(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

YANGON, 21 July – Dr John Jenkins LVO, newly accredited Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(2) Mingaladon BEHS No-2 gets multimedia classrooms

YANGON, 21 July – A ceremony to open the multimedia classrooms of Basic Education High School No 2 of Mingaladon Township was held at the school this afternoon.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than attended the ceremony and formally opened the multimedia classrooms.

Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint formally opened the multimedia classrooms.

Then, they inspected the audio visual media room, the projection media room, the audio section, the reading room, the computer aided media room, the computer training and e-mail room and the domestic science and art room.

They also had a cordial meeting with the students.

Then, a ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia classrooms was held in the briefing hall of the school.

(3) Minister meets Ambassador of Philippines

YANGON, 21 July – Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met with Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady at his office this evening.

Also present at the call together with the minister were Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun and Head of Office of the Ministry of Home Affairs U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(4) Workshops of Ministry of Industry-2 inspected

YANGON, 21 July – Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin inspected spare parts manufactured by No 2 Motor Factory (Htonbo) on 19 July.

Managing Director of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries U Soe Thein and General Manager U Kyaw Myo Win reported on production of diesel engines for Mazda Jeeps and light trucks.

The minister inspected workshops at the factory and hostels for service personnel.

The minister and party went to No-1 Machine and Machine Tool Production Factory (Nyaungchehtauk) where General Manager U Pe Than Hlaing reported on production of machines, transformers and wires, measures undertaken in cooperation with industrialists of industrial zones, test running of new machines, repair of hostels for new service personnel.

The minister inspected workshops and presented gifts to Chinese experts working at the workshops.

Yesterday morning, the minister went to No-1 Farm Equipment Factory (Sinde). Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries U Than Tun and General Manager U Kyaw Kyaw reported on targets and implementation, supply of raw materials and parts, cooperation with industrialists, production of machinery and welfare for service personnel.

The minister then gave instructions. He also inspected assembly of parts of pumps and Eya-1 power tillers at the workshops.

(5) Minister for Commerce inspects rice mills in Maubin Township

YANGON, 21 July – Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, accompanied by Chairman of Wetlands-Farming Supervisory Committee U Soe Myint, arrived at wetland farms in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division yesterday afternoon.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Maubin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col J Han Shein and officials.

Nyaungdon Township Manager U Kyaw Thu of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading reported on cultivation of monsoon paddy.

The minister gave instructions on full cultivation, preparedness for natural disaster and cultivation of perennial crops and seasonal plants. He also inspected cultivation of paddy.

The minister and party inspected No 669 100-ton rice mill where factory manager U Hla Soe reported on storage and milling of paddy and export.

The minister reported on systematic storage, minimizing of wastage and loss in distribution and milling, maintenance of machines and arrangements for welfare of service personnel.

(6) Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Championship trophy weight-lifting contest began

YANGON, 21 July – Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Championship trophy weight-lifting contest began at the gymnasium in Aung San Stadium this morning.

Secretary General of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik gave a speech and declared the tourney open.

Seventy-four men and 57 women of nine teams from ministries, three teams from states and divisions and three club teams are taking part in the contest.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Director General of SPED Lt-Col Thein Aung, the vice-president, the secretary and executives of Myanmar Weight-lifting Federation, Leading Patron of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Daw Aye Aye Tint, officials, guests and others.

(7) Commander inspects agricultural work in Minhla Nattalin

YANGON, 21 July – Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye and departmental officials, arrived at agricultural education centre in Thayettaw Village in Minhla Township on 19 July.

The commander inspected pilot farms with the use of new technique, fertilizer and strain of paddy. He gave instructions on dissemination of agricultural techniques among farmers.

The commander went to Okpo Township and met members of Township and Village Tract Peace and Development Councils, the Township Education Officer, teachers, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and school board of trustees at Othegon Village Basic Education High School.

The commander inspected construction of new building for the school.

The commander and party proceeded to Ywathagon Village in Nattalin Township. The commander discussed extended cultivation of monsoon paddy, efforts for high yield of paddy, cultivation on fallow and vacant land, per acre yield and use of modern techniques in meeting with Township and Village Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA and farmers.

Officials and farmers reported on works and the commander fulfilled the requirements.

(8) IAA gifts for Cooperatives Ministry

YANGON, 21 July – International Academy Association (IAA) of the Republic of Korea presented two computers and three sets of language lab equipment to the Ministry of Cooperatives this afternoon.

