(1) Senior General Than Shwe met with the representatives of the 18 industrial zones of states and divisions
Senior General Than Shwe gives guidance on national industrial development Establishment of import substitute industries, industries primarily essential for nation laid down as major objective
YANGON, 2 Aug – Chairman of the State Peace and Development council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe met with the representatives of the 18 industrial zones of states and divisions, who are to attend the seminar on industrial development, in the hall of the Ministry of Defence this morning.
In his address, Senior General Than Swe said the purpose of meeting with the industrialists was to discuss the tasks to build infrastructure essential for building and industrialized nation, and encouraged them to coordinate the plans openly for industrial development at the seminar that would follow.
When they assumed the State duties in 1988, he said, the country's general conditions were deteriorating, and there were a great deal of tasks to be carried out in order to rebuild the nation. They had to try hard to pay salaries to the government employees, and there was little hard currency in stock, he said and added that they strove with various ways to overcome these situations.
For sufficiency of food r the people and to re-establish the nation, efforts were made for development of the agriculture sector, based on the actual resources and available investment, he said.
Encouragement was given and assistance provided to improve the agriculture sector to some extent, and since 1995, encouragement has been given for development of the industry sector, he said and noted that as an industrialized nation must be established for modernization, it should not be late to work for national industrial development and that based on agricultural development, other necessary industries must be established in succession.
He said national entrepreneurs and industrialists were thus allowed to establish industries and plans were laid down to improve the nation's industry sector through three-pillar system-the State sector, the private sector and the foreign investment.
As the local industries were scattered in various parts of the country, they were organized to establish at possible locations, and industrial zones were set up beginning 1995, he said and pointed out that only when entrepreneurs and industrialists gather at suitable places, will the government be able to provide support conveniently.
He cited the objectives for national industrial development:

industries primarily essential for the country, he said.
The Senior General said coordination and discussions are to be made, keeping in mind that the government, the people and the Tatmadaw are comrades discharging duties equally.
Next, the Senior General cordially met representatives of 18 industrial zones.
Senior General Than Shwe later inspected machine parts of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engines Industries, Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries and Myanma Machine Tools and Electrical Industries, parts produced by industrialists, transformers, lathes and industrial equipment, paddy threshers, Eya-1 tillers and tillers produced by Aung San Technical High School.

(2) Seminar on development of industries of industrial zones commences
YANGON, 2 Aug – Myanmar Industrial Development Committee held a seminar on development of industries of the industrial zones in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Industry-2 at 1.30 am today.
Patron of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the meeting.
It is necessary for all to take the guidance as working norms and carry out implementation work through cooperation and coordination.
The Government, the people and the Tatmadaw are to cooperate in striving for harmonious development of the agriculture sector, the industrial sector and the commercial sector.
As is known to all, measures are being taken for the development of agricultural forces with a view to making sure that the agricultural sector is making progress; coordination works are being carried out for individuals, the cooperative sector and private entrepreneurs.
Committees were formed and assigned duties to carry out coordination work among the sectors.
Myanma Industrial Development Committee was formed with the Minister for Science and Technology as chairman and Myanma Industrial Development Working Committee with the Minister for Industry-2 as chairman.
Nine subcommittees were formed and assigned duties and ministers were also assigned duties to supervise industrial zones.
The Secretary-2 urged all to boost production, to promote export, to increase production of import-substitute goods and to take thrifty measures.
He encouraged all to contribute to the discussions. Afterwards, Minister U Thaung made a speech.
Later, the representatives of industrial zones reported on conditions of their works, investment, labour, water and power supply, transport and communication and tax.
The ministers in charge of industrial zones fulfilled their requirements. The seminar will continue till 6 August.

(3) Secretary-2 inspects warehouse of MPA
YANGON, 2 Aug – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, arrived at the warehouse at No 5 Sule Wharf of Myanma Port Authority this evening.
The Secretary-2 was welcomed by Minister for Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Director-General of Fire Services Department U Myint Tun and officials.
The Secretary-2 inspected go at the warehouse and gave instructions on security and sanitation.

