(1)  USDA's International Relations Course No 4 and Executives' Management Course No 19 were opened

YANGON, 16 July – Union Solidarity and Development Association's International Relations Course No 4 and Executives' Management Course No 19 were opened at Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby Township, Yangon Division, at 9 am today.

Patron of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance.

Association members attending the course have come from various parts of the country and they will be able to exchange experiences among them. So, the second point I would like to urge you is to exchange experiences and views and cooperate based on comradeship and good-will.

After the ceremony, the Senior General cordially met the trainees.

He had lunch together with the trainees in the Bayintnaung Hall.

(2)  The Special Refresher Course 2 for Judicial Officers opened

YANGON, 16 July – The Special Refresher Course 2 for Judicial Officers as opened at the Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, today with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the trainees to exchange their views and attend the course with the aim of standing as reliable judicial officers, apply what they learn from the course for proper administration of justice, discharge their duties with good-will and in accord with the law, study with the aim of having knowledge on the government's aims for proper administration of justice and strive for prevalence of law and order.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends dinner in commemoration of Birthday of His Majesty of Brunei Darussalam

YANGON, 16 July – A dinner in commemoration of the Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam was held at the Inya Lake Hotel this evening.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, ministers and their wives, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and wife, departmental heads, ambassadors and their wives and guests.

Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam Pengian Dato Paduka Asmalee Ahmad and wife welcomed them and hosted dinner in commemoration of the Birthday of the His Majesty of Brunei Darussalam.

(4)  Secretary-2 attends coord meeting on extensive use of briquettes

YANGON, 16 July – A coordination meeting on extensive use of briquettes was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Mines this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on ensuring smooth purchase of coal and raw materials and educating the people about the briquette.

After the meeting, the Secretary-2 observed use of coal briquette manufactured by Hashimoto Sangyo Co Ltd of Japan.

(5)  Well-wishers donate 200 bags of rice, 1,000 viss of edible oil to WVO Vocational Education Training School

YANGON, 16 July – A ceremony to donate 200 bags of rice and 1,000 viss of edible oil worth K 1.2 million for trainees of war veterans who are pursuing the courses at vocational education training schools and members of Myanmar War Veterans' Organization by Shwe Than Lwin Company was held at the vocational education training school of the WVO Headquarters in Aungsan Singu Ward of Insein Township this evening.

Members of WVO COC Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung gave an opening speech.

Then, Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Daw Ni and Chairman of the company U Kyaw Win presented 200 bags of rice and 1,000 viss of edible oil.

On behalf of the Chairman of Myanmar War Veterans' Central Organizational Committee, Minister U Thaung accepted the donations and presented certificates to the well-wishers. The minister also spoke words of thanks.

Afterwards, the minister and officials visited practical courses of the trainees in the school.

(6)  Tailoring and cookery courses held by MMCWA

YANGON, 16 July – The concluding ceremony of Tailoring Course No-5/99 and Cookery Course No-4/99 and the opening ceremony of Tailoring Course No-6/99 and Cookery Course No-5/99 sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association were held at the MMCWA Multi-purpose Building at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township at 9 am today.

The opening ceremony of and Cookery and Tailoring courses was held at the building.

Thirty-five trainees are attending the tailoring course and 25 in the cookery course.

Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and patrons and CEC members presented toys donated by the Golden Pagoda Buddhist Temple Sayadaw of Singapore to children of Children Development Centre opened by MMCWA.

With regard to the recent statement by Lee Teng-hui on the cross-Straits relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued the following Press Release.

The Union of Myanmar was one of the first countries which recognized the People's Republic of China when it was founded on 1st October 1949. Since then, Myanmar and China have been able to establish kinsfolk-like pauk-phaw friendship based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. As a close friend of China, Myanmar reiterates its full support to China's efforts to safeguard its sovereignty, dignity and territorial integrity.

Moreover, Myanmar consistently abides by the "One China Policy" and recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China.

(8)  36 members resign from Shwedaung Township NLD

YANGON, 16 July – Thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwedaung Township, Bago Division.

Seven members of Shewdaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 16 June 1999 and twenty-nine members followed suit on 9 July 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
