(1)  Secretary-1 inspects wood-based industrial zone (Wartaya) in Shwepyitha

YANGON, 11 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the briefing hall of wood-based industrial zone (Wartaya) in Shwepyitha Township this morning.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, departmental heads and officials.

The Secretary-1 inspected preview of value-added wood products to be displayed in Myanmar Showroom at South Africa Trade Fair and gave instructions.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected low-cost single unit houses to be built by Myanma Timber Enterprise.

Chairman of Woodland Co Ltd U Win Aung reported on arrangement for construction of saw mill and furniture factory.

The Secretary-1 and party went to finished wood products and furniture factory of Tawwin Family Co where they were welcomed by Chairman U Ko Ko Htwe and members of the Board of Directors.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected production process, finished products and salesroom.

They also inspected parquet factory. They then proceeded to No-3 Saw Mill of MTE and they were conducted round the mill by Manager U Thein Swe and officials.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected factories of Myodaw Furniture Co Ltd. Minister U Aung Phone reported on locations and areas, construction of road, power supply and consumption and construction of wood-based factories and operation and arrangements for construction of container yard.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Myodaw Furniture Co Ltd member of Yangon City Development Committee U Aung Soe reported on facts about the factory and Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than on construction of the port at the wood-based industrial zone.

The Secretary-1 then gave instructions and left the zone.

(2)  Secretary-1 attends Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton

YANGON, 11 July – A ceremony to open the Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999 was held at the National Indoor Stadium-1 on Waizayanta Road in Thingangyun Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were President of Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Korn Dabbarnnsi, ministers of the Union of Myanmar and their wives, Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman of Leading Committee for Holding of the. Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999 Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win and members, deputy ministers, Vice-President of ABC Deputy Minister of Defence of Malaysia Dr Datuk Fadzil Che Wan, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and diplomats, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Head of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members of the panel of patrons, departments heads, local and foreign journalists led by Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise, President of Myanmar Badminton Federation U Kyi Nyunt and executives, presidents of the various sports federations, chairmen and members of sub-committees, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, guests, managers, coaches and badminton players of the respective countries.

First, players of Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Chinese-Taipei, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Vietnam and hosts Myanmar teams took the positions.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win delivered an opening address.

(3)  Secretary-1 plants tree to mark day for greening of school and environment

YANGON, 11 July – Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the
State Peace and Development Committee Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at No 2 Basic Education High School in Sangyoung Township this morning.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, departmental heads, members of School Board of Trustees, EC members of the Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw Khin May Gyi, teachers and students. The Secretary-1 planted a tree in the school compound to mark the day for greening of school and environment.

The ministers, the deputy ministers, teachers and students then planted trees to mark the day for greening of school and environment.

(4)  Myanma Industrial Development Bank holds fourth annual general meeting

YANGON, 11 July – The fourth annual general meeting of Myanma Industrial Development Bank was held in its hall on Pansodan Street this afternoon with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said Myanma Industrial Development Committee taking the motto "to overcome the era with industrial might" laid down by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe himself as guidance, is working hard day and night for the development of the industrial sector of the State to such an extent that the era can be overcome with industrial might.

Moreover, the Central Committee for Industrial Development led by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye held its first meeting on 15-6-99, and it is working hard with the aims of ensuring the emergence of mechanized agricultural system, extending the establishment of new factories and plants, operating the present factories and plants at full capacity and ensuring the considerable development of the already-established industrial zones and the on the private sector.

(5)  Secretary-2 meets Staff Officers of Commands and LIDs

YANGON, 11 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo met Staff Officers (Grade I) (Adjt) and (QM) and General Staff Officers (Grade I) at the new hall of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Director of Signals Brig-Gen Aung Myint, Director of Artillery and Armour Brig-Gen Kyi Win, Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint, senior military officers and staff officers of comm. ands and LIDs.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the government is endeavouring for emergence of a new peaceful, modern developed nation with added momentum and the Tatmadaw has to strive in extended cultivation, promotion of industrial and trade sectors.

He spoke at length on undertakings for welfare of service personnel and Tatmadaw members and their families and efforts in nation-building tasks with four outlooks namely, military, political, economic and administrative outlooks.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on importance of electric power, arrangement for generating more power, use of power and new power rate and fulfillment of power needs. Officials also reported on works.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Secretary-2.

(6)  14th Meeting of 47-member Fourth State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee commences

YANGON, 11 July – The 14th Meeting of the 47-member Fourth State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee commenced at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin today.

