(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of the Republic of France
YANGON, 12 July – Mr Andre Marie Bernard Amaudric du Chaffaut, newly accredited Ambassador of the Republic of France to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9:30 am today.
Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(2) Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in Chief of Defence Services, Commander in Chief (Army) General Maung Aye receives Military Attache of Malaysia
YANGON, 12 July – Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attache of Malaysia Lt-Col Marzuki Mohd Rusli Bin Ahmad, who had completed his tour of duty, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today.
Also present on the occasion together with the General were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than.

(3) Myanmar taking active part in ASEAN activities ASEAN Steering Committee holds meeting
YANGON, 12 July – Meeting No-2/99 of ASEAN Steering Committee was held in the meeting hall of Commander-in-Chief (Army) of the Ministry of Defence this evening, attended by Chairman of ASEAN Steering committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Then, Minister U Win Aung reported on matters related to 32nd meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers and other related meetings, the ASEAN news bulletin and the meetings which officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended.
Afterwards, Minister Brig-Gen Abel reported on ASEAN economic cooperation and meetings.
Then, ministers, the auditor-general and deputy ministers reported on ASEAN meetings which officials of the respective departments attended.
Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun also reported on energy matters related to ASEAN.
Later, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win reported on appointment of staff at the ASEAN Secretariat.
Deputy Minister U Tin Tun then reported on formation of a national committee on cooperation in the energy sector with BIMST-EC.
In his address, the Secretary-l said after becoming a member of ASEAN, Myanmar is actively participating and cooperating in activities of ASEAN.
Therefore, not long after becoming an ASEAN member, Myanmar is actively attending the ASEAN meetings; so also did it manage to host ministerial meetings, senior officers meetings and ASEAN meetings of NGOs.
As Myanmar managed to host ASEAN meetings, the international community can know the objective condition of Myanmar through those who attended such meetings, and it accentuates Myanmar's skillful performance of hosting international-level meetings.
Furthermore, intellectuals and intelligentsia of Myanmar could acquire knowledge and experience of international-level meetings.
In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all to cooperate with respective ministries with a view to enabling Myanmar to speed up the momentum of active participation in the ASEAN and to actively take part in ministerial and senior officers meetings as well as ASEAN summit to be held soon.

(4) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation inspects progress on irrigation projects
YANGON, 12 July – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected construction of Nyaunggaing Dam near Okpo Ywathit in Padaung Township, Bago Division, yesterday.
Together with departmental officials, he inspected construction of the spillway, regulation tower and inflow and gave suggestions on construction works, expansion of cultivation acreage and double cropping.
The dam is 3,700 feet long and 57 feet high, with a storage capacity of 17,500 acre-feet to irrigate 3,000 acres.
Completion of the dam has changed the old type of irrigation system enabling farmers to irrigate crops all the year round. The four embankments built in Kyauksegyi, Kathe, Yayway and Wa in 1961 could store water if there was rainfall.
The minister and party later inspected Weigyi Dam being built near Phaung-ai Village in Paungde Township and heard reports on progress of work presented by officials of Irrigation Department Construction Division 2.
In his meeting with members of Bago Division Agriculture Coordination Committee, district and township organizations and construction workers, the minister urged them to strive for multiple cropping and development of the agriculture sector in their townships.
Weigyi Dam lies between South Nawin Dam and Taungnyo Dam. With a storage capacity of 252,000 acre-feet, it will irrigate crops on the continuous stretches of fields.
Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and party later inspected Okkan Sugar Mill construction project in Taikkyi Township.

(5) IPRD holds coordination meeting for 1999
YANGON, 12 July – The Information and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Information held its coordination meeting for 1999 at the training hall of the News and Periodicals Enterprise on Pansodan Street today.
Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered an address and presented honorary medals.
In his address, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung pointed out the tasks for District IPRD officers and urged them to cooperate with other departments in the tasks for human resource development.
He stressed the need for IPRD officers to be well-qualified for the tasks and told them to pay serious attention to the library services.
He said new generations need to possess higher morale and concepts in order to keep abreast of the times and organize people to read and learn, and participate in the nation-building tasks.
He pointed out the four primary tasks of the IPRD and spoke of the need to inform the people of the government's policies, national objectives and guidelines and join in the border areas and national development projects.
Afterwards, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented honorary medals to the officials and personnel.
The meeting continues tomorrow.

