(1) Secretary-3 attends to economic and social development in Kachin State
YANGON, 5 Aug Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint met members of Kachin State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, officials and members of social organizations yesterday afternoon in the town hall in Myitkyina, Kachin State.
The Secretary-3 expressed pleasure in seeing all-round development in Kachin State.
He said endeavors are being made with greater momentum for progress of the agricultural sector in all states and divisions in accord with the objective - development of agriculture as the base and all-round development of other sectors of the economy as well. Cultivation of paddy, beans, cotton, sugarcane, edible oil crops and kitchen crops are being extended to ensure sufficiency for local consumption and to export.
Monsoon paddy cultivation has been completed on 76 per cent of the-projected sown acreage in Kachin State.
Modern and developed nation cannot be built without the industrial development; various means are being applied in developing the agricultural sector and the industrial sector. Up to now 18 industrial zones have been set up in the nation for progress of State-owned and private industries.
The government is rendering financial and technical assistance to the industrial zones; priority has been given to production of import substitute goods and essential commodities for the nation and the people. The State sector and the private sector will jointly make efforts for the advancement of the industries.
Education promotion programmes are being launched in changing and developing the national education sector to meet the international standard. As the nation requires human resources skilled in science and technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology is opening technical institutes' region wise.
The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries have opened institutes in bringing out youths who are qualified in the respective sciences.
Efforts are required for harmonious progress of the economic and social sectors.

(2) Secretary-3 meets with officers, other ranks and families of Northern Command
YANGON, 5 Aug Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint met with families of units and battalions of Northern Command in he meeting hall of the command on 4 August afternoon.
Also present were Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, officers and other ranks and their families.
In his address, the Secretary-3 spoke of how the Tatmadaw has safeguarded the independence and the lives and property of the people and how the Tatmadaw is striving to serve the interest of the people and improvement of living conditions.
He also spoke of how the Tatmadaw needs to continue to preserve these fine traditions, how the Tatmadaw members need to live together with local national brethren amicably, how the Tatmadaw needs to contribute to efforts for boosting production and improvement of services while building a peaceful, modern and developed nation.
He also stressed the importance of doing welfare work and taking thrift measures.
Then, the Secretary-3 had a cordial meeting with families of units and battalions.

(3) Myanmar good-will delegation visits Thailand
YANGON, 5 Aug Myanmar good-will delegation led by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than arrived at Bangkok in Thailand on 1 August on goodwill visit at the invitation of Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Air Force Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan.
The goodwill delegation was welcomed in Bangkok by Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Air Force Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan, Chief of Staff Air Chief Marshal Mahintra Tiemtatsana, Joint-Chief of Staff (Operations) Air Marshal Thares Punsri, Director of Military Intelligence Air Vice Marshal Narongsak Sangapong, Director of Bureau of Operations Air Vice Marshal Nadpres Mandachitra and high-ranking officials, Ambassador of Myanmar to Thailand U Hla Maung and Military Attachι Lt-Col Kyaw Han.
Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and party, accompanied by Director of Bureau of Operations Air Vice Marshal Nadpres Mandachitra, paid homage to Emerald Buddha Image, and visited Golden Pagoda and Golden Palace Museum. Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than paid a courtesy call on Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army General Mongkon Ampornpisit at his office on 2 August.
Then, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than laid a flower basket at Memorial to Fallen Heroes of Royal Thai Air Force. Later, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than also met Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Air Force Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan and high-ranking officials of the Royal Thai Air Force. They discussed friendly relations between the two armies and exchanged souvenirs.
Then, Commander-in- Chief of Royal Thai Air Force Air Chief Marshal Tananit on of the training school.
Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and party went to Air Group No 4 in Takali.
Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and party viewed the flight simulator of Air Group and arrived back in Bangkok.

(4) Means sought to develop agriculture in Kayah State
YANGON, 5 Aug Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and members of agricultural coordination committee sought means to develop agriculture in Kayah State on 2 August in Loikaw, Kayah State.
An official presented cultivation and production of ;crops in the previous year and cultivation of crops this year.
The minister gave counsel on progress of agriculture in Kayah State. The director of Construction Unit 5 of Irrigation Department reported on the dam project, areas that will be irrigated by the feeder canals and inflow of water into the lake.
Built downstream the Hsinthe Reservoir, the diversion dam will irrigate over 30,000 acres through its two feeder canals. The diversion dam is 930 feet long and 20 feet high.
The minister and party then inspected progress in construction of No 1 Sugar Mill near Dahat village in Tatkon Township.
At the briefing hall, the minister heard a report on completed portions of the project.
During his meeting with sugarcane farmers, the minister discussed regional development undertakings.
On 3 August, the minister and party inspected the model sugarcane plots in the compound of the mill.
At the No 4 Sugar Mill Project (Taungzinaye) in Lewe Township, the minister heard a report on power supply and sugarcane cultivation.
During his inspection of the No 5 Sugar Mill Project in Myohla Township, the minister met with officials and farmers and discussed sugarcane purchase and transport and construction and running of the mill.
In Ottwin Township, Bago Division, he visited No 7 Sugar Mill.
The project director reported on sugarcane purchase, disbursement of loans to farmers and sugarcane cultivation and farmers on arrangements to exceed the cultivation target.
Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave instructions on cultivation of quality strains, raising of per acre yield, provision of fertilizers and farm equipment. and sugarcane purchase plans, explaining the government's endeavors for national development.