Present at the first-day session were Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaws, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, Director-General of Department of Religious Affairs U Amt Maung, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana U Sann Lwin, Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Religious Affairs U Thet Shay, Deputy Director-General of Department of Religious Affairs Dr Myo Myint, officials of the two departments, and religious affairs officers of states and divisions.

Chairman Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita presided over the meeting, with Joint Secretary Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Labhasami as the master of ceremonies.

The Chairman Sayadaw delivered the ovadakatha.

He said it has been over 19 years since the 11-14 Waxing of Nayon 1342 Myanmar Era, during which various Sangha organizations were formed with the aim of purification and propagation of the Sasana, and tasks have been implemented for the religious affairs, educational affairs and Vinicchaya affairs.

Though the objectives for purification, perpetuation and propagation of the Sasana have not fully materialized yet, success is achieved to a considerable extent during the 19 years, he said.

(7)  Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation tours Magway, Mandalay Divisions

YANGON, 11 July – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, inspected Hsebauk Vineyard of Myanma Agriculture Service in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Division, on 9 July.

Meeting with the personnel and workers, he gave instructions on agricultural training, systematic establishment of the vineyard to be a model farm and staff welfare.

In his meeting with farmers, the minister gave suggestions on mixed cropping of sunflower, use of quality strains and natural fertilizers. He later inspected the sesamum plantation near Awasan Village, construction of Linta Cotton Ginning Factory in Taungdwingyi Township, building of Ngamin embankment, inflow and irrigation works at Saddan Dam in Myothit Township, and construction of Sun Creek Dam Project two miles upstream Myaybyintha Village.

Sun Creek Dam Project is one of the irrigation dam projects on the eastern sector of Magway Division. On completion, it will be 9,400 feet long and 131 feet high with a storage capacity of 31,225 acre-feet to irrigate 7,000 acres of crops.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin later toured Aunglan and No 10 Sugar Mill Project near Pyinbinhla Village.

(8)  Minister inspects Mandalay International Airport Project

YANGON, 11 July – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung, Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint and officials, left here by air this morning and arrived at Chanmyathazi Airport in Mandalay.

Then, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, the minister, the deputy minister and party went to Panlaung River Bridge Project at the entrance of Mandalay International Airport by car.

The commander, the minister, the deputy minister and party inspected the project and gave instructions on the works.

In the briefing hall of the project, officials on progress of work. Afterwards, the minister, the deputy minister and party proceeded to the control tower of Mandalay International Airport and inspected machinery and equipment there.

They also inspected the new building of the airport, the arrival lounge and the departure lounge and gave instructions.

(9)  President of ABC

YANGON, 11 July – President of Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) Deputy Premier of Thailand Mr. Korn Dabbarnnsi left here for home by air this morning after attending the opening ceremony of the Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Championship 1999.

He was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak and officials.

(10)  The 1999 World Population Day held at International Centre

YANGON, 11 July – The 1999 World Population Day was held at International Centre on Pyay Road this morning, with an address by Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the deputy ministers, heads of the embassies and officials, the resident representatives of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and officials of UN agencies, personnel of Non-Governmental Organizations, officials, prize winners and guests.

Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun delivered an address. He said: It gives me a great pleasure to address this auspicious gathering on the Occasion of the Commemoration of World Population Day which falls on today. The theme of this year commemoration is "Decisions for Twenty-first Century, Choice and Responsibility".

Resident Representative of UNFPA Mr Patrice Coeurbizot gave a speech.

Director-General Col Tin Yi of Population Department read the message from Executive Director Dr Nafis Sadik of UNFPA.

The UNFPA showed the video feature n commemoration of 1999 World Population Day.

Then, Minister U Saw Tun, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Minister Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister U Win Sein and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin presented prizes to the winners in translation competition in commemoration of 1999 World Population Day.

Director-General Col Tin Yi presented gifts to officials of the organizations who assisted to hold the ceremony in commemoration of the World Population Day.

(11)  61 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 11 July – Sixty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Sixty-one members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  Heads of State/Division Religious Affairs Departments hold meeting

YANGON, 11 July – A four-monthly work coordination meeting of heads of State/Division Religious Affairs Departments of the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held in the meeting hall of the ministry.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa gave instructions on opening of Pariyatti Sarthintaiks, conducting religious courses and matters related to promotion and propagation of the Sasana.

The heads of State/Division Religious Affairs Department reported on their works done at the respective states and divisions. The directors-general also took part in the discussions. The deputy minister gave instructions on the works.
