(1)  Road links primary need for regional progress, uplift of socio-economic life of the people Yaw Creek Bridge on Yangon Sittway Highway commissioned into service in Myebon Township

YANGON, 14 July – Yaw Creek Bridge on Yangon-Sittway Highway in Myebon Township, Rakhine State, was commissioned into service this morning at the pandal near the bridge.

Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

In his address, the Secretary-1 expressed pleasure for the emergence of one more bridge that will bring significant benefits to the national brethren of Rakhine State as the Yaw Creek Bridge was opened today; and the bridge is included in the projects the government has given priority for progress of Rakhine State.

The project . includes building of 10 major bridges and 800 minor bridges; and Yaw Creek Bridge is included in the major bridges.

The bridge is a main link on-Yangon-Sittway Highway and will ensure easy access to major towns of other States and Divisions from Minbya through Minbu in Magway Division.

The 1,100 feet long bailey-typed bridge with steel frames was built at a cost of US $ 0.5 million and K 580 million.

In addition to Yaw Creek Bridge, other large bridges such as Min Creek Bridge and Kissapanadi Bridge, which are over 2,000 feet long, 1,300-foot Ramong Bridge, 900-foot Dalet Creek Bridge and Maei Creek Bridge have been built or are being built in Rakhine State.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented gifts to the project engineer.

Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge.

Maj-Gen Saw Tun unveiled the plaque making the opening of the bridge.

The bridge is 1,100 feet long and 10 feet and nine inches wide. It can withstand up to 20-ton loads.

(2)  Secretary-1 attends opening of multimedia classrooms, inspects preservation of ancient cultural heritage in Rakhine State

YANGON, 14 July – Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected opening ceremonies of multimedia classrooms at basic education high schools in Sittway and preservation of ancient cultural heritage in MraukU, Rakhine State, yesterday.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Commander of Danyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Myat Swe, Deputy Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen Aung Thein, military officers and civilian officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and families.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended opening ceremonies of multimedia classrooms at respective basic education high schools in Sittway Rakhine State.

The Secretary-1 and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, went to Basic Education High School No I in Sittway.

They were welcomed there by officials of No-1 BED, members of SBT and PTA, headmistress Daw Aye Aye Mu, teaching staff and students.

Headmistress Daw Aye Aye Mu and Chairman of SBT U Hla Tun formally opened the multimedia classroom of the school.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer aided instruction room, the computer application room, the audio visual media room, the audio system media room and the painting room and the domestic science room.

The ceremony to mark the opening of multimedia classrooms of BEHSs No 1, 4 and 6 was held in Bandoola Hall of Sittway Station.

The Secretary-1 attended the ceremony and delivered an address.

Chairman of SBT of BEHS No 4 U Saw Phyu made a speech.

Then, the Secretary-1 said it is encouraging to see the multimedia classrooms of the schools and the progress of teaching and learning skill of the teachers and the students.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects progress in construction of Hline River Bridge (Myochaung)

YANGON, 14 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) linking Hmawby and Htantabin Townships and cultivation activities at Central Paddy Model Farm in Hmawby this morning.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of Yaydwingon-Myochaung Road and proceeded to the construction site of Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) which included Bawlekyun Bridges Construction Project.

Project Director U San Nyein reported on progress of work. The Secretary-2 attended to the requirements.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of bridge on the banks in Htantabin and Hmawby Townships. The Secretary-2 met officials and workers.

The reinforced concrete bridge is to be 1,940 feet long and 24 feet wide and it includes five feet wide walkways on each side.

Yangon Division Forest Department will grow 9,000 plants of teak, maizali, pyinma, ma-u and hsithabye.

The Secretary-2 and party met officials of Yangon North District and Hmawby Township and explained health, education, regional development and cultivation matters.

The Secretary-2 and party went to Hmawby Central Paddy Model Farm where Director-General of Agricultural Planning Department Dr Mya Maung reported on cultivation of paddy and beans and pulses.

The Secretary-2 inspected pilot cultivation of CN-1, a strain of paddy from abroad and Pawhsanhmwe, Lonethwehmew and Manawthukha on 0.4 acre of land.

Officials of the farm reported on making of E M Bokashi.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on the use of E M Bokashi and making efforts for wide application of cultivation techniques among farmers.

(4)  Secretary-2 attends technical presentation on basic wireless telephone services

YANGON, 14 July – Technical presentation on Basic Wireless Telephone Services of Hutchinson Telecom International was held at International Business Centre this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, guests, officials of Hutchinson Telecom International.

