(1) Commander-in-Chief (Air) returns from Thailand

YANGON, 4 Aug – The Myanmar goodwill delegation led by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than arrived back here from Thailand this evening after visiting Thailand at the invitation of Commander-in Chief of Royal Thai Air Force Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan.

The Myanmar goodwill delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, senior Tatmadaw officers and officials.

(2) Kachin State to put 382,914 acres under monsoon paddy

YANGON, 4 Aug – Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint attended paddy transplanting contest which was held near Tatkon village, Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, this morning. The Secretary-3 and party heard a report on the agricultural sector of the state presented by an official.

They then cordially conversed with the transplanters. Afterwards the contest was held.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented the first prize to Monhyin Township team, consolation prizes to Myitkyina, Waingmaw and Mogaung teams and gifts to all the participating teams.

The Secretary-3 and party inspected the Bala Minhtin Bridge and urged officials to strive for its durability.

They paid obeisance to Myamyitzu Pagoda and presented cash donations to the pagoda board of trustees.

Kachin State has put 261,325 acres under monsoon paddy up to 3 August. Its monsoon paddy cultivation target is 382,914 acres. Another 53,996 acres of land will be put under monsoon paddy this year. It has produced sufficient paddy for local consumption in 1998-99.

(3) Marine Engineering (On-job) Training Course, Basic Work Proficiency Course end

YANGON, 4 Aug – Marine Engineering (On-job) Training Course No 1/99 and Basic Work Proficiency Course No 1/99 of the Inland Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport concluded this morning in the meeting hall of Dalla Shipyard.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said holding of such courses by IWT will contribute to the national human resources development.

Trainees who had completed the Marine Engineering (On-job) Training Course will be permitted to enter the MOT exam, he added.

Deputy Ministers U Pe Than and Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint also gave speeches.

Afterwards, the minister, the deputy ministers and party inspected office buildings and warehouses of Myanma Port Authority.

(4) U Linn Myaing appointed Ambassador to France

YANGON, 5 Aug – The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Linn Myaing as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of France.

(5) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation tours Shan State (South), Kayah State

YANGON, 4 Aug – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and officials inspected the work at the central agricultural farm in Heho on 1 August.

Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than and General Manager Dr Min Aung reported on objectives and works. The farm produces quality strains of paddy, crops, soy-bean and hybrid corn. The minister gave instruction on distribution of quality strains and the imparting of changing and improving techniques and cultivation of double crops.

The minister and party inspected plantations of buckwheat, orange and potato at the farm of MAS and tea leaf farm in Pinlaung.

The minister and party went to Moebye Dam where officials reported on water pumping system.

Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Myint Thein reported on progress on cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy, regional development and increase in areas of irrigated farms.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Chairman Brig-Gen Myint Thein inspected pumps at the canal of Mobye Dam near Dawkhamee Village in Dimawhso Township.

The minister inspected the site for construction of dam in Kwethawdaw region in Dimawhso Township and storage of water in Ngwetaung Dam.

(6) Minister visits Aungzeya Bridge Project

YANGON, 4 Aug – Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials, inspected Aungzeya Bridge Project in Insein Township this afternoon.

The minister and party went to the site on the bank of Hlinethaya Bank, and inspected concrete-laying work for Main Cable Tower No 2, arrangements to lay concrete for Main Cable Tower No 3, and construction work of the approach structure.

The minister gave instructions on timely completion of the bridge, work-site safety, meeting the set standard in construction of the towers and systematic storage of construction materials.

Afterwards, the minister and party went back to the site on the bank of Insein Township, and inspected concrete-laying work for Main Cable Tower No 2.

Aungzeya Bridge, 3,786 feet long, links Insein and Hlinethaya Townships and spans Hline River.

The bridge has a 16-metre motor-way and two 1.8-metre pedestrian lanes on either side, and can bear 60-ton loads.

(7) Seameo Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural Studies Technical Committee meets

YANGON, 4 Aug – The opening ceremony of Technical Committee's Meeting of Seameo Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural Studies be established in Myanmar was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Ministers for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, directors-general, chairmen, deputy directors-general, rectors, protectors principals and representatives of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Executive Director of Seameo Secretariat Dr Suparak Rachaintra, Assistant Secretary for Programmes, Projects and Regional Operations Dr Fe A Hidalgo and Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt made an opening addresses.

Then, the representatives of ASEAN countries took part in the discussions on Seameo Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural Studies. The first day meeting ended in the evening.

