(4) Secretary- l receives Chairman of New Mon State Party (NMSP)
YANGON, 30 Aug - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of New Mon State Party (NMSP) U Nai Shwe Kyin, General Secretary U Nai Yaw Sa and members, peace negotiators U Khun Myat, U Nai Khin Maung and U Nai Pe Tin at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.
They discussed progress of transport, education, health, agriculture and livestock, production of hydroelectric power and economy in Mon State.

(4) Secretary-1 inspects sale of teak and hardwood through tender
YANGON, 30 Aug-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Head Office of Myanma Timber Enterprise in Ahlon Township this morning. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt viewed the process of selling teak and hardwood through tender.
Altogether 56 foreign companies were present to buy teak and hardwood through tender.
Then, Minister U Aung Phone reported to Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
on the extraction and sale of timber, future tasks and requirements. The
Secretary- 1 gave instructions and left.

(5) Work coordinated to
expedite administrative machinery for development of Bago Division
YANGON, 30 Aug - A meeting to coordinate work for expediting
administrative machinery for development of Bago Division took place in the
meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning, attended by
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Director-General of the General Administration Department U Aung Thein acted
as master of ceremonies.
In his address, the Secretary-2 said as Bago Division occupies a large area. it is necessary to make arrangements for the smooth administrative machinery and effective and expeditious management; the administration sector is required to contribute to efforts for development of the division and the region.
It is needed to correctly distribute power necessary for the administration
sector among different levels and to appoint new employees if there is a
shortage of staff.. The Secretary-2 encouraged all present to contribute to the
discussions. Minister Col Tin
Hlaing reported on administrative work
connecting the western part of Bago Division.Chief Justice U Aung Toe,
Attorney-General U Tha Tun and Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung took part in the
discussions.

(6) Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families, well-wishers offer provisions to Home for Aged Nuns
YANGON, 30 Aug - Families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated provisions and cash towards the funds of Home for the Aged Nuns in Mingala Taungnyunt Township, Yangon East District, at the venue this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Sister Susan of the Home for the Aged Nuns blessed the gathering.
Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General Staff Officer (Grade I) (Navy) Cmdr Tin Oo and Colonel General Staff (Air) (Mechanical) Col Hlaing Bwa offered rice donated by the families of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) to the Administrator.
Staff of departments and well-wishers presented 99 bags of rice, 25 viss of oil, 300 viss of iodized salt, 25 tubes of tooth paste, 18 viss of gram, 50 bottles of indigenous medicines, five medicinal books and 25 dozens of ointment bottles to
Afterwards, a ceremony to set up trust fund for the Home for the Aged Nuns took place.
Administrator Mother Louisa accepted K 316,070 donated by Secretary-2 of the
State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and
Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo Daw Khin Than Nwe and family, the State
Peace and Development Council, Yangon City development. Committee and
well-wishers. Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo explained the purpose of
the donations. Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun explained development
of the State. Sister Mary of the Home for the Aged Nuns spoke words of thanks.

(8) Agricultural inputs handed over for cultivation of opium substitute crops
YANGON, 30 Aug - A ceremony to hand over agricultural inputs provided by Japan to be used in boosting food production and growing opium substitute crops at the border areas, took place at Pyinmabin Depot On Pale Myothit Road in Mingaladon Township this morning . Present on the occasion were minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Ministers U Kyaw Tin and Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director-General of the Department for Progress of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin, Director-General of Development Col Myo Myint, Deputy Director- General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig- Hla Tin, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kamo and Minister-Counselor Mr Naoki Ito, Mr T Yoshida and Mr T Iwasaki of Japan International Cooperation Agency, Mr Richard Dickins of UNDCP, officials of Myanma Agriculture Services and representatives of national races from border areas.
Director-General Col Wunna Maung Lwin explained matters related to boosting food production, condition of farm equipment imported for the use of cultivating opium substitute crops, distribution of farm equipment to border areas, improvement of national races from border areas and cultivation of opium substitute crops.
Then, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kamo and Mr Richard Dickins of UNDCP made speeches.Director-General Col Wunna Maung Lwin, Ambassador Mr Kamo, Mr Richard Dickins and Mr T Yoshida handed over documents related to farm equipment to representatives of national races.
Director-General Col Wunna Maung Lwin also presented documentary video tapes and photos on efforts for boosting food production, arrival of fertilizers and farm equipment for cultivation of opium substitute crops, systematic storage and distribution of fertilizers and farm equipment to border areas. On behalf of representatives, representative U Aung Myint from Wa region spoke words of thanks.
After the ceremony, the minister, the guests and representatives inspected farm equipment to be sent to border areas.
Today, trucks loaded with fertilizers left for Wa region, Kokang region
and Kachin Special Region-l and trucks loaded with tractors left for Chin
region.

