(1)    State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends condolence to Turkey

YANGON, 21 Aug-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the  Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe has sent a message of condolence to  Mr Suleyman Demirel, President of the Republic of Turkey, for the devastating  earthquake in the Republic of Turkey that has caused heavy loss of lives and  serious damages.

(2)     General Maung Aye addressed the graduation parade Under-Officers  Course No 27 of the Tatmadaw (Army) Officers Training School
 
YANGON, 20 Aug- On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services,  Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army)  General Maung Aye addressed the graduation parade of Under-Officers Course No  27 of the Tatmadaw (Army) Officers Training School at the OTS Parade Grounds  in Bahtoo Tatmyo this morning.

At present, the strength of the Tatmadaw is more powerful on all forces when  compared with that of the Tatmadaw in 1988. Thus it can serve with extra  momentum in safeguarding Our Three Main National Causes. ; At present, the
Tatmadaw hand-in-hand with the people can ward off all dangers threatening  the nation. Cadets should strive their utmost for further progress of these  developing conditions.

Tatmadaw together with the reserve forces for national defence-Union  Solidarity and Development Association, which has 11.8 million members,  Myanmar Police Force, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and War Veterans Organization-  are serving the national wellbeing without fail at the rspective places.

The cadets while joining hands with the reserve forces should always keep up  the military, political, economic and administrative vigilance against  destructive threats with political, economic and administrative awareness.

Later, General Maung Aye left the parade ground.

(3)    General Maung Aye arrives at Bahtoo Tatmyo

YANGON, 20 Aug - Vice-Chainnan of the State Peace and Development Council  Deputy Commanderin-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army)  General Maung Aye left here bv Tatmadaw flight for Heho, Shan State yesterday  to attend the Graduation Parade of Under-Officers Course No 27 of the  Tatmadaw (Army) and to inspect the projects for development of the region.

General Maung Aye and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and  Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council  Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Commandant of Command and  General Staff , College Brig-Gen Soe Tint, Tactical Operations Commander Col  Khin Maung Soe,senior Tatmadaw officers and Shan State, District and Township  level departmental officials.

General Maung Aye and party proceeded to Bahtoo Tatmyo in Yaksauk Township  and arrived there at 3.30 pm.

Then, General Maung Aye and party stopped over at the Guest House of Bahtoo
Station.

(3)     Secretary-2 meets officials, town elders of Yaksauk Township Shan State

YANGON, 20 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen  Tin Oo who accompanied Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development  Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief  (Army) General Maung Aye, met departmental officials at township level,  chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils and members and town  elders Yaksauk Township at Yathawady Hall in Yaksauk, southern Shan State, on  Making a speech on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said General Maung Aye and  party came to the region to inspect regional security and development tasks  and fulfil requirements.

Regional authorities have been assigned duties to build Kalaw and Yaksauk  townships in southern Shan State as model townships for the development of  the region, he noted and spoke of the need for local people to cooperate in  the development tasks at full capacity.

YANGON, 20 Aug- Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment .  Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Managing Director of Myanmar  Sampoerna Tobacco Co Ltd Mr Jeffrey Chandra who called at his office at 10.30  am today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development  Council ChairmanĘs Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission  Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed matters related to function of Myanmar Sampoerna Tobacco Co  Ltd in Myanmar.

YANGON, 20 Aug- Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein met AFP  Bangkok-based Bureau Chief In-charge of Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia Mr  Philippe Agret who ca11ed at Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road at 9.10  am today.

(6)    Minister meets Ambassador of France

YANGON, 20 Aug- Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports  Brig-Gen Sein Win met Ambassadorof France Mr Bernard Du Chaffaut who called  at Kyauksein Hall of National Indoor Stadium 1 at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were General Secretary of MOC Director-General of  Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo  Ciin Pau and Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung.

(7)    Minister inspects bridge extension project
 
YANGON, 20 Aug- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by  officials, inspected the extension project of Khabaung Bridge on  Yangon-Mandalay High- 1 way near Toungoo on 18 August morning.

In the briefing hall of the project, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myint  Lwin reported to the minister on arrangements for implementation of the  project. The minister gave instructions for timely completion of the project,  ensuring worksite safety and meeting the set standards and attended to the  needs.

The project is located on Yangon-Mandalay Highway near Toungoo. On  completion, a new four-lane bridge will emerge.

(8)    Minister inspects factories under Myanma General and Maintenance  Industries

YANGON, 20 Aug-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Deputy  Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and departmental heads, arrived at Leather  Factory of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries in Hline Township this  morning. The minister inspected production process of the factory and gave  instructions on the works.

In the hall of the factory, the minister met officials and discussed strong  and weak points of the factory. The minister and party inspected Mayangon  Leather Factory branch and No 1 Shoe Factory. He inspected production of the  factories and attended to their needs. The minister also inspected staff  welfare programme of the shoe factory.