YANGON, 4 Aug – Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Managing Director of Daewoo Corporation of Republic of Korea Mr K S Oh and party who called at his office at 4 pm today. Also present at the call was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(9) NCCMC Chairman visits NC at YGH

YANGON, 4 Aug – Chairman of National Convention Convening Management Committee Brig-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by Secretary Lt-Col Win Naung and members and Joint Secretary of Health Subcommittee Lt-Col Kyi Lin, visited National Convention delegates U Mann Tin Aung Than and U Maung Maung U who were warded at Yangon General Hospital this morning.

Medical Superintendent Dr Teik Wan of YGH and officials welcomed them there.

Brig-Gen Tin Aye and officials asked after the health of the delegates.

(10) Minister meets Chairman of Myanmar Tractors & Trading Co

YANGON, 4 Aug – Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Chairman of Myanmar Tractors & Trading Co Ltd Mr A Mazumdar who called at his office at 10 am today.

(16) Minister for Cooperatives meets delegates Myanmar Trade Fair '99 Bangkok

YANGON, 4 Aug – Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San met delegates of cooperative societies and companies who will participate in Myanmar Trade Fair '99 Bangkok to he held in Bangkok, Thailand from 11 to 14 August.

Present on the occasion were Director-General of Cooperatives; Department U Maung Hti, Managing Director of Cooperatives Export and Import Enterprise Daw Khin Swe Soe, officials of Cottage Industries Department and 185 delegates.

The minister gave instructions on systematic arrangements on the fair and successful display and sale.

The Trade Fair was jointly organized by Cooperatives Department and TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd Nine cooperatives and 15 companies will put on display the products of gem, rattan, electrical goods, furniture, gold and silver tapestry, silk longyi, Thanakha and soft drinks.

Altogether 143 delegates from Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association, Association, Cooperatives societies and companies will also attended the fair.

(17) Work coordinated to organize photographic competition and exhibition

YANGON, 4 Aug – A work coordination meeting on organizing Monsoon Photograph Competition and Photograph Exhibition (1999) on Myanmar Scenes was held at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road this afternoon, attended by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

In his address, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung said the Ministry of Information and Myanmar Photographic Society are making arrangements to organize the photographic competition and exhibition, and after the silver jubilee, the term of the society has just turned the golden jubilee.

He added that at the golden jubilee of MPS, not only photographers from Myanmar but also those from ASEAN member nations will be invited to the competition; Monsoon Photograph Competition and Photograph Exhibition on Myanmar Scenes can be said an activity to hail the golden jubilee of MPS.

Then, a general round of discussions followed. Chairman of MPS U Thiha Thein Nyan reported on providing photographs needed for ministries and sale of photographic apparatus, films, cameras, video tapes, photo copiers, printers, digital camera at special discount by agents of Nikkon Camera, Fuji Film, Konica Film and Mitsubishi Film Companies.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister. The booths to be included in the exhibition are the central booth, the booth on activities of leaders of State, the booth on relations among ASEAN member nations, the booth on communal welfare activities, the booth on construction works throughout Myanmar, the booth on development of Myanmar, prize winning photographs and others.

The exhibition will be held in the Tatmadaw Convention Centre from 25 August to 5 September.

(18) Myanmar students delegation arrives back from Japan

YANGON, 4 Aug – Myanmar students delegation led by Supervisor Headmistress Daw Khin Khin Aye of Basic Education Middle School No 5 in Loikaw, Kayah State, arrived back here by air from Japan this evening after attending the 11th Get-together of Students and Youths from Asia and the Pacific held in Fukuoka, Japan 3 August.

They were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win and Deputy Director-General U Tun Hla, Deputy Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department U Tin Maung and officials and their relatives.

(19) Oxygen Concentrator for Tatmadaw medical unit

YANGON, 4 Aug – A ceremony to donate Oxygen Concentrator one unit for Tatmadaw medical unit was held at the office of Tatmadaw Medical Research and Development Committee this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare

Col Kyaw Myint, Deputy Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Lt-Col Khin Maung Htwe, Commandant of No 2 Military Hospital (500 -bed) Col Min Naing and officials.

Well-wisher President of Myanmar Daimex Co Ltd Mr Shunichi Takenaga presented Oxygen Concentrator one unit worth US $ 3,000 to Director Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han.

(20) Network/Internet System Development Course opened

YANGON, 4 Aug – Network/Internet System Development Course sponsored by Myanmar Computer Technicians Association and Centre of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) was opened at the office of MCTA in the compound of Institute of Computer Science and Technology this morning.

The deputy minister made an opening speech. Chairman of MCTA U Thein Oo explained matters related to the course. Altogether 20 trainees are attending the three-week course.

(21) 32 members resign from Chauk Township NLD

YANGON, 4 Aug – Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Chauk Township, Magway Division.

Thirty-two members of Chauk Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Chauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 6 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
