(1)  Meeting No 2/99 of the Central Committee for Industrial Development

YANGON, 12 Aug - Meeting No 2/99 of the Central Committee for Industrial Development took place in the meeting hall of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon, attended by Chairman of the Central Committee for Industrial Development Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye. In his address, the General said now the agriculture sector is making progress, and it can be attributable to the right economic policies, guidance and encouragement of the Government; with the development of the agriculture sector, it is necessary to strive for harmonious development of the industrial sector of the State; it is not sure to achieve industrial development if conventional methods continue to be employed.

Encouragement is to be given to private industrialists to be able to establish industries in the industrial zones; specially, priority is to be given to the development of three kinds of industries necessary for the State such as industries contributing to mechanized farming, industries manufacturing machinery and equipment and import-substitute industries.

So, when industries are established at the industrial zones, some kinds of taxes are to be exempted and some to be reduced for a certain term; similarly, interest rate for loans disbursed by the banks to make investment is to be reduced; to sum up, it is necessary to employ proper management and business systems for the development of private industries at the industrial zones encouraged and established by the Government.

Secretary of the Central Committee Minister U Thaung reported on matters related to taxes, investment, Myanmar Investment Law and others included in the discussions contributed by representatives of 18 industrial zones at the seminar on development of industries from the industrial zones sponsored by Myanma Industrial Development Committee at the Ministry of Industry-2 from 2 to 9 August. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported on the study tour of representatives of industrial zones to the factories and plants and the manufacturing of machinery spare parts.

The General attended to the requirements.  The meeting came to a close at 2.30 pm.

(2)  Central Supervisory Committee for Participation of Myanmar in International Trade Fair in South Africa meets

YANGON, 12 Aug - A meeting of the Central Supervisory Committee for Participation of Myanmar in International Trade Fair in South Africa was held at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road this afternoon, attended by Secretary- l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said it is the first time for Myanmar to take part in a trade fair in an African nation, and despite the sparse relations and contacts between Myanmar and South Africa in the past, bilateral relations have been promoted after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Secretary-1 said he had noticed there are mutual interests, trade prospects and possibilities of Myanmar's products to penetrate into the African market during his visit to South Africa to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly-elected President of South Africa.

Thus, arrangements were made for participation of Myanmar in the International Trade Fair to be held in South Africa in October, and the arrangements are going well now, he said.

Through participating in the trade fair, African nations will know Myanmar and her products more, and that will promote relations between Myannar and African nations, he noted.

Therefore, the trade fair is important as it will open a new role for promotion of trade, communication and relations between Myanmar and African nations, he said.

The Secretary-l called on those, who will participate in the trade fair, to work in one mind as well as in unison.

Afterwards, Chairman of the Central Committee Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than reported on preparations for participation in the trade fairs, followed by a report of Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Minister Commander Myo Tint on arrangements for it.

After the meeting, the Secretary-l inspected goods to be displayed at the trade fair by Myanmar.

(3)  Secretary-2 gives instructions on reclamation of fallow  and virgin lands

YANGON, 12 Aug - A coordination meeting between officials and pate entrepreneurs who are being engaged in reclaiming fallow and virgin lands in Ayeyawady, Yangon, Bago, Magway and Taninthayi Divisions in the meeting hall of the Prime Minister's Office on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said it is heartening to see that the private entrepreneurs are reclaiming fallow and virgin lands in States and Division zealously; but, according, to the reports, some companies having reclamation permits, have not begun work yet.

The Secretary-2 urged them to put forward their difficulties openly.

He added that there are reports of some entrepreneurs who want high grounds to be permitted.

He urged the entrepreneurs to transfer the allotted acres of wetlands if they could not reclaim them for various reasons.

He said that the Government will help solve difficulties, if any, through cooperation.

Then, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint reported on arrangements to give permits for reclamation of wetlands, distribution of fuel oil and assistance being provided for agricultural works.

Then, entrepreneurs reported on their difficulties and requirements, availability of fuel oil and purchase of tractors.

Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung explained matters related to tractors, fuel oil, transport and communications. The Secretary-2 attended to requirements.

The meeting came to a close in the evening.

(4)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Managing Director of Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance

YANGON, 12 Aug - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director  of Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co Ltd of Japan Mr Hissho Kitamura and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

(5)  Minister meets Marketing Director of Green Paradise Co Ltd

YANGON, 12 Aug - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Marketing Director of Green Paradise Co Ltd Group of Thailand Mr Mickey Heart and party who called at his office at 12.40 pm today.

Also present at the call were Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

(6)  Malaysian Transport Minister and party arrive

YANGON, 12 Aug - At the invitation of Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Transport of Malaysia Dato Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik and wife and delegation arrived here by air this morning.

The visiting minister and party were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and wife, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and wife, Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad Bin Noh and wife and embassy staff, heads of department of the ministry.

Minister for Transport Dato Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik and party paid a courtesy call on Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe at his office this afternoon.

Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than and officials. They discussed bilateral cooperation in the transport sector between the two countries. Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe hosted dinner in honour of Malaysian Minister and wife and delegation at Karaweik Place in the evening.

(7)  Work coordinated to host tenth NTO meeting

YANGON, 12 Aug - A coordination meeting on hosting the tenth National Tourism Organizations Meeting of ASEAN member nations was held at the Strand Hotel this afternoon, attended by Minister of Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

Also present at the meeting were officials of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) Office, Yangon Command, Myanmar Police Force, the Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence, departments and enterprises related to the  tourism sector and officials.

In his address, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said national tourism organization of ASEAN member nations had hosted nine meetings with a view to promoting cooperation among ASEAN member nations for the development of tourism.

NTO meeting to be held in Yangon on 25 and 26 August is the tenth. Before becoming an ASEAN member, Myanmar, as an observer, attended the sixth NTO meeting in Singapore for the first time.

The seventh NTO meeting was held together with the ASEAN Ministerial Tourism Forum held in Cuba, the Philippines, in January 1998, and the Myanmar delegation led by the Minister for Hotels and Tourism attended it.

The Myanmar delegation led by the director-general attended the eighth NTO meeting held in Chiang-Rai, Thailand, in July, 1998.

The ninth NTO meeting was held together with ASEAN Ministerial Tourism Forum in Singapore in January 1999, and the Myanmar delegation led by the minister for hotels and tourism attended it.

Arrangements are being made to host the tenth NTO meeting at the Traders Hotel in Yangon on 25 and 26 August.

According to the proposal of the ASEAN Secretariat, meetings on ASEAN Communications Team for Tourism and ASEAN Task Force on Tourism Investment will be held together with NTO meeting on 24 August.

The meeting is to be attended by representatives of ASEAN member nations as well as representatives of ASEAN and ASEAN Promotion Centre in Tokyo. In conclusion, the minister urged all to contribute to hosting of the meeting. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

(8)  Minister meets Director of WHO

YANGON, 12 Aug - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Director of South East Asian Region of World Health Organization Dr Rita Thapa who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein also met General Manager of Core Health Care Ltd of India Mr G R Nithyanandam at 3.30 pm.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo and officials.

(9)   Treatments and Rehabilitation Course for Drug Addicts opens

YANGON, 12 Aug - The opening ceremony of Treatment and Rehabilitation Course No 48/99 for Drug Addicts was held at Shwepyitha Camp in Wethtikan Village, Pyay Township on 9 August morning.

Chairman of Pyay District Drug Abuse Control Committee Chairman of Pyay District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Win made a speech.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Director of CCDAC Police Lt-Col Myint Wai and officials, members of Pyay District and Township Peace and Development Councils, USDA members, departmental officials.

(10)  Coord meeting on Photo Contest on Culture and Tradition of ASEAN

YANGON, 12 Aug - The third coordination meeting on Myanmar Photographic Society Golden Jubilee Photo Contest on Culture and Tradition of ASEAN Member Nations was held in Dagon Township this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Organization  Leading Committee for MPS Golden Jubilee Photo Contest on Culture and Tradition of ASEAN Member Nations Deputy Chief of Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and members, patrons of MPS and the chairman and executives and chairmen and members of subcommittees.

Vice-Chairman of the Committee Head of Department Col Thein Swe of Office of Strategic Studies explained about the contest.

Afterwards, officials of respective subcommittees took part in discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Brig-Gen Kyaw Win.

(11)  Myanmar women's rowers win more gold in 20th SEA Games

YANGON, 12 Aug - Myanmar women won one more gold in women's 22-crew 800m division of traditional boat race of the 20th SEA Games today with the record of 3:14.37 and Indonesia was second and Brunei third. In men's 22-crew 800m final, Myanmar was second, Indonesia first and Thailand third.

Yesterday, Myanmar won three silver in the boat race, one silver each in track and field and sepak takraw and two bronze in martial arts.

Tha Htay of Myanmar won bronze in men's 70-75 kilo class of martial arts and Leh Leh Lin bronze in women's 55-60 kilo class.

(12)  Zaungtu Hydel Power Project inspected

YANGON, 12 Aug - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by Deputy Chief Engineer (Hydel Power) U Win Kyaw of Myanma.  Electric Power Enterprise and officials, inspected Zaungtu Hydel Power Project on 10 August.

With Project Director U Win Kyi, the minister inspected spill ways and sluice gates and other parts of the project.

On 11 August, the minister met officials and gave instructions on meeting standards and completing the work as targeted, making innovations, minimizing loss and wastage, working in cooperation, ensuring worksite safety and carrying out staff welfare programme.

(13)  36 members resign from Ngapudaw Township NLD

YANGON, 12 Aug - Thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngapudaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Nineteen members of Ngapudaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngapudaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 2 May 1999 and seventeen members followed suit on 3 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