Technical Director Mr Mike Cavill made a speech.

Project Manager Mr Stanley Ba Oh reported on wireless telephone services and telephoning with the use of Combo system.

The Secretary-2 and party made trial calls with the wireless telephones.

Officials replied queries of those present.

(5)  Deputy Prime Minister receives MD of Chiyoda Corporation

YANGON, 14 July – Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of Chiyoda Corporation of Japan Mr Naotake Naritomi and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call ware Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials and officials of Ministry of Construction.

They discussed situation of mutual cooperation between Chiyoda Corporation and Public Works in copper exploration of Ivanhoe Myanmar Holdings Ltd and investment opportunities on development of infrastructure.

(6)  Test production of natural fertilizer inspected

YANGON, 14 July – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung and officials, inspected test production of natural fertilizer at Nwekhwe Warehouse of Myanmar Agriculture Service in Mingaladon Township this afternoon.

MAS Managing Director U Tun Than and officials reported to the minister on the production of natural fertilizer from humus.

It can be used in cultivation of various crops.

(7)  Minister inspects IWT passenger ship, waterways

YANGON, 14 July – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected a passenger ship of Inland Water transport berthed at Monywa Port yesterday morning.

The minister also inspected vessels at the port and sale of tickets to travelers there.

In Myinmu, he inspected Myinmu Port and running of vessels and waterways along the Ayeyawady between Myinmu and Myingyan.

He then proceeded to Pakokku where he inspected waterways at the entrance to Pakokku, maintaining of banks of the river near Shwemudaw Pagoda and formation of sand banks.

The minister gave instructions on ensuring smooth waterways in summer and then inspected measures being taken to prevent erosion of banks at Lawkananda Pagoda in Bagan.

(8)  Minister for Industry-1 meets foreign company officials

YANGON, 14 July – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Managing Director Mr Christoph Hoene of Arab Malaysian SGB Sdn Bhd and party at his office at 4.45 pm, the President of N R Industries Co Ltd and Thai Machine Product Co Ltd of Thailand and party at 5.15 pm and President M Yang Mingxian of Yunnan Bank of China and party at 5.45 pm.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and heads of departments under the ministry.

(9)  38 members resign from Yenangyoung Township NLD

YANGON, 14 July – Thirty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yenangyoung Township, Magway Division.

Thirty-eight members of Yenangyoung Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yenangyoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 16 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 14 July – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe met Senior General Manager of Airod Co of Malaysia Col (R) A Hamid Abdullah and party who called at his office at 3.30 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, General Manager U Phone Maung and Chief Engineer U Yan Pyay of Myanma Airways.

(11)  Minister U Win Aung leaves for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh

YANGON, 14 July – At the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left here by air this evening to pay goodwill visits to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Minister U Win Aung was seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Bangladesh Ambassador Mr Jahangir Saadat, Charge d'Affaires ai of the Sri Lankan Embassy Mrs WAT Gunatillake and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

(12)  Myanmar musical concert staged in London

YANGON, 14 July – A Myanmar musical concert jointly organized by Myanmar Association (UK) and Myanmar Embassy in London took place at Acton Town Hall, London, at noon on 4 July.

Myanmar families in Britain enjoyed it.

Patron of Myanmar Association (UK) Myanmar Ambassador to UK Dr Kyaw Win and Chairman U Maung Maung Hein extended greetings to the audience.

Together with Myanmar vocalists Sandaya Tin Win Hlaing, Than Myat Soe, Sai Hti Hsaing, Mi Mi Win Pe, Kabya Bwehmu and Kyaw Naing, film actress Myo Thanda Tun entertained the audience with songs and dances.

Before the concert, Myanmar traditional food items were sold to the audience.

The concert came to an end with a song "Myanmar Association (UK)" sung by the artistes and the audience including Myanmar families and their friends.

(13)  Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Fund Supervisory Committee meets

YANGON, 14 July – Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Fund Supervisory Committee held its meeting at the Ministry of Information on Bo Aung Kyaw Street this morning.

The meeting was also attended by Chairman of Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Fund Supervisory Committee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and members and officials of the Ministry of Information and Ministry of Education.

Chairman Brig-Gen Aung Thein spoke on the occasion.

Literary award presentation will be held in Pakokku this year.

Secretary of the committee Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun reported on work done on resolutions of the previous meeting.

Deputy General Manager (Accounts) of Printing and Publishing Enterprise U Myint Tun reported on finance, Adviser U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) on scrutiny of the entries.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.
