(1) Work coordinated for development of Myanmar Airways International
YANGON, 11 Aug - Meeting No 3/99 to coordinate works for development of Myanmar Airways International under the Ministry of Transport took place in the meeting hall of the ministry this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on the flying hours of MAI in July the number of passengers, tons of cargo, income and expenditure, thrifty use of expenditure and works for development of MAI.
U Maung Maung Ohn reported on measures taken for the decisions of the previous meeting.
Then, the ministers and officials reported on measures to be taken for the development of MAI. Replying to their reports, the Secretary-l said a total of three meetings including the present one had been held, and as a result, the set-up of MAI could be extended, remedial measures against weakness taken and expenditures reduced.
Therefore, the works for development of MAI are making progress to some extent.
The Secretary-l urged all to try to get more passengers, to render services in connection with domestic flights and international flights and to provide better services.
He called on members of the board of-directors to boldly make decisions for the interest of the airline and the State.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all to cooperate in striving for the development of MAI.
The meeting came to a close in the evening.

(2) Deputy Prime Minister meets foreign visitor
YANGON, 11 Aug - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Managing Director of Asia Pacific Bulk Terminal (Holdings) Pte Ltd Mr Stewart Soon who called at his office this morning.
They discussed investment matters, arrangement for industrial work based on agriculture and future programme.
Also present together with the Deputy Prime Minister were Minister at the
State Peace and Development Council Chairman' s Office and Secretary of MIC
Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials, officials of the Ministry of Transport.

(3) Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Minister tours Mandalay Division
YANGON, 11 Aug - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone inspected the Basic Education High School in Talaing Ywathit village, Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division, on 7 August. At Ywathit village in the township, the minister presented K 100,000 to renovate the monastery of the village.
During the visit to Bagyitaw Monastery in Kyauk-padaung Township, he presented K 250,000 to build a basic education middle school in the compound of the monastery.
At his meeting with Thedaw Auxiliary Fire Brigade, the minister stressed the need to increase the number of strength. He then inspected a pre-primary school and attended the ceremony to present USDA applications at the town hall in Wundwin. Together with Commander of No 99 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Htay Oo and officials, the minister met with teachers and their pupils at Tattwin Primary School and inspected the course conducted by Meiktila District USDA.
In Meiktila, he inspected a day care nursery, the fire station, he No.1 BEHS and the Parahita Geha.
At Paukchaung village, he visited the pre-primary school.

(4) Prizes presented to outstanding students, athletes of Central Command
YANGON, 11 Aug - A ceremony to present prizes to those outstanding in
education and sports was held at the Guest House of Mandalay Nanmyo at the
Headquarters of Central Command on 9 August in conjunction with j a ceremony to
provide cash assistance for students.
The commander made a speech on the occasion and provided exercise books for students and cash toward the funds for families of Tatmadaw members.
The deputy commander and officials presented prizes to winners in military code of conduct contest and extempore talks.
The Central Command won four first prizes, eight second prizes and four third
prizes in Defence Services Commander-in-Chiefs Shield sports championships and
69 gold, 124 silver and 90 bronze in individual events. Thirty athletes of
the command were selected for Tatmadaw selected teams and nine for national
teams. A total of 70 students of the command passed the 1998-99
Matriculation Exam with distinction.

(5) Minister urges PPE officials, MWJA members to promote literature
YANGON, 11 Aug - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met with officials of Sarpay Beikman Board of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise and central executive committee members of the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association this afternoon at Sarpay Beikman.
The minister discussed means to promote literature. U Myo Thant explained to the minister on history, organization and functions of Sarpay Beikman and U Kyaw Aung on plans to promote literature.
The minister said the ministry, PPE and Sarpay Beikman have the same aim in promoting literature and flourishing of translated literature. The bodies are giving encouragement to the people to promote their reading power to gain knowledge. All officials should make efforts for development of literature in cooperation and coordination.
Arrangements will be made through the Information and Public Relations Department to enable the people to read more. The ministry will make utmost efforts for progress of Myanmar literature and translated literature.
Afterwards, the minister and officials inspected Sarpay Beikman Public
Library, reference section, Sarpay Beikman Book Shop and the meeting hall of the
MWJA.

