(1)  Secretary-1 inspects construction of Ahlon No-1 Wharf

YANGON, 18 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the site for construction of Ahlon No-1 Wharf this afternoon.

Ministers Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Maj-Gen Kyaw Than reported on development of Ahlon No-1 Wharf.

The Secretary-1 then attended to the needs.

Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing reported on data of the projects and progress of work.

Ministers Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe gave supplementary reports.

The Secretary-1 then inspected the site.

The Secretary-1 and party went to No 5 Furniture Factory of Myanma Timber Enterprise in Hline Township where they were welcomed by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone and officials.

Minister U Aung Phone reported on location; and the area-of the factory, type of machines, production, staff and finished goods. The Secretary-1 and party observed the products of the factory. They were them conducted round the factory by officials.

The Secretary-1 proceeded to furniture factory of Yangon Wood Industries Ltd on Bayintnaung Road in Hline Township and they were welcomed by Managing Director Mr Marc Branthomme and officials.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the factory.

(2)  Ngamin Reservoir  inaugurated

YANGON, 18 July – A ceremony to inaugurate Ngamin Reservoir was held at the pandal near the reservoir in Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division, this morning, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said Ngamin Reservoir, capable of irrigating over 4,000 acres of fields, will contribute much to agricultural works of farmers and provide drinking water for Taungdwingyi; therefore, it is of great benefit not only to the State but also to the region, in other words, the emergence of Ngamin Reservoir plays an important role in efforts for agricultural development of Magway Division, so also does it serve as a firm foundation contributing towards improvement of living standard of local people.

(3)  Disabled members of Tatmadaw given monetary assistance

YANGON, 18 July – A ceremony to provide cash to disabled Tatmadaw members who are in service of No 88 LID was held at the city hall in Magway this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The Secretary-2 said cash has been provided to disabled Tatmadaw members from six commands and five LIDs and cash assistance of Directorate of Resettlement would also be provided to the remaining 1,526 disabled Tatmadaw members, adding well-wishers also provide cash to them.

He called for serving interest of the people at the respective roles and making their living on the cash assistance.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Brig-Gen Aye Kyway delivered speeches.

Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise under the Directorate of Resettlement presented K 1.5 million and 30 sets of crutch worth K 165,000, Magway Division Peace and Development Council K 300,000, Shwe Thanlwin Co K 500,000, Services International Co Ltd K 300,000 and Shwe Family Co, U Than Oo and sons K 100,000 each and NO 88 LID K 3.3 million.

The Secretary-2, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commander Brig-Gen Aye Kyway and Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Hla Myint presented account books to the disabled Tatmadaw members.

(4)  Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of Magway Division USDA Office

YANGON, 18 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the opening ceremony of a new office of Magway Division Union Solidarity and Development Association and inspected manufacture of farm machinery equipment and implements at No 2 Agricultural Machinery Industry (Malun) yesterday.

Together with ministers, deputy ministers and officials, the Secretary-2 left Yangon for Magway by Tatmadaw flight yesterday morning.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, who is a member of the panel of Patrons of the USDA, and party attended the opening ceremony of Magway Division USDA office.

(5)  Secretary-2 watches Myanmar-Malaysia friendly soccer match

YANGON, 18 July – Myanmar-Malaysia friendly soccer match was played at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

President of MFF Col Thaung Htaik and Manager of Malaysian team Dato Mohammad Shariff greeted the footballers.

In the match, Malaysia ten beat Myanmar team 2-1.

The second friendly match of Myanmar and Malaysia will be held on 20 July evening.

(6)  Myanmar Universal Bank branch opened in Kengtung

YANGON, 18 July – A ceremony to open Kengtung branch of Myanmar Universal Bank Ltd was held in Kengtung this morning.

Present on the occasion were member of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe, departmental officials and guests.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Chairman of the bank U Tin Sein formally opened the bank branch.

Then, they attended a ceremony to mark the opening of Kengtung Bank branch at new Kengtung Hotel. The commander and the chairman of the bank made speeches.

In the evening, the golf tournament was held to mark successful opening of the bank.

The Kengtung branch is the ninth of the bank limited. The MUB Ltd will open its branches in Sawbwagyigon (Highway Bus Terminal) of Yangon, Minbu and other states and divisions.