(5) Minister receives Ambassador, company officials
YANGON, 5 Aug Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than received Project Officer Mr Larry Wong of Bernas of Malaysia and party who called at his office this afternoon.
The minister also received Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat at 3 pm and Mr Chan Keng Hua of Tropical Oil Products Brokerage Pte Ltd of Singapore at 4pm.
They discussed cooperation on mutually beneficial basis.

(6) Workshops and refresher courses held for engineers
YANGON, 5 Aug The workshops for superintending engineers and assistant engineers, the refresher course for junior engineers (2) (civil), and the electrical refresher course for junior engineers (2) and (3) of Public Works under the Ministry of Construction concluded at the central training school (Thuwunna) of Public Works this afternoon.
On the occasion, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun made a speech. The minister said engineers need to be well-versed in engineering as well as to be skilled in management, and only then will the tasks be successful; it is necessary to pay special attention to quality and standard though efforts are made with momentum in order to complete the works in a short time.
He also stressed the importance of reading.
He added that the Government is making all-out efforts to be able to build a peaceful, modern and developed nation in so short a time; in this regard, the Ministry of Construction is undertaking construction works of the State; any tasks, big or small, need to be carried out as early as scheduled.
He also stressed the importance of systematic use of money, quality control and full use of machinery and human labour.
Afterwards, the minister had a cordial meeting with the trainees
Altogether 111 trainees attended the three-week courses.

(7) Micro Computer (PC) Hardware Engineering Course opened
YANGON, 5 Aug National Human Resources Development Department of the Ministry of Education opened Micro Computer (PC) Hardware Engineering Certificate Course No 1/99 in the Diamond Jubilee Hall this morning.
Minister for Education U Than Aung made an opening speech. Altogether 60 trainees are attending the course which will last six months up to 28 January 2000.
Arrangements are being made to upgrade the Micro Computer (PC) Hardware Engineering Certificate course to a diploma one.

(12) Special financial course of Ministry of PBANRDA ends
YANGON, 5 Aug Special Financial Rules Course No 9 of Central Training School of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs concluded at the training school in Dagon Myothit (North) this evening.
Brig-Gen Tin Aye and Col Thein Nyunt made speeches on the occasion. Then, Brig-Gen Tin Aye and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun presented certificates to trainees.
A total of 46 junior and senior officers of departments under the ministry attended the course which lasted four weeks.

(13) Myanmar sports contingent leaves for 20th SEA Games
YANGON, 5 Aug Myanmar sports contingent led by Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han left here for Brunei by air to take part in 20th SEA Games this morning.
The contingent includes traditional rowing, Thaing and boxing teams, judges and members of jury, security, medical, information and administrative teams.

(14) Seminar on development of industries of industrial zones continues
YANGON, 5 Aug The seminar on development of industries of the industrial Zones sponsored by Myanma Industrial, Development Committee (MIDC) continued for the fourth day today at the Ministry of Industry-2.
In the morning session, resource persons gave talks on situation of providing assistance to entrepreneurs, CN cutters, disbursement of loans in kyats to industries and patents on designs and inventions.
Officials also took part in the discussions.
In the afternoon session, papers on industrial laws, disbursement of loans in foreign currency to industries, computer aided manufacture and construction of local pulp factories were read.
The seminar continues tomorrow.

(16) Commander attends coord meeting of LRD officials of Ayeyawady Division
YANGON, 5 Aug A coordination meeting of division, district and township Land Records Department officers of Ayeyawady Division was held at Division Land Records Department in Pathein on 4 August with Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann in attendance.
Officials reported on organizational setup of Division LRD, personnel affairs and staff welfare. The commander gave instructions on extending cultivable land through reclamation of vacant and virgin lands, carrying out systematic tasks on lands and staff welfare work.
He attended to the needs after hearing the reports.

(17) Voters of Wundwin Township express no confidence in NLD representative-elect
YANGON, 5 Aug Over 59,205 eligible voters of Wundwin Township Constituency 2, Mandalay Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Hla Aung who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Wundwin Township Constituency 2 and no support for him at the rallies held at Phayasu Village, Pekhinkyaw Village and Thaphan Village in Wundwin Township on 22 July morning.
A total of 13,300 local people from these villages attended the rallies, and delegates of respective villages presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Hla Aung and no support for him signed by 59,205 eligible voters to members of the Township Multi party Democracy General Election Sub-commission.
Altogether 29,802 eligible voters or 51.31 per cent of Wundwin Township Constituency 2 of Mandalay Division voted for U Hla Aung of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.
The number of voters who presented signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Hla Aung and no support for him totaled 59,205 or 101.94 per cent.

(18) 32 members resign from Chauk Township NLD
YANGON, 5 Aug Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Chauk Township, Magway Division.
Thirty-two members of Chauk Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Chauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 6 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
