(1) Minister meets Director of Schlumberger Co

YANGON, 7 Oct - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Director of Schlumberger Co of France Mr Roland Vandenbossche and party who called at his office this afternoon.

Also present at the call was Director of the Central Bank of Myanmar.

(2)  Journalism Course No 1/99 opened

YANGON, 7 Oct - Journalism Course No 1/99 sponsored by the News and Periodicals Enterprise of the Ministry of Information was opened this morning at the training hall of The New Light of Myanmar with an address by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

In conclusion, he urged all the trainees to earnestly learn subjects to be taught at the course, to create writings which, contribute to the flourishing of Union spirit and uplift of dynamism of patriotic spirit and national solidarity, to organize and educate people for the interests of the nation and to impart knowledge to people.

A total of 46 trainees including ten from News and Periodicals Enterprise, ten from Information and Public Relations Department, six from Myanmar Radio and Television, two from Printing and Publishing Enterprise, one from Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise, nine from Ministry of Defence, two from Ministry of Home Affairs and six from Union Solidarity and Development Association are attending the course, which will last five months.

At the course, veteran journalists and heads of respective departments will give lectures from 9 am to noon daily except public holidays.

(3)  Siege of Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok explained to diplomats, officials of UN agencies

YANGON, 7 Oct - A ceremony to explain to diplomats from foreign missions, military attaches and officials of UN agencies the siege of Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on 1 October by an armed group of terrorists was held at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this morning.

 General Staff Officer (Grade 1) Lt-Col Hla Min acted as master of ceremonies.

 Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win explained the purpose of holding the ceremony.

 Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Thein Swe explained the siege of Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on 1 October by an armed group of terrorists.

Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win replied to questions raised by diplomats.

(4)  K 1.25 million donated for Seventh Myanmar Traditional Performing Arts Competitions

YANGON, 7 Oct - The fourth ceremony to donate cash to the fund-raising and prize-presentation subcommittee of the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Performing Arts Competitions for 1999 was held in the meeting hall of Yangon City Development Committee this afternoon. The funds for the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Performing Arts Competitions have exceeded K 31.8 million.

(5)  36 members resign from Gyobingauk Township NLD

YANGON, 7 Oct - Thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Gyobingauk Township, Bago Division.

Thirty-six members of Gyobingauk Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Gyobingauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 20 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