Chairman of IAA Dr Joseph Y Baek explained the purpose of the donation.

He then handed the IBM computers and equipment to minister for Cooperatives U Aung San.

The minister spoke words of thanks.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department Col Sein Than, Adviser Dr Than Htaik, officials, members of the Korean association and guests.

(9) 55 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 21 July – Fifty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Fifty-five members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10) Students who will attend Get-together of Youths of Asia and Pacific Region tour Yangon

YANGON, 21 July – Myanmar student youths who will attend the 11th Get-together of Youths of Asia and Pacific Region which will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, toured Yangon today.

Accompanied by Headmistress of No-1 Basic Education High School of Kamayut Daw Myint Myint, Supervisor Daw Khin Khin Aye, Headmistress of No 5 Basic Education Middle School, Loikaw, teachers and officials, the students paid homage to Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayangon Township this morning.

The students are staying at BEHS-1, Kamayut.

They then visited the National Museum of Department of Cultural Institute, the Ministry of Culture, on Pyay Road.

Director Daw Aye Nu Mra San conducted them around the museum.

(11) Commander inspects regional development works

YANGON, 21 July – Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, together with Chairman of Katha District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Chit and departmental officials, inspected cultivation of monsoon paddy on 480 acres of fields with irrigation from Namaw Dam at Armagan Village, Wuntho Township, and cultivation of monsoon paddy cen 60 acres of fields at Myaylin Village, Pinlebu Township, Katha District, Sagaing Division, on 16 July.

The commander met with local farmers and attended to their requirements.

Afterwards the commander and party went to Pinlebu, and inspected the site chosen for the TV retransmission station, township posts and communications office, construction of the two-storey building of Pinlebu Basic Education High School, arrangements for the multi-media classroom and activities of the art association.

In the meeting hall of Township Peace and Development Council, the commander met with departmental officials and elaborated on regional development work.

The commander and party later inspected the construction of Pinlebu-Banmauk Motor Road.

On 17 July morning, the commander and party went to Kawlin.

In the meeting hall of Township Peace and Development Council, the commander met with departmental officials and towns-elders of Kawlin and Wuntho Townships.

The commander coordinated words for boosting of agricultural production and economic development.

Afterwards, the commander inspected completion of the monsoon paddy cultivation in Kyunkhon Village, Natkyigon Village-tract, Kawlin Township.

Then, the commander met with officials and farmers and attended to their requirements.

Later, the commander and party proceeded to Indaw.

In the meeting hall of Township Peace and Development Council, the commander met with township level departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade.

He elaborated on the prevailing political and economic situation, rules of conduct of government servants, implementation of projects and combination of technology and skill.

(12) Hospital equipment donated to DSGH

YANGON, 21 July – Up holding Our Three Main National Causes and honouring Tatmadaw members in the forward area, U Mya Than, Daw Thein Thein Oo and son Cadet of Defence Services Institute of Medicine Kyaw Myint Oo of No 776, Minyekyawswa Street, Pathein, presented hospital equipment worth K 150,000, U Thu Ta (a) U Be Dat and family of Shin Phyu Kyun Trading of 52 Street, Yangon, presented medicines for heart complaints worth K 50,000 and U Ohn Myaing and family of Kyaw Water Filter Sale Centre of No 10, 167 Street, Tamway Township presented two sets of water filter for Tatmadaw members being treated at the Defence Services General Hospital at 1 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Commandant of DSGH Col Tin Thein Lwin, Head of Department Col Daw Marlar Than and officials and donors. The donors explained about the donation and presented hospital equipment to the commandant and officials who accepted the donation and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

(13) Heroin, comethazine seized

YANGON, 21 July – A combined team comprising members of regional intelligence and member's of anti-drug squad of Myanmar Police Force, acting on the tip-off, searched the house of Win Maung, son of U Kyin Hwet, apartment No 510 Kha/3, sixth floor in Hninzi Street, Aungmingala Ward, Tamway Township on 27 June.

They seized 7.96 grams of heroin from Win Maung and his wife Ma Khin Myo Thet.

On 28 June, the combined team also seized 1.67 litres of comethazine from Muds, son of U Arkubinda, of No 5/9, Bogalayzay Road, Botahtaung Township
