 1999 at Pinlon Hall on Minye Kyawswa Road in Ward 43 in Dagon Myothit (North) this morning, attended by Minister for Labour Maj . Gen Tin Ngwe.

Then, heads of State and Division from Factories and General Labour Laws Inspection Department, Central Inland -Freight Handling Committee and Central  Trade Disputes Committee reported to.the meeting on their functions, social welfare work and future programme. Departmental heads took part in the discussion.Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein took part in the discussion.The first day session of the meeting ended in the evening.

(14)    MIC Secretary meets national investors

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister at the 5tate Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Myanmar investors at the Ministry of Commerce this afternoon.Also present on the occasion were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration and 300 entrepreneurs who have permits from MIC.

Making a speech on the occasion, Brig-Gen Maung Maung said as of 31 March 1999, 239 kinds of businesses have been allowed to run, and through inspecting production, taxes on exports and employing labour, a lot of weaknesses were found in production and export sectors.

The minister also called on them to be loyal to the State, their businesses and their surrounding, speaking of the need to present reports on appointing foreign experts, employing local labour in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the Labour Department.

(15)    Nepalese Health Minister visits Hlegu, Bago Townships

YANGON, 15 Oct-Minister of Health Dr Ram Baran Yadav of Nepal after attending the 1 7th Meeting of Health Ministers of Countries of WHO South-East Asia Region hosted in Myanmar for the first time, accompanied by deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Hla Pe and officials, visited Hlegu Hospital in Hlegu, Yangon Division. at 10 am today.

Officials of Intagaw village dispensary explained the functions of Intagaw village dispensary  Later. Dr Ram Baran Yadav and party visited Bago Township Hospital where Head of District Health Department Dr Daw Myint Myint Than and specialists conducted the minister round the hospital.

Then, the minister and party visited Shwemawdaw Pagoda, ShwethaSyaung reclining Buddha image, Kanbawzathadi Palace of King Bayint Naung and the museum in Bago.

(16)    Second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour continues

YANGON, 15 Oct-The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour, organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar Professional Golfer's Association and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd continued for the second day at Yaedagun Taung Golf Club in Mandalay this morning.Among the spectators were-President of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, executives and guests  Co-sponsors of the tour were Tiger Beer, Universal Consumer Goods Co Ltd, Yangon Airways, MIMS Logistics, Max, The Prince Airport Hotel, Soft Guide Computer, Canon and Wilson.

(17)    Jade lots fetch over US $ 2.7 million

YANGON, 15 Oct- The Mid-Year Gems Emporium continued for the second day at the Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road today.A total of 97 jade lots worth 2,788,733 US $ were sold through tender and competitive bidding systems from 9 am to 5 pm today.Jewellery and jade sculptures at fixed prices worth 5,051 US $ were sold at the gems emporium.Sale of jade lots continues tomorrow.

(18)    31 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 15 Oct-Thirty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty-one members of Myittha.Township NLD,Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 9 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
