(1)  Secretary-1 inspects implementation of multi-sectoral development projects in Kachin State

YANGON, 17 Aug - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races and Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and members, accompanied by Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, inspected preparations for construction of the bridge across Nanhsanyan Creek on Bhamo-Myitkyina Road in Waingmaw Township on 15 August.

The Nanhsanyan Creek bailey Bridge is 300 feet long and 12 feet wide and it can bear 20-ton of loads.

The Secretary-l and party went to Myitkyina in the afternoon.

The Secretary-l and party took the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silavamsa.

The Secretary-l and the commander accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Pyilonchantha orphan youth parahita development centre.  The Secretary-1 presented rice and clothes to Secretary of the development centre U Hla Win and clothes to 65 youths.

The Secretary-l then presented clothes, books and stationery and goods to 37 youths.

The Secretary-l and party inspected hostel and nursery of the school.

Afterwards, they proceeded to the People's Hospital in Myitkyina where they were welcomed by Head of Kachin State Health Department Dr Than Pe and specialists, doctors and staff.  The Secretary-l and party spent the night at the guest house of Northern Command. The Secretary-l and national race leaders of Special Region-1 and 2 posed for photo.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected renovation of the pagoda.  They observed Kyahmauk Kyahlan and Hngetpyawphu.

The Secretary-l and party then proceeded to central control office (Manpain) of agricultural farm of regiments and units in Moele Creek area.

The Secretary-1 and party went to the site of Sinkham Port, 20 miles downstream Bhamo. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, departmental officials and USDA members.

The Secretary-l and party inspected waterways and the site chosen for construction of Sinkharn port.

Together with officials, the Secretary-1 inspected the 66 kv sub-power station in Bhamo.  After presenting clothing and stationery to the students, he inspected the school.

He then attended the opening of multimedia classrooms at Basic Education High School No 1 and BEHS No 2 in Bhamo.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party rested for the night at Bala Min Htin Guest House in Bhamo.  This morning, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the paddy transplanting competition of Bhamo District USDA of Kachin State at Sihe Village in Bhamo Township.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party visited Shwekyayna Maha Pagoda in Bhamo, and paid homage to the Buddha Image.

The Secretary-l attended to the requirements.

The Secretary-l and party arrived back here by air in the afternoon.

(2)  Secretary-2 receives Commander of Yunnan Province Military Command (YPMC)

YANGON, 17 Aug - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief. of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo received Commander of the Yunnan Province Military Command (YPMC) of Chinese People's Liberation Army Maj-Gen Wang Jitang and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

The Commander of the Yunnan Province Military Command (YPMC) of Chinese People's Liberation Army and party were accompanied by Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and Military Attache Sr Col Ma Shoudong.

(3)  Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts arrives

YANGON, 17 Aug - A delegation led by Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh Mr Kalpa Ranjan Chakma arrived here by air this evening to study agriculture, environmental conservation and forestry in hilly regions in Myanmar.

The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Directors-General Col Myo Myint and Col Wunna Maung Lwin, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat and embassy staff.

(4)  Post-graduate Diploma Course No 1 on Hospital Administration ends

YANGON, 17 Aug - Post-graduate Diploma Course No 1 on Hospital Administration of the Medical Science Department concluded at the department this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

The minister then presented diploma certificates to the trainees.

(5)  Planning Skills Grade-1 Course opened

YANGON, 17 Aug - The Planning Skills Grade-1 Course No 25 for deputy heads of State/Division and District Planning Departments of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development was opened at the meeting hall of National Archives Department on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road this morning.

Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha gave an opening speech.

Altogether 83 trainees of State/Division and District Planning Departments are attending the course.

(6)  USDA Management Course concludes

YANGON, 17 Aug - Union Solidarity and Development Association Executives' Multiplier Management Course No 1/ 99 organized by Mayangon, Hline and Kamayut Township USDAs and social associations concluded at Kyaikwaing Youth Training Centre of Social Welfare Department on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this morning attended by USDA CEC member Col Tin Hlaing.  Col Tin Hlaing presented prizes to the outstanding trainees. Later, they attended the annual meeting of the Mayangon Township USDA.

(7)  Minister meets visitors from Singapore

YANGON, 17 Aug - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Singapore Branch Head of Network Management (Asia-Pacific) Deutsche Bank AG of Singapore Mr Frankie K H Chan and party who called at the MIC Office at 10 am today.

Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(8)  Minister meets Ambassador of United Kingdom

YANGON, 17 Aug - Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe met Ambassador of United Kingdom Dr John Jenkins who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein and heads of departments

(9)  Opium, arms seized in Kutkai

YANGON, 17 Aug - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Daw Gyan Hsa, 50, daughter of U Aik San, who lives in Monyulay Village of Kutkai Township on 4 August.

The authorities seized 64 cakes of opium weighing 21.81676 kilograms.

According to further information, the team searched the house of Aik Ngo (a) Yan Tin Shin, 40, son of U Aik Sai of Monyulay Village.

They seized eight cakes of opium weighing 11.10394 kilograms, two M-16s, two magazines and 28 rounds of ammunition.

Action is taken against them under the law.

(10)  23 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 17 Aug - Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-three members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