(6) Cash assistance presented to aged persons of Hlinethaya Township
YANGON, 11 Aug - Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) provided cash assistance to aged persons of Hlinethaya Township at Hlinethaya People's Hospital this morning.
Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a speech on the occasion. Chairman of Township MMCWA Daw Saw Mon explained future tasks.
Then, Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA (Central) Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented medicine and personal goods to aged persons. After the ceremony, Chairperson of MMCWA (central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party together with Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Zaw and officials inspected Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association at Ward 3 in Hlinethaya.
MMCWA (Central) Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party proceeded to the day care nursery of Maternal and Child Welfare Association in Ward 20 and presented toys to the children.
They met teachers and gave necessary instructions. Then, Vice-Chairperson Dr
Daw Khin Win Shwe donated cash for nutritious food to feed the children.

(7) Deputy Minister for Forestry inspects greening works
YANGON, 11 Aug - Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun met with Director of Mandalay Division Department for the Greening of Arid Zone U Kyaw Moe and Assistant Director of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Hsan at Taungtha Township Department for the Greening of Arid Zone on 6 August, and gave instructions on greening works to be carried out on Taungtha Hill. Then, the deputy minister and party went to Nanmyint Hill and Taungtha Hill and 4 inspected greening works.
They also inspected the herbal plant garden on Mount Popa.
Afterwards, the deputy minister and party proceeded to Tuywin Hill.
Assistant Director U Sein Myaing of NyaungU District reported on greening works of Taywin Hill.
The deputy minister gave instructions. On 7 and 8 July the deputy minister inspected preparations for shifting big banyan trees donated by the village-tracts onto Tantkyi Hill.
Afterwards, the deputy minister attended the meeting on shifting big trees at Kyungyaung Fertilizer Plant, and gave instructions on greening works of Tantkyi Hill.

(8) Books for Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs
YANGON, 11 Aug - Well-wisher of Sindewa and Wamoeaung Publishing Houses donated books to Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs at the meeting hall of the ministry this afternoon.
On behalf of the well-wishers, U Tun Yi (Soemoekyaw and Waing Waing Le Lottery Shop) explained about the donation. Minister Col Thein Nyunt spoke words of thanks.

(13) Myanmar gets silver in sepak takraw
YANGON, 11 Aug - Indonesia was first at the 400m 22-crew event at the traditional boat race of the 20th South-East Asian l Games in Brunei. Myanmar was second and Thailand third. In women's 800m 12-crew event, Indonesia was first, Myanmar second and Thailand third.
In men' s 800m 1 2-crew event, Indonesia was first, Myanmar second and Thailand third.
In the final of sepak takraw event, Myanmar was beaten by Thailand 2-1 and won silver.
Moe Thu Aung of Myanmar won bronze at 100 m butterfly event with 1:3.65 seconds. She set a new record, breaking her old record of 1:3.78 secs in Myanmar.
Joscelin of Singapore was first with 1:0.44 seconds and Praphalsai of
Thailand second.

(14) Official leaves for Indonesia
YANGON, 11 Aug- Director (National Museum) Daw Nu Mya Zan of Department of Cultural Institute left here for Indonesia by air to attend an ASEAN meeting on cultural heritage to be held from today to 13 August.
She was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General U Myint
Thein Swe of Department of Cultural Institute, Director Daw Nanda Hmon and
officials.

(15) Myanmar delegation leaves for Thailand
YANGON, 11 Aug - Altogether 52 members of Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association led by Joint-Secretary Daw Hla Wady and Executive Daw Khin Khin Swe left here by air this morning for Thailand to attend the Myanmar Trade Fair' 99 to be held from 12 to 15 August in Bangkok.
They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Chairperson Daw Sein
Sein, Vice-Chairperson Daw Thet Yi, Secretary Daw Nu Nu Yi and EC members and
officials.

(16) 37 members resign from Thegon Township NLD
YANGON, 11 Aug - Thirty-seven members resigned from the National League for
Democracy of Thegon Township, Bago Division Mission Office and the party
concerned on 27 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party
politics of NLD.