(7)  Minister tours townships in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 18 July – Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, accompanied by officials, inspected completion of Bo Myat Tun Bridge across Ayeyawady River in Nyaungdon, Ayeyawady Division, this morning.

In Danubyu, the minister paid obeisance to Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw to be hoisted on to Kyaikkalunbun Pagoda and gilded them.

The minister met members of Danubyu Township Peace and Development Council and departmental officials, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, executives of Danubyu and Pantanaw Township USDAs.

He gave necessary instructions.

In Zalun, the minister met officials and then paid obeisance to Zalun Pyidawpyan Pagoda.

(8)  Myanmar volleyball team leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 18 July – A 36-member Myanmar volleyball team led by Lt-Col Maung Ko of Defence Services Self-defence and Sports Institute left here by air this morning to take part in the XX South-East Asian Volleyball Tournament to be held in Sisaket, Thailand, from 20 to 25 July.

The team was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director (Competitions/Training) U Maung Win of Sports and Physical Education Department, officials of Myanmar Volleyball Federation and relatives.

(9)  32 members resign from Yamethin Township NLD

YANGON, 18 July – Thirty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-two members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 21 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Myittha Township

Similarly, 47 members of Myittha Township NLD, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 11 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Minister meets children of Tiger Parahita School

YANGON, 18 July – Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met 165 children of Tiger Parahita Training School for Development of National Races and staff in Hline Township this afternoon.

The minister explained to the children Our Three Main National Causes.

The minister and officials presented water bottles, cups, tooth paste and tooth brush donated by Singapore Shwe Kyaung Sayadaw to the children.

The minister also met officials of Education and Training Department and members of School Supervisory Committee and gave instructions.

(11)  Fukuoka-bound students tour Yangon

YANGON, 18 July – A Myanmar students delegation which will attend the 11th Get-together of Students and Youth from Asia and the Pacific in Fukuoka, Japan, accompanied by Headmistress of Basic Education Middle School No 5 of Loikaw, Kayah Stale, Daw Khin Khin Aye and teachers, arrived at Memorial to Fallen Heroes this morning.

The delegation was welcomed there by Commandant of Defence Services Record Office Commander of No 4 Military Region Chairman of Memorial to Fallen Heroes Maintenance Committee Col Myo Myint and officials.

They saw change of the guard platoons.

An official explained facts about the Memorial to Fallen Heroes.

The students laid the flower basket in tribute of the fallen heroes.

They then paid obeisance to Shwedagon Pagoda and made donations there.

The delegation visited the National Museum and Planetarium.

In the afternoon, the students visited the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

(12)  Donations for Hninhzigon Home for the Aged, old actresses

YANGON, 18 July – A ceremony to donate cash from the sales of video tape titled "Pahtama Nameik" to Hninhzigon Home for the Aged and group of old actresses by film director and film star Academy U Kyaw Hein was held at the hall of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of MMPA U Sein Tin, Secretary of Board of Trustees of the Home for the Aged U Aung Than, officials, actors and actresses and guests.

Chairman U Sein Tin gave a speech.

Academy U Kyaw Hein explained the purpose of the donation. Then, Academy U Kyaw Hein and family and movies stars presented K 900,000 each to the group of old actresses and the home for the aged.

Officials accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to well-wishers.

(13)  Lucky dip programme for Goodknight mosquito coil

YANGON, 18 July – A lucky dip programme of Goodknight mosquito coil sponsored by Godrej Hi Care Ltd, Myanmar Agrocorp Co Ltd and Pahtama Group Co Ltd was held at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel this morning.

It was attended by sale agents and guests.

Country Manager of Myanmar Agrocorp Co Ltd Mr K Subaramanian (a) Suresh and General Manager of Pahtarna Group Co Ltd Dr San San Yi made dips and presented prizes to the winners.

(14)  First Inter-State/Division Under-17 Basketball Tournament ends

YANGON, 18 July – The prize presentation ceremony of the First Inter-State/Division Under-17 Basketball Tournament was held at Aung San Gymnasium this morning.

Present on the occasion were Director-General Col Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education Department, officials, President of Myanmar Basketball Federation Professor Dr Sein Myint, guests and spectators.

Director-General Col Thaung Htaik presented best player awards to Yu Mon Thaw of Sagaing Division in women's event and Soe Lin Aung of Mandalay Division in men's event. He then presented championship shields to Sagaing Division team in women's event and Mandalay Division in men's event.