YANGON, 20 Aug-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win  Tin met Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak and Chairman of Shinawatra  Satellite Public Co Ltd Mr Dumrong Kasemsart and party who called at his  office at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were Managing Director U Maung Maung Tin of Myanma  Posts and Telecommunications and officials.

(10)    Minister meets visitors of Singapore and Malaysia

YANGON, 20 Aug-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Technical Director  of Pec-Tech Group of Singapore Mr A J Devanesan, accompanied by Managing  Director of Mykoin Kartika Truba Engineering Co Ltd Mr Mansyur Tampubolon,  who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Similarly, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Executive Director of  Ingerop Asia Sdn Bhd of Malaysia Mr Jacques Valenza, accompanied by Managing  Director of Compagnie De Fives-Lille Dr Jan Skorupa, and party who called at  his office at 1 pm today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and  directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises .

(11)     Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts leaves

YANGON, 20 Aug-Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh Mr Kalpa  Ranjan Chakma and party left here by air for home at 10.30 am today.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for  Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein  Nyunt, Deputy Ministers U Kyaw Tin and Brig-Gen Than Tun, directors-general  and officials, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat and embassy staff.

(12)     RIPS of Japan, Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International  Studies hold seminar
 
YANGON, 20 Aug- A seminar on the interaction between the five-member study  mission from Research Institute for Peace and Security (RIPS) of Japan and  Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar-ISIS) was  held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

The purpose of the study mission is to implement the two-year research  project on Myanmar and Cambodia with a view to examining the impact of their  entry into ASEAN. The seminar was chaired by member of Myanmar-ISIS  Director-General U Aye Lwin of ASEAN Affairs Department. Leader of the  mission Director of the Project Professor Mr Seki Tomoda explained the  purpose of the Study Mission, which was followed by free and frank exchange  of views.

Present on the occasion were officials of Myanmar Institute of Strategic and  International Studies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of Strategic  Studies of the Ministry of Defence, National AFTA Unit, Ministry of Finance  and Revenue, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of National Planning and Economic  Development, Ministry of Industry-2, Institute of Economics and Union of  Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

After the seminar, the study mission called on Chairman of Myanmar-ISIS  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung.

(13)    MPF D-G attends Myanmar-Thailand meeting on drugs  enforcement cooperation

YANGON, 20 Aug-Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe  Win, accompanied by officials, arrived at Kawthoung on 15 August. The  director-general was welcomed there by Base Tactical Operations Commander Col  Zaw Min, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt Col Wan Maung  and Deputy Division Police Commander Police Lt-Col Aung Gyi.The MPF  director-general inspected the police station and office in Kawthoung.

He also inspected Kawthoung Jail. On 16 August, Secretary of Central  Committee for Drug Abuse Control the MPF Director-General and party attended  the third cross-border meeting on drugs enforcement cooperation of Myanmar  and Thailand and UNDCP at the Royal Princess Hotel in Ranong, Thailand, on 17  and 18 August.

The basic level Myanmar and Thailand third cross-border meeting on drugs  enforcement cooperation was held on 17 August, attended by Deputy Director  Police Lt-Col Sit Aye and Myanmar delegation and Drug Enforcement Bureau of  Thailand Director Mr Sukhum Opasniputh and members.

On 18 August, Secretary of CCDAC Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and Myanmar  delegation, Secretary-General Mr Payont Pantsri and members of Drug  Enforcement Bureau of Thailand and drug enforcement adviser of UNDCP Mr Yngve  Danling attended the high-ranking officials meeting.They then met media  persons at the Press conference. The Myanmar delegation arrived back here via  Kawthoung on 19 in August.

(14)     Voters of Myinmu Township express-no confidence in NLD representative-elect

YANGON, 20 Aug - Over 26,192 eligible voters of Myinmu Township Constituency  No 2, Sagaing District in Sagaing Division, submitted signed declarations  expressing no confidence in U Tin Ngwe who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw  Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty  Democracy General Election from Myinmu Township Constituency No 2 and no  support for him at the rallies held at Wanpyi Village, Lethtoketaw Village. Twingyi Village, Taw-chaungU Village and Padattaing Village in Myinmu  Township Sagaing Division, on 6 August morning.

Over 10,241 local people from these villages attended the rallies, and  delegates of respective villages presented declarations expressing no  confidence in U Tin Ngwe and no support for him signed by 26,}92 eligible  voters to members of the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission.

Altogether 16,151 eligible voters or 52.21 per cent of Myinmu Township  Constituency No 2, Sagaing District in Sagaing Division voted for U Tin Ngwe  of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed declarations expressing no  confidence in U Tin Ngwe and no support for him totalled 26,192 or 84.67 per  cent.

(15)    17 members resign from Kyauktaga Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Aug -Seventeen members resigned from the National League for  Democracy of Kyauktaga Township, Bago Division.

Eight members of Kyauktaga Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own  volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyauktaga Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party  concerned on 12 January 1999, four followed suit on 4 February 1999 and five  on 12 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics  of NLD.