(4) Union of Myanmar and Republic of Azerbaijan establish diplomatic relations
YANGON, 3 Aug – The following is the Press Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Union of Myanmar and the Republic of Azerbaijan issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today:
The Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Republic of Azerbaijan, guided by the principles enunciated in the Charter of the United Nations and being desirous to establish relations of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation on the basis of the principles of equality, non-interference in the internal affairs of the others, respect for independence and territorial integrity, have established diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level on 3 August 1999.

(4) Minister meets Vice-President of China Textile Industrial Corporation
YANGON, 2 Aug – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Vice-President of China Textile Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic and Technical Corporation of the People's Republic of China Mr Chen Jing and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.
Also present at the call were officials of departments and enterprises under the Ministry.

YANGON, 2 Aug – Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met Resident Representative Mr Leon de Reidmatten of International Committee of the Red Cross who called at his office this evening.
Also present at the call were Director-General U Kyaw Tun of Prisons Department, Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun and Head of Office of the ministry U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(6) Minister inspects construction of Ahlon No 1 Wharf
YANGON, 2 Aug – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay and officials arrived at the site for construction of Ahlon No 1 Wharf this morning.
Managing Director U Thein Htay and Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World Port Management Co Ltd reported on progress of work of No 1 Wharf and arrangements for extension of the port.
Deputy Minister U Pe Than also reported on requirement for the port, environment, probability and others.
The minister and party inspected construction of No 1 Wharf. They also inspected the plot owned by Myanma Port Authority in the west of Thiri Mingala Market and the place where rice godowns and edible oil tanks are to be transferred.

(7) Education Exhibition on Narcotic Drugs
YANGON, 2 Aug – Educative Exhibition on Danger of Narcotic Drugs co-organized by Mayangon Township Union Solidarity and Development Association and Mayangon Township Anti-Drug Association opened at Youth Training Centre of Social Welfare Department today.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control USDA CEC member Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, USDA executives and officials.

(8) Coord meeting of Yangon Division Seventh Myanma Traditional cultural Performing Arts Competitions held
YANGON, 2 Aug – Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Leading Committee for Seventh Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions held first coordination meeting at the Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Office this afternoon.
Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Han Hsint gave an opening speech.
No 2 Military Region Commander Col Than Win reported on arrangements to be made for successful holding of the competitions.
Secretary of the committee Major Kyaw Naing Oo reported on ensuring success of Yangon Division in the competitions.
Then, Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint gave the concluding remarks.

(9) National Convention Convening Commission meets
YANGON, 2 Aug – National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today.
Present on the occasion were Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members.
Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting.
Next, National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on the National Convention matters. Members of the National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.
Afterwards, the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

YANGON, 2 Aug – Seminar on Infant Feeding and HIV jointly sponsored by Myanmar Medical Association (Central) and UNICEF will be conducted at Auditorium (A) of MMA, No 249, Theinbyu Street, Mingala Taungnyunt, on 4 August 1999. Those interested may attend it.

(11) Stimulant tablets seized in Tachilek
YANGON, 2 Aug – A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, waiting near Siwinhtaung Village, Mong-phone Village-tract in Tachilek Township, Shan State (East), stopped and searched a Hilux (3 Kha/1687) which left Tachilek on 21 July.
They arrested Sai Owun, driver, son of U Kyaing Nwe and Sai Yi, conductor, son of U Sai Hsan of Sansaing (Lower) Ward, Tachilek, together with WY brand 219,600 stimulant tablets, one 7.6 mm pistol, one hand-phone used in Thailand and 19,700 baht. Action is being taken against the two according to law.

(12) 42 members resign from Launglon Township NLD
YANGON, 2 August – Forty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Launglon Township, Taninthayi Division.
Forty-two members of Launglon Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own
volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Launglon Township
Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned
on 18 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of
NLD.
