(1)  Senior General Than Shwe's wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family offer 'soon' to members of Sangha on Sagaing Hill

YANGON, 28 July – Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, paid homage to pagodas in Mandalay yesterday evening. Accompanied by Daw Khin Cho Oo, wife of Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and officials, Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at Mandalay Hill at 6 pm yesterday.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party paid obeisance to Hsutaungpyi Pagoda on the hill.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing donated cash to the pagoda funds and signed in the visitor's book.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party also paid obeisance to Maha Thakya Marazein Kyauktawgyi Pagoda and Nanmyo Hsutaungpyi Pagoda and presented cash towards the pagoda fund.

Then, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family's offering of 'soon' to members of the Sangha was held at Hanthagiri Pariyatti Sarthintaik on the Hill at 10 am today.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party received the Nine Precepts from Chairman of Sagaing Division Sangha Nayaka Committee (Shwekyin) Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Hanthagiri Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Nandavamsa.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and families and party donated provisions to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandavamsa and 150 members of the Sangha.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party paid obeisance to Yadana Cedi Hsinmyashin Pagoda and donated cash towards the pagoda fund in Sagaing.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party made their trip by air, arriving back here this afternoon.

(2)  Secretary-1 inspects Kyaukkhwet-Letpando oil and gas production and development works in Magway Division

YANGON, 28 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party left Bagan-NyaungU by helicopter for Kyaukkhwet-Letpando oil and natural gas field in Pauk Township on 26 July.

The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Letpando Well No 1-A.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi and officials reported on geographical position of Kyaukkhwet-Letpando oil and natural gas field, drilling of Letpando Well No 1-A in 1974 and closure of the well, gushing of oil and natural gas out of the well up to 100 feet and future tasks.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to construction site of Mone Creek Reservoir Project in Sedoktara Township. They were welcomed by members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of Township USDA, Project Director U Myint Than, Project Manager U Mya Than and personnel.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Yaypokegyi region in Pwintbyu Township where fallow and virgin lands are being reclaimed by Dagon International Ltd. They were welcomed by Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of Township USDA, Chairman of Dagon International Ltd U Win Aung and officials.

In the evening, the Secretary-1 and party visited Shwezigon Pagoda in Bagan-NyaungU. They paid obeisance to Buddha image at Htilo Minlo Pagoda and inspected preservation of ancient cultural heritage.

They went to Dhammarajaka Pagoda and paid homage to Buddha image there. They spent the night in Bagan-NyaungU.

The Secretary-1 and party observed ancient cultural artefacts of 11th century AD and inspected renovation work at Pagoda No 820 and Pyatthatgyi Pagoda (Pagoda No 803).

Later, the Secretary-1, the Secretary-3 and party inspected Bagan Golf Course.

They arrived back here in the evening.

(3)  Athletes urged to compete fairly in sports events to the best of their ability

YANGON, 28 July – Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with athletes who will take part in XX SEA Games and handed over the flag representing the Union of Myanmar to leader of Myanmar sports contingent Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han at National Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna, this afternoon.

Later, the Secretary-1 had a cordial meeting with the athletes.

Myanma sports team comprising athletes, managers and coaches totaling 245 will take part in track and field events, billiards, snooker, bowling, boxing, soccer, golf, karatedo, rowing, sepak takraw, swimming, taekwondo and martial arts.

(4)  No 3 Basic Education Department offers 9,000 lights, 9,000 flowers and 9,000 fruits at Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 28 July – A ceremony to offer 9,000 lights, 9,000 flowers and 9,000 fruits donated by over 9,000 students of Basic Education State High Schools and Basic Education Middle Schools under the No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon) to Shwedagon Pagoda was held at Shwedagon Pagoda this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Patron of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid obeisance to Shwedagon Pagoda.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went up to the upper terrace of the Pagoda and paid obeisance to Hsutaungpyi Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Patron of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Ministers Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Maj-Gen Kyi Aung accepted the donations.

