(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia

YANGON, 29 July – Mr Nim Chantara, newly accredited Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9:30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Theta of the Protocol Department.

(2)  Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received President of Atlantic Teli-Tech Sdn-Bhd Company

YANGON, 29 July – Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received President of Atlantic Teli-Tech Sdn-Bhd Company and Ayer Molk Rubber Company Berhad of Malaysia Lt-Gen Raja Dato Abdul Rashid (Royal Malaysian Army) (R) and Senior Manager Mr Bob Hwang and Economic Adviser Mr Philip S C Low of Samsung Electronics of Republic of Korea who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Also present at the call were officials of the Government Office.

(3)  Thai Deputy Prime Minister arrives on goodwill visit

YANGON, 29 July – At the invitation of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Mr Bhichai Rattakul arrived here by air at 6:45 pm today on a goodwill visit to the Union of Myanmar.

The visiting Thai Deputy Prime Minister and delegation were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak and staff of Thai Embassy.

Then, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Mr Bhichai Rattakul and delegation together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left the airport for Inya Kantha State House.

The Thai Deputy Prime Minister was accompanied by senior officials of Thailand.

(4)  Secretary-1 meets staff of Fire Services Department

YANGON, 29 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with officials of the Fire Services Department in Ayethida Hall of FSD this afternoon.

The government has expressed its reliance on FSD by making arrangements to enable FSD to participate in Armed Forces Day parades together with other reserve forces of the nation such as Myanmar Police Force and Myanmar Red Cross Society.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged them to strive as the reserve force in maintaining the national peace and stability; to enhance the organization of auxiliary fire brigades in accord with the five principles and policies and seven tasks of the Fire Brigade in safeguarding the lives and property of the people; to strive to win the love of the people by safeguarding and maintaining the already achieved national peace and stability and progress and by rendering assistance to the people; to unitedly ward off all the dangers of destructive elements who want to destroy the nation and the Union together with other reserve forces for national peace and stability.

(5)  Cash assistance provided for in-service disabled Tatmadawmen for 37th time

YANGON, 29 July – The 37th ceremony to provide cash assistance to in-service disabled Tatmadawmen by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise and well-wishers was held at the City Hall this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Donations were presented to the disabled Tatmadaw men.

The Secretary-2 had a cordial meeting with the disabled Tatmadaw men.

U Tin Hla, son U Hla Aung and wife Daw Shwe Kyi and daughter Irene Tin Hla presented K 500,000 for the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement to Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

(6)  Secretary-2 inspects Soap Raw-material Factory

YANGON, 29 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the Soap Raw-material Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries on Bayintnaung Road in Hline Township a 5.30 pm today.

The Secretary-2 and party were welcomed at the factory by Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win also reported to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo on requirements of raw oil and soap and other raw materials, raw-materials available and condition of factory products, exceeding production target for 1998-99 and factory production for 1999-2000.

Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo spoke of the need to strive for boosting the factory's production more than the previous year and to co-ordinate with other departments to obtain raw-materials.

(7)  Minister meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 29 July – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Managing Director of China Shandong State Yan Tai San Ye Foodstuff Co of Chandong Province of People's Republic of China Mr Wang Zhang Xin and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Similarly, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Manager of China Textile Machinery (Group) Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China Mr Liu Ming Xiong who called at his office at 5 pm today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

(8)  Counterfeit US $ 100 notes seized at border check point of Maungtaw

YANGON, 29 July – A Bangladeshi was caught together with counterfeit US $ 100 notes at border check point No I in Maungtaw on 18 June.

The inspection group of the check point searched Mamed Hasan, aged 33, of Chittagong, Bangladesh, with a border pass, and found 90 counterfeit $ 100 notes hidden in his underwear.

The counterfeit notes were sent from U Nazin of Keitpatdipat Village, Chittagong, Bangladesh, to U Aduza Phalt, Ward-5, Maungtaw, to pay the bill for goods.

Action is being taken against him.

(10)  Voters of Ngazun Township express no confidence in NLD representative-elect

YANGON, 29 July – Over 33,837 eligible voters of Ngazun Township Constituency, Sagaing Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Cho Hlaing who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Ngazun Township Constituency and no support for him at the rallies held at Kala Village, Thakyin Village and Suppya Village and Natkyi Village, Yaylethaung Village, Nganmya Village and Magyi Village in Ngazun Township on 14 July morning.

Altogether 18,480 eligible voters or 60.15 per cent of Ngazun Township Constituency of Sagaing Division voted for U Cho Hlaing of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Cho Hlaing and no support for him totaled 33,837 or 110.13 per cent.