(6) Chief of Armed Forces Training receives delegation of Singapore National Defence College
YANGON, 12 July – Chief of Armed Forces Training of Defence Services Maj-Gen Win Myint received a 98-member delegation led by Col Lim Kah Kee of Singapore National Defence College at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 2.30 pm today.
The Singapore delegation led by Col Lim Kah Kee of Singapore National Defence College arrived here by air at 11.30 am today.
They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Colonel General Staff (Air) (Mechanical) Col Hlaing Bwa, Assistant Chief of Armed Forces Training (Navy) Captain Htein Win, Deputy Director of Military Training Col. Than Myint, General Staff Officer Grade-I Lt-Col Phone Myint Shwe of Office of the Chief of Armed Forces Training, senior military officers and officials of the Singapore Embassy.
In the evening, the Singapore delegation called on Commandant Maj-Gen San Aung of National Defence College of the Union of Myanmar and then signed the visitors' book and visited the exhibition room of the college.
At Anawrahta Hall of the college, on behalf of the commandant, Deputy Commandant Col Myint Aung extended greetings and explained facts about the college with video tapes to the delegation.
Col Ye Htut and Col Kyaw Thein of the Ministry of Defence, Police Lt-Col Sit Aye of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Director U Pe Than Oo of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Director-General Daw Than Nwe of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development explained facts about respective ministries with the aid of video tapes to the delegation.
Afterwards, they exchanged souvenirs and the leader of the delegation spoke words of thanks.

YANGON, 12 July – Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials inspected No-2 Machine and Tool Factory of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries in South Okkalapa Township this afternoon.
General Manager U Ko Ko Gyi reported on products, production, installation of machines and implementation for targets.
Managing Director U Kyaw Win took part in the discussions.
The minister inspected production of hospital bed, wheelchair for patients and mobile carriage used in operation theatre.
The minister went to production section-2 in Thingangyun Township and inspected production of steel cupboard and fire extinguishers.

(9) Yangon Command offers Waso robes
YANGON, 12 July – Waso robe offering ceremony of Yangon Command was held at the command in Konmyinttha in Mayangon Township this morning.
Congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kosalla.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Marlar Tint presented offertories to the members of the Sangha.
The Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Alms were offered to the members of the Sangha.

YANGON, 12 July – Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of Indonesia Maj-Gen (Pol) A Poerwanto Lenggono (Retd) who has completed his tour of duty at Office of Myanmar Radio and Television on Pyay Road this afternoon.
Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV, Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise, Adviser to the Minister for Information U Kyaw Min and Head of Office U Khin Maung Myint.

YANGON, 12 July – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met President Mr Sun Jianrong and party of Tianjin Machinery Import and Export Group of the People' s Republic of China, Plant Engineer Mr Chanin Wichien and party of Siam Cement Industry Co Ltd of Thailand and Vice General Manager Mr Sie Ji Hu and party of Kunming Light Industry Machinery General Corporation of the PRC who separately called at his office this afternoon.

(12) 62 members resign from Pale Township NLD
YANGON, 12 July – Sixty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division.
Sixty-two members of Pale Township NLD Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 17 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(13) Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship continues
YANGON, 12 July – The Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship continued for the second day at the National Indoor Stadium-l on Waizayanta Road in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, this morning.
Among the spectators were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman of Leading Committee for Holding the Championship Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, members of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, Honorary Secretary-General of Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) Mr Datuk Puch Gunalan, General-Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, President of Myanmar Badminton Federation U Kyi Nyunt, township education officers and heads of basic education schools in Yangon Division, players and trainees of Sports Plus Education Training School.
The championship was handled by referee Mr Yap Tee Loy of Malaysia, deputy referees Mr S Murali Dharan of India and U Robin Tin of Myanmar.
Indonesia beat Singapore 3-2, Chinese-Taibei beat Japan 3-2, China beat Sri Lanka 5-0 and Republic of Korea beat Thailand 3-2 in girls' team event.
China beat Singapore 3-2, Republic of Korea beat Thailand 3-2, Indonesia beat Japan 3-2 and Malaysia beat Chinese-Taibei 3-2 in boys' team event.
