(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Belgium

YANGON, 21 July – Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium, on the occasion of the National Day of Belgium which falls on 21 July 1999.

(2)  Efforts made for children, youths, women to enjoy rights fully, to become active forces benefiting nation; Secretary-1 meets staff of Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement

YANGON, 20 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with officials of Social Welfare Department and Relief and Resettlement Department this morning in the hall of No 4 Pre-primary School of SWD.

The Secretary-1 elaborated on the departments conducting of six child care centres, 41 day care centres and 20 pre-primary schools; provision of all-round assistance to 670 day care centres and pre-primary schools in all the States and Divisions; opening of 131 youth rehabilitation centres and 81 evening schools in the entire nation; and operating of eight girls' training schools, 127 parahita gehas, two schools for development of women, four women's vocational training schools, 30 homes for the aged and other centres such as rehabilitation centres for the disabled, training centres of the disabled, schools for the blind and deaf and other vocational training schools.

He said education campaigns, setting up of producers cooperative syndicates and youths rehabilitation centres are being opened to stop the practice of begging due to economic problems or cult which is a social problem that can have bad effects on the nation's dignity and weaken the nation-building forces. Eight drug rehabilitation centres were opened in states and divisions.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged staff of the ministry to strive to contribute with noble social welfare tasks for emergence of a new peaceful, modern and developed nation; to carry out social care and social development tasks in rendering assistance to continuous development of human resources, which are vital for national progress, and to strengthen the national forces; and to strive to ensure success in implementing programmes to build national forces which will ward off all the dangers of national traitors and elements destroying the race, who are obstructing the national development.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected academic matters at the No 4 re-primary School.

(3)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON, 20 July – On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Sonia C Brady who had completed her tour of duty at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call together with Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department.

(4)  Narcotic Drug Eradication Educative Exhibition opened in Tamway

YANGON, 20 July – The opening ceremony of Narcotic Drug Eradication Educative Exhibition organized by Tamway Township Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at Tamway Township USDA Office on Banyadala Road this morning.

USDA CEC members Col Tin Hlaing and Col Thaik Tun formally opened the exhibition and visited it.

A total of 450 trainees of USDA Executives' Management Course of the township, students of Basic Education High School Nos 1, 2 and 3 and people visited the exhibition.

Interested persons may visit the exhibition daily from 9.30 am to 4 pm till 22 July.

(5)  Donation for Renal Unit of DSGH

YANGON, 20 July – Upholding Our Three Main National Causes, Daw San Yon, wife of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, on behalf of Dr Kyaw Myint-Dr Khin Hla Myint and family of Staffordshire, Cannock of US, presented hospital equipment worth K 150,000 for Defence Services General Hospital this morning.

Daw San Yon, wife of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung explained the purpose of the donation and presented K 150,000 to Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han who accepted the donation and presented certificate of honour to Daw San Yon.

(6)  Four SURA members exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 20 July – The remnant armed groups which have realized correct aims and endeavours of the State and genuine goodwill of the Tatmadaw have been exchanging arms for peace individually and in groups.

Deputy section leader Nam Taw and Privates Aik San, Zaw Ti Ka and Ha Kyin (a) Kaw Na of No 759 Brigade of SURA armed group, bringing together with then three M-22s, four magazines and 136 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace at a Tatmadaw column in Nan-san Township on 9 July.

Officials of the Tatmadaw column welcomed them and attended to their needs.

(7)  Minister inspects railroad project

YANGON, 20 July – Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, together with officials, inspected the construction of Budalin-YeU-KhinU Railroad on 15 July.

Then, the minister inspected the construction of Pemyittaw Creek Bridge, and gave instructions on the works.

Afterwards, the minister visited Mu River Bridge Project and gave instructions on construction works and building of roads.

(8)  47 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 20 July – Forty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Forty-seven members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Social Welfare Department, Relief and Resettlement Department hold coord meeting

YANGON, 20 July – The Social Welfare Department and the Relief and Resettlement Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement held first six-monthly coordination meeting for 1999 at Pre-primary School No 4 this morning, with an address by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

Present on the occasion were Director-General Col Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department, Director-General Col Myint Tun of Fire Services Department, Deputy Director-General U Aung Soe, Acting Director-General Lt-Col Than Oo of Relief and Resettlement Department, advisers and officials.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone gave an opening speech.

Then, coordination meeting of respective departments were held.

(10)  Best ever Junior Championship organized by ABC

YANGON, 20 July – The following is the Press Release by Datuk Punch Gunalam, Vice-President of International Badminton Federation and Honorary Secretary General of Asian Badminton Confederation, upon the successful completion of the "Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship, 1999", here today.

The Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999 has been successfully completed. It has become the best ever Junior Championship organized by ABC to-date and has created many new records.

There were a record number of 24 countries and regions with more than 350 players and officials participated in the Championship. It also can boast of the biggest crowd ever in a junior event world-wide. It is also one of the best organized event and above all, the wonderful hospitality extended by the Myanmar people has made every participant very happy and take home pleasant memories of their stay at the Golden Land of Myanmar.

On behalf of ABC, I would like to express our sincere thanks to the Government of Myanmar, especially to the Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. His presence at the opening ceremony, during the Championship and at the prize presentation ceremony greatly motivated the players. It also is a great boost to the development of badminton in Myanmar.

Our thanks also goes to the Minister of Sports, Chairman of the Myanmar Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Organizing Committee Brig-Gen Sein Win for his tireless efforts in ensuring everything went according to the plan.

A special thanks to the Myanmar Badminton Federation and to its President U Kyi Nyunt for their effort in organizing such a successful event.

This year's event was one of the closest contested championship which speaks well for the rising standard of badminton in many Asian countries. I must take this opportunity to congratulate the Myanmar players for their performance which was much better than previous years and I wish them the very best of luck in the future to become one of the leading nations in Asia and the world.

(11)  Myanmar-Malaysia draw 1-1 in soccer friendly match

YANGON, 20 July – The second Myanmar-Malaysia friendly soccer match was held at Youth Training Centre in Thingangyun Township this evening.

Among the spectators were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Mohammad bin Noh and officials.

Myanmar and Malaysia drew 1-1 in soccer friendly match.

(12)  Public Works opens workshops and refresher courses for engineers

YANGON, 20 July – A ceremony to open a workshop for senior engineers, a workshop for assistant engineers, a refresher course for junior engineers-2 (civil) and a refresher course for junior engineers-2 and junior engineers-3 (electrical) was held at the Thuwunna Central Training School on this morning.

In his opening speech, the minister said the State Peace and Development Council is striving day and night to build the country to become a peaceful, modern and developed nation; the leaders of the State are also conducting tours of inspection right down to the grassroots level and providing close supervision with a view to ensuring success and effectiveness in carrying out works.

Then, the minister had a cordial meeting with the trainees.

A total of 119 trainees are attending the courses which will last three weeks.

After the ceremony, the minister, the deputy minister and party went to the building research office under Public Works.

They inspected the imported machinery.

Senior Engineer (Civil) U Tint Lwin reported on matters related to the machinery.

The minister gave instructions on maintenance works.

(13)  Donation for Yangon General Hospital

YANGON, 20 July – The donation ceremony to purchase Coulter Countery ACT 10 Haematology Analyzer valued at US $ 14,800 for Yangon General Hospital was held at the meeting hall of Health Department on Theinbyu Road this morning.

Managing Director Daw Amber Myo Thein of Lion Myanmar International Co Ltd explained the purpose of the donation.

Then, Daw Amber Myo Thein presented US $ 7,091.67 to Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department.

The director-general presented a certificate of honour and thanked the donor.
