(1) Special Refresher Course No 3 for Basic Education Teachers opened
YANGON, 28 Aug- A ceremony to open Special Refresher Course No 3 for Basic Education Teachers was held at Yadana Hall of Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, this morning, with an opening address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. After the opening ceremony, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met trainee teachers.
Altogether 998 trainee teachers from Education Colleges and States and
Divisions are attending the four-week course.

(2) MEC Chairman attends opening ceremony of BEHS multimedia classrooms in Mandalay
YANGON, 28 Aug Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here by Tatmadaw aircraft for Mandalay yesterday morning and arrived there at 1.30 am.
Then, the opening ceremonies of Multimedia Classroom of Schools under the Basic Education Department were held at respective schools in the afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the stone plaque of multimedia classroom at the school.
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the arts room of the school.
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech on the occasion.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected Mandalay GEC Sugar Mill in Industrial Zone-2.
This morning, the Secretary-1 and party, accompanied Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, left by helicopter for Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin.
The Secretary-1 delivered an address at the opening of Special Refresher Course No 3 for Basic Education Teachers .
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected making of bird cage and various species of bird in the cage and planting of orchid.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then paid obeisance to Maha Arnthtoo Kantha Hsutaungpyi Pagoda in PyinOoLwin.
Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin reported to the Secretary-1 on the installation of telephone.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions and inspected the new building of Mandalay International Airport.
Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived back here in the
evening.

(3) Monsoon paddy cultivated on over 2.2 million acres in Bago Division
YANGON, 28 Aug - A ceremony to mark the completion of ploughing work for cultivation of monsoon paddy for 1999-2000 took place in the field of Kali Village beside Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Bago Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Then, the Secretary-2, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung presented the first, second, and third prizes to Bago District Team-A, Toungoo District Team-B and Pyay District Team-A respectively.
In his speech, the Secretary-2 said the divisions on which the State can rely for cultivation of paddy and crops include Bago Division.

Managing Director of SI Company Ltd Dr Mya Thida, Managing Director of Super One
Company Ltd Daw San San Yee and Chairman of Dagon International Ltd U Win Aung
reported on reclamation of fallow and virgin lands and arrangements for
cooperation with local people in carrying out agricultural work.

(4) Permits issued to entrepreneurs to reclaim 125,000 acres of vacant, fallow and virgin lands in Bago Division
YANGON, 28 Aug-A ceremony to present permits to reclaim vacant, fallow and virgin lands in Bago Division to entrepreneurs was held at Thiri Oktha Hall in Oktha Myothit in Bago this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The Secretary-2 said similar ceremonies were held in Pakokku in Magway Division on 9-1-99, Htantabin in Yangon Division on 13-1-99, Pantanaw in Ayeyawady Division on 18-1-99 and in Shan State (South) on 21-8-99.
The Secretary-2 met the entrepreneurs.
Altogether 125,021 acres of fallow and virgin lands have been given to
20 groups of entrepreneurs for cultivation.

(5) Provisions presented to members of Sangha, nuns in Bago
YANGON, 28 Aug - A ceremony to donate provisions to members of the Sangha and nuns from 31 Sarthintaiks in Bago was held at Buddha Athan Dhamma Beikmandaw in Bago this afternoon.
Agga MahaKammahtanacariya Waibu Dhamma Yeiktha Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kodanna invested the congregation with the Five Precepts.
Afterwards, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.
Then, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun formally opened the exhibition.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected briquette production machine, sample briquettes and stoves which use firewood substitute fuel produced by private entrepreneurs.
Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo called for extensive use of briquettes
and sale of stoves at reasonable prices.

(6) National Seminar on Malaria begins
YANGON, 28 Aug- A ceremony to open the National Seminar on Malaria was held at Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road in Dagon Township this morning, attended by Minister for Health Mai-Gen Ket Sein.
First, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an opening address. He spoke.
Malaria is now reemerging in the world. The reasons for the re-emergence are:
(a) population migration for economic reasons
(b) changing meteorological condition
(c) drug resistance of malaria parasites
(d) insecticide resistance of malaria vectors
(e) high implementation cost and
(f) scarcity of resources
In conclusion, for the benefit of the entire nation, once again I would like to request all the professionals to discuss enthusiastically to bring out the future action plan suitable with local condition for the control of malaria which is the major health problem of the country.
The seminar continues tomorrow.

(7) 31 members resign from Yesagyo Township NLD
YANGON, 28 Aug-Thirty-one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Yesagyo Township, Magway Division.
Thirty-one members of Yesagyo Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yesagyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on S February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
