(1)  Secretary-1 stresses aims in holding of Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions

YANGON, 24 July – A coordination meeting on organizing the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Museum this afternoon, attended by Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, senior military officers, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, departmental heads, members of the Leading Committee, the Work Committee and various subcommittees, chairmen of Myanmar Naing-Ngan Thabin, Music and Motion Picture Asiayons, doyen artistes and specially invited guests.

In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions are to be organized for the seventh time this year and noted that just as there were a lot of experiences in the previous competitions and that the objectives materialized to a certain extent.

One of the objectives of the competitions, he said, is for the youths to keep their morality upright, and efforts are accelerated year after year to put the youth on the right track with genuine cultural fine arts.

He noted that as a result, the government's aims set for organizing the performing arts-competitions have materialized year after year, and that the number of artistes with more brilliant skill has increased.

As the professional dancers were allowed to compete with live shows, without any play-back music, in the sixth competitions, Myanmar theatrical artistes could show their artistic talent to their heart's content, he said.

He also spoke about other accomplishments in the sixth competitions, and the success of the marionette skill competition of Widura Epic, the dramatic art event of nearly extinct Ramayana Epic and revival of Ramayana Epic theatrical troupes.

He urged the organizers, departmental officials and doyen artistes to present genuine Myanmar fine arts at the competitions reflecting pure culture and traditions and continued flourishing of Myanmar cultural fine arts.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than discussed the experiences and tasks in the sixth competitions, and Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Zaw Than reported on the formation of the Leading Committee, Work Committee and various subcommittees, and programmes for the competitions, followed by a general round of discussions.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered the concluding address.

Chairman of Myanmar Music Asiayon U Ohn Kyaw presented K 1 million, collected from the fund-raiser shows for the Seventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions, to the Secretary-1.

(2)  Secretary-1 attends ceremony to hand over donations for renovation of Kaylatha Hsandawshin Pagoda

YANGON, 24 July – The cash donation ceremony for the renovation of Kaylatha Hsandawshin Pagoda at the top of the Kaylatha Hill in Taungson in Bilin Township, Mon State, in conjunction with Waso robes offering ceremony was held at Karaweik Palace this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, deputy ministers, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, lay persons and well-wishers.

Then, Saya U Sein Lwin Lay explained about the emergence of Hsandawshin Pagodas and Buddhists missionary work of Kyaikhtisaung Sayadaw.

Well-wishers donated cash for the renovation of Kaylatha Hsandawshin Pagoda.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented Waso robes and alms to members of the Sangha.

Kyaikhtisaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pannadipa delivered a sermon.

After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party offered 'soon' to members of the Sangha.

(3)  Secretary-2 attends third graduation at Central Cooperative College, Yangon Cooperative Degree College (Regional College)

YANGON, 24 July – The third graduation of Central Cooperative College and Yangon Cooperative Degree College (Regional College) was held at the hall of the Institute of Nursing this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Cooperatives, the principals of Central Cooperative College and Yangon Cooperative Degree College (Regional College), faculty members, students and relatives.

Minister U Aung San said it is a day on which cooperatives colleges nurture and produce economists in accord with modem techniques and also an auspicious day of obtaining new generation youths capable of managing economic enterprises for the State.

He said Central Cooperatives College, Yangon, Mandalay and Sagaing Cooperative Colleges produced 1,321 diploma-holders and 187 certified accountants. Cooperative Colleges were established with the aim of producing economists.

The minister spoke on conducting diploma courses and accounting course and urged the graduates to make efforts to contribute towards market-oriented economic system while discharging duties in economic fields.

He said the government is now endeavouring for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation in harmony and urged them to serve duties at the respective roles with the application of the subjects they learned.

The minister then presented prizes to students of Central Cooperative College and Yangon Cooperative Degree College (Regional College).

Director-General of Cooperatives Department U Maung Hti and officials conferred diplomas on the students.