(9) Seminar on AFTA Process begins in Mandalay
YANGON, 30 Aug-The Seminar on AFTA Process sponsored by Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan and organized by Myanmar Institute of Strategic and international Studies and Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council began at the Swan Hotel Mandalay this morning.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint extended greetings. Minister for ASEAN Economic Affairs Brig-Gen Abel delivered~an opening address. Director-General of ASEAN Affairs Department U Aye Lwin explained about the seminar. Mr Yoshinobu Oniri from Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Japan spoke words of thanks.

(10) Minister for Transport inspects Myanma Shipyards
YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials arrived at Myanma Shipyards in Kamayut Township this morning. Managing Director U Percy Maung Maung of MS reported on arrangements for production of firewood substitute briquette and assembly of machinery.
The minister and party inspected the machinery for production of briquette, renovation of Myatyadana, a cruise liner for tourists in Bagan region, docking of a 500-ton cargo barge and repair of Phar Shwe Kyaw Ywa vessel.
The minister also inspected building of a 60-metre vessel for lava Marine Lines Pte Ltd of Singapore and a 56-metre offshore supply vessel.
The minister gave instructions on completion of vessels in time and
worksite safety.

(11) Minister for Culture inspects reconstruction of Shwebo Yedana Mingala Palace in Shwebo
YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Director-General of Department of Archaeology U Nyunt Han, Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Zaw Than and officials inspected reconstruction of Shwebo Yadana Mingala Palace in Shwebo on 29 August.
The palace was built by King Alaungmintaya U Aung Zeya in 1115.
Assistant Engineer U Zaw Win reported on progress of work and requirements. The
minister inspected construction of Shwetaiktaw, Saryintaik, Myenanpyatthat and
Nanmapyatthat, bronze statue of U Aung Zeya and burial urn.

(12) Press Conference held to further expose subversive activities of some NLD members and anti-Government organizations
YANGON, 30 Aug - A Press Conference to expose activities perpetrated by some NLD members in collusion with anti-government organizations within the country and without to create civil unrest in September 1999, to military attaches of foreign embassies was held at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this morning.
Present on the occasion were Deputy Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, officials of the Office of the Strategic Studies and Defence Services Intelligence, military attaches of foreign embassies led by Dean of Military Attaches Corps Military Attaché of the Embassy of the Russian Federation Col Vladimir I Kontchakov.
Brig-Gen Kyaw Win made a speech.
Then, the military attaches viewed the seized exhibit photographs, documents, badges and posters on display in the hall.
In replying to their queries, the officials said that the news that schools will be closed in the beginning of September, is not true; it is but a rumour spread by unscrupulous persons; the term 'four nines' is just a coincidence of date; it doesn't make any sense to create unrest and demonstration; as unscrupulous persons are resorting to various means to create unrest, there are some incidents of posting up and distributing leaflets; but, the majority of the people do not wish the outbreak of unrest and demonstration; therefore,-the people inform the.authorities of destructive elements as soon as they get information.The Press Conference came to an end at 10.30 am.

(13) National Supervisory Committee on Y2K holds meeting
YANGON, 30 Aug- The National Supervisory Committee on Y2K Work Problem held meeting 6/99 at the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon, attended by Chairman of National Supervisory Committee on Y2K Work Problem Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin.
Also present on the occasion were members of the Committee and others. Progress of the respective sub-committees was report to the meeting.Secretary of the Committe Dr Kyaw Thein reported on international affairs and works to be done.
Myanmar is undertaken the works to be ready for Y 2K matters during
September an October.

Convening Commission meets
YANGON, 30 Aug-National Convention
Convening Commission held its meeting at the meeting hall of the
commission, at 2 pm today.
It was attended by Chairman of the commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members.
National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention
Convening Management Committee reported matters relating to National Convention,
followed by a general round of discussion. The meeting ended with concluding
remarks by Maj Gen Saw Lwin.

(15) Opium seized in Phakant
YANGON, 30 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local battalion, local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Khin Mar Swe, daughter of U Hset Kyi of No 1/100, Ward 1, Phakant Township, on 25 July.
The members seized two packets of opium weighing 2.2862 kilograms in the bedroom and nabbed the owner of the house and opium trafficker Myint Swe of A/80, Mashikahtaung Ward of Phakant Township.
Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(16) 58 members resign from Letpadan Township NLD
YANGON, 30 Aug-Fifty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division.
Fifty-eight members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their
own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty
Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 7 May 1999 as
they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
