(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Switzerland
YANGON, 1 Aug-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council of the Union of Myamar, has sent a message of
felicitations to Her Excellency Mrs Ruth Dreifuss, President of the Swiss
Confederation, on the occasion of the founding of the Swiss Confederation
which falls on 1 August 1999.

(2) Secretary 1 discusses academic and administrative matters of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University
YANGON, 31 July-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met officials of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University this morning. First, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported to the Secretary-1 on academic and administrative matters of the university.
Then, Pro-Rector Dr Hla Pe explained about the holding of mid-term examination, pass rates, excursions, conducting alms rounds and meditation practices, arrangements for second-term, research work on storing the stone inscriptions of the Fifth Synod of the Sangha in the CD-ROM, donations received and appointment of teaching and administrative staff.
The Secretary- 1 and party went to Thirimingala Kaba Aye Hill and inspected extension of Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi Phayasaung.
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party paid obeisance to Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Khamavuda.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented Waso robes to Bhaddanta Khamavuda. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then inspected construction of Convocation Dhammayon of State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon).

(3) Secretary-1 attends launching of Multimedia CD-ROM on Life of the Buddha
YANGON, 31 July- Launching ceremony of the Life of the Buddha Multimedia CD-ROM produced by Myanmar Inforithm Ltd. with the supervision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held at the International Business Centre this morning, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The Secretary-1 said during his inspection at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in March 1998 he learned that TriPitaka (Myanmar translation) was put in CD-ROM and a group of young men from Myanmar Inforithm Ltd tried to put illustrated Buddhology book created by artist U Ba Kyi in the CD-ROM.
He expressed satisfaction and recognition of the efforts, spirit and innovations of the group of young men. Myanmar children, youths and foreigners can study Buddhology in English, Chinese and Japanese, he added. The Secretary-1 spoke on endeavors based on information technology by-technicians, opening of multimedia classrooms in education, production of CD-ROM software, promotion and propagation of Theravada Buddhism through CD-ROM.
Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on work undertaken for Buddhology Multimedia CD-ROM.
Managing Director U Chit Tun Pe reported on CD-ROM arranged in Myanmar, English, Japanese and Chinese. He presented 625 CD-ROMs to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 63 to Higher Education Department, 562 to Basic Education Department and 100 to Young Men Buddhist Association (YMBA).
The CD-ROM was produced based on illustrated Buddhology book published by YMBA. The book was written by Amarapura Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Ashin in Janakabhivamsa and illustrated pictures were drawn by famous artist U Ba Kyi.
The CD-ROM includes the life of Buddha with 36 chapters and it contributes
toward promotion and propagation of the Theravada Buddhism.

Secretary 3 attend opening ceremony of Myanma Pineapple Juice Factory (Bago)
YANGON, 31 July - A ceremony to open Myanma Pineapple Juice
Factory (Bago) was held at the factory in Bago this morning, attended by
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and
Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General
Lt-Gen Win Myint.
Manager of the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd Daw Yi Yi Win acted
as master of ceremonies.

Hlaing explained about the Myanma Pineapple Juice Factory (Bago). Then,
Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint pressed the button to open Myanma Pineapple
Juice Factory (Bago). Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen
Win Myint, ministers and party inspected the factory.

(5) Bago Division Transplanting Competition held
YANGON, 31 July-The Bago Division Transplanting Competition was held at Pauktabin Farm in DaikU Township on 29 July morning.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Col Thaung Tin of No 77 LID, Managing Director U Than Tun of Myanma Agriculture Service, Deputy General Manager of Bago Division MAS Dr Thein Han, divisional, district and township level officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, agriculture groups which are carrying out land reclamation and agricultural works in Bago Division, Fire Brigade and Red Cross Brigade members.
The commander gave a speech on the occasion.
Then, the transplanting teams took part in the individual and team competitions.
Later, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and officials presented prizes to the
winner teams.

(6) Myanmar agriculture delegation leaves for Thailand
YANGON, 31 July- At the invitation of the Chairman of CP Group Co of Thailand, a 10-member Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung left here by air this morning to study agricultural works in Thailand for one week.
The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint, departmental heads, officials of the Royal Thai Embassy and families of the members of the delegation.
The delegation will study advanced cultivation and production of paddy,
maize, soya-bean and will discuss bilateral cooperation in projects with
the CP group Company.