Later, the 9,000 lights, 9,000 flowers and 9,000 fruits offering ceremony sponsored by No 3 Basic Education Department was held on the platform of the Pagoda.

Altogether over 9,000 students and Dhamma Setkya Wut Associations of No 3 Basic Education Department received the Five Precepts.

Then, they offered the 9,000 lights, 9,000 flowers and 9,000 fruits to the Pagoda.

The students and Wut Association recited the Palidaw, followed by sharing of merits.

(5)  Secretary-1 meets Chairman of Atlantic Tele-Tech Sdn Bhd Co of Malaysia

YANGON, 28 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of Atlantic Tele-Tech Sdn Bhd Co Lt-Gen Mr Raia Abdul Rashid Bin Rajabadiozaman (Retired) and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Also present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(6)  Secretary-3, leader of Shan State (North) Special Region-2 discuss regional development in Wa region

YANGON, 28 July – Secretary 3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, accompanied by Commander of North East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and officials of the State Peace and Development Council and departments, left Lashio for Pansang on 26 July.

The Secretary-3 presented gifts sent by Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt to U Pauk Yu Chan.

The Secretary-3 and leader of Shan State (North) Special Region-2 U Pauk Yu Chan then posed for photo.

The Secretary-3 left for Nampaung Village in Lashio Township by helicopter.

He attended opening ceremony of library and submitting USDA membership applications in Nampaung Village.

The Secretary-3 went back to Mandalay and spent the night there.

(7)  Secretary-3 gives instructions on agricultural matters in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 28 July – Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint met with members of division, district and township agricultural supervisory committees of Mandalay Division and discussed agricultural matters in the meeting hall of the Central Command on 26 July evening.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint spoke of cultivation of paddy in Mandalay Division and water supply.

The chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils reported on cultivation and yield of paddy.

Then, the Secretary-3 urged district officials to carry out tours of inspection, provide supervision, attend to the requirements of township level and report on difficulties to the division level authorities.

(8)  National Workshop on Drug Strategies commences

YANGON, 28 July – National Workshop on Drug Strategies sponsored by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and UNDCP, began at the Hotel Equatorial this morning.

Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win. Residential Representative of UNDCP Mr G Le Hegarat and Project Coordinator of regional office of UNDCP in Bangkok Mr Brion Duncan made speeches.

Officials of CCDAC, Chief Justice's Office, Attorney-General's Office, the Customs Department and Myanmar Police Force are attending the workshop which will continue till 30 July.

(9)  Cash for 10 sewing machines donated to MMCWA

YANGON, 28 July – A ceremony to donate K 135,000 for 10 sewing machines to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) by Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and family members of the embassy staff was held at the meeting hall of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township at 10 am today.

Ambassador Mr Liang Dong presented cash to Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe who accepted the donation and presented a certificate of honour to the donor.

Afterwards, Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe thanked the Ambassador.

(10)  25 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 28 July – Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-five members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  Over 44,000 eligible voters of Tabayin submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Win Myint Aung

YANGON, 28 July – Over 44,072 eligible voters of Tabayin Township Constituency-2, Sagaing Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Win Myint Aung who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Dabayin Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held in Byankya Village-tract, Minswehnit Village-tract, Yinhtwe Village-tract, Kyakhat Village-tract, Ledi Village-tract and Kyi Village-tract, Waba Village-tract, Magyisauk Village-tract and Hsatpyakyin Village-tract in Dabayin Township on 12 July morning.

A total of 19,131 local people from these village-tracts attended the rallies, and delegates of respective village-tracts presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Win Myint Aung and no support for him signed by 44,072 eligible voters to members of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission.

Altogether 17,442 eligible voters or 47.75 per cent of Tabayin Township Constituency-2 of Sagaing Division voted for U Win Myint Aung of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. The number of voters who presented signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Win Myint Aung and no support for him totaled 44,072 or 120.65 per cent.