Altogether 138 graduates received Diplomas in Business Management, Banking, Finance and Insurance and Enterprise Development and 119 Diplomas in Business Accounting and Marketing Management.

(4)  New machinery sales office opened

YANGON, 24 July – A ceremony to open new office of UMW Machinery Limited & UMW Engineering Services Limited and Komatsu Asia & Pacific Pte Ltd (Yangon Office) was held at the office, 53/54, 9th mile, Pyay Road, this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, senior military officers, departmental heads, diplomatic corps, entrepreneurs and guests.

First, General Manager Mr Christopher D'Cruz of UMW Machinery Limited & UMW Engineering Services Limited extended greetings.

UMW Group Chairman Dato' Ramat Jamari and Chairman Mr Yuzo Suzuki of Komatsu Asia & Pacific Pte Ltd explained functions of their group and new office.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel made a speech.

Afterwards, Dato' Ramat Jamari and Mr Yuzo Suzuki presented souvenirs to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Minister Brig-Gen Abel.

Officials of the group made donations for National ASEAN Free Trade Area Unit and schools for the orphans of the Social Welfare Department. Then, officials of the UMW and the Komatsu Asia & Pacific Pte Ltd exchanged souvenirs.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel, Dato' Ramat Jamari and Mr Yuzo Suzuki opened the new office. They then inspected machinery and parts displayed at the office.

(5)  Ministry of Information holds Waso robes offering ceremony

YANGON, 24 July – The second Waso robes offering ceremony of the Ministry of Information was held at Dagon Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Eindawya Phaya Compound on Myomakyaung Road this morning, attended by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and wife Daw Khin Khin Lay.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and Daw Tip Tin Nwe, advisers to the ministry, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, directors, chief editors, staff families and guests.

Member of the Central Working Committee for the Sangha Padana Nayaka of Dagon Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Gunananda administered the Five Precepts.

Head of Office of the ministry U Khin Maung Myint read the list of robes and provisions.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Daw Khin Khin Lay, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and Daw Tin Tin Nwe and officials donated Waso robes and provisions to the Sayadaws.

Maha Visuddharon Shwek-yin Taikthit Sayadaw Tipitakadhara Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Afterwards, the congregation offered 'soon' to the Sayadaws.

(6)  Myanmar students delegation leaves for Japan

YANGON, 24 July – A Myanmar students delegation led by supervisor Headmistress Daw Khin Khin Aye of Basic Education High School No 5 in Loikaw, Kayah State, left here by air yesterday evening to attend the 11th Get-together of Students and Youths from Asia and the Pacific to be held in Fukuoka, Japan, from 21 July to 2 August.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Director-General U Bo Win of Education Planning and Training Department, Director-General U Tin Nyo of No 1 Basic Education Department, Director-General Col Thein Aung of No 3 BED, Chairman U Myint Han of Myanmar Education Research Bureau, officials and relatives.

(7)  Results of matriculation exam announced

YANGON, 25 July – The results of matriculation examination held in March 1999 were announced today (Sunday).

The results are posted at the respective examination centres and schools in States, Divisions and Townships.

The results for the entire nation are posted at No 1 Basic Education High School of Insein, No 1 BEHS of Yankin, No 3 BEHS of Kamayut, No 1 BEHS of Lanmadaw, No 6 BEHS of Botahtaung and No 1 BEHS of South Okkalapa.

The results for Yangon Division are posted at No 3 BEHS of Insein, No 3 BEHS of North Okkalapa, No 1 BEHS of Hline, No 1 BEHS of Mayangon, No 1 BEHS of Thingangyun, No 2 BEHS of Kyimyindine, No 1 BEHS of Thakayta, No 3 BEHS of Dagon Myothit (South), No 4 BEHS of Dagon Myothit (North) and No 1 BEHS of Mingala Taungnyunt.

(8)  34 members resign from Chauk Township NLD

YANGON, 24 July – Thirty-four members resigned from National League For Democracy of Chauk Township, Magway Division.

Thirty-four members of Chauk Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Chauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 6 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