Holdings Ltd holds first annual general meeting
YANGON, 31
July-The first annual general meeting of National Industrial Holdings Ltd
was held at the meeting hall of Ywama Steel Mill in Insein Township this
morning. Present on the occasion were Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn
Myint, Deputy Minister U Myint Thein Managing Director of No 3 Mining
Enterprise U Hsan Tun, Chairman of National Industrial Holdings Ltd U Htay
Myint, Executive Directors. the general manager, officials and
shareholders.
U Htay Myint presided over the meeting and General Manager U Tun Kyi acted as master of ceremonies. U Htay Myint then delivered a speech.
Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint said the mill run by Ministry of Industry- 1 and Ministry of Mines produced finished iron and steel products for construction. Production of the mill was handed down to private entrepreneurs with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe according to the market-oriented economic system for speedy development of the State's economy, he said. He urged the entrepreneurs to boost yearly production, extend production of new products and promote quality.
Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint then inspected the mill. U Win Thin and group 1998-99 financial statement for approval.
Executive Director U Aung Nyunt reported on share of profit to
shareholders. New Board of Directors was then elected.

for Organizing Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition
meets
YANGON, 31 July-The first meeting of the Leading Committee
for Organization the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts
Competition was held of the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street today
with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee member of the State
Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.
Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of the Leading
Committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and members, Chairman of
the Work Committee Commander of No 3 Military Region Col Win Maung and
members, chairmen of various subcommittee, chairmen of the hoards of
judges and doyen artistes.

Transport donate ‘soon', provisions to State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho
(Yangon)
YANGON, 31 July-A ceremony to offer soon and provisions
to 450 members of the Sangha of State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon)
by staff families of the Ministry of Transport was held at Mogok Soonsarkyaung
of the Tekkatho, this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe
and wife Daw San San Myint, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and wife,
Deputy Minister U Pe Than, directors-general managing directors of
departments and enterprises under the ministry and staff families. Rector
Sayadaw of the Tekkatho Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Panditabhivamsa
invested the congregationwith the Five Precepts.

(10) Minister inspects training of selected rowing teams
YANGON, 31 July-Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, accompanied by
Director-General Col Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education
Department and officials, inspected trials for selected Myanma women and
men rowing teams who are training for the XX South-East Asian Games, in
Innya Lake, this morning. In the trials, the athletes broke their previous
records. Then, the minister met selected rowers of women and men
teams and officials.

(12) Remnant armed group members exchange arms for peace
YANGON, 31 July-The remnant armed groups which realised correct aims and endeavors of the State and genuine goodwill of the Tatmadaw are exchanging arms for peace individually and in groups
Members of the armed groups who exchanged arms for peace in June 1999 were secretary of BCP (Rakhine) group U Raweinda (a) U Kyaw Hla Oo and in- change for NLD group of western area U Sanda (a) U Saw Maung in Western Command area, Pvt Maung Soe of Ya-La-La-Pha armed group, Pvt Kyaw Swa of Democratic Party for New Society and Pvt Kyaw Soe (a) Myat Soe of KNPP armed group with one M-22, four magazines and 1l00 rounds of ammunition in Eastern Command area, Pvt Kan Na of SURA armed group with one .30 carbine, one magazine and eight roundels of ammunition in Triangle Region Command area, Pvt Aung Kyaw Oo of No 2 Brigade and Pvt. Nyunt Shwe of No 8 Battalion of No 3 Brigade of KNU armed group with two AK-47s and one grenade in Southern Command area, Pvt. Hla Myint of BCP armed group with one rifle, one magazine and 59 rounds of ammunition, customs section in-charge Kyee Maung of No 11 Battalion and Pvt. Ja Pan (a) Pho Thada of No 10 Battalion of KNU armed group with one AK-47, one magazine and seven rounds of ammunition in Coastal Region Command area and Pvt Phone Myo of No 1 Brigade of KNU armed group with one BA-63, five magazines and seven rounds of ammunition in South-East Command area.
Officials of the respective military camps cordially welcomed the persons
who exchanged arms for peace in June 1999 and fulfilled their
requirements.

(13) 62 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD
YANGON, 31 July-Sixty-two members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division
Sixty-two members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their
own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon
Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party
concerned on 25 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in
party politics of NLD.
