(1) Thabyeyoe Dam built by Construction 7 of the Irrigation Department opened

YANGON, 9 July – Thabyeyoe Dam built by Construction 7 of the Irrigation Department was opened in Wundwin Township, Mandalay Division, this morning. It was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address on the occasion. The Secretary-2 said Thabyeyoe Dam was built to supply water to Taungpulu Dam to enable the latter to operate at full capacity in irrigating 8,000 effective areas.

The dry Anya gets round about 20 inches of rain per year; and in some parts annual amount of rain is less than ten inches.

Knowing the situation of the Anya region, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance to pay special emphasis on the greening of nine districts in Anya.

The Secretary-2 quoted the Senior General as saying, "If the forests in Anya could not be restored rainfall would become less and farming might have become almost impossible in Anya. We will give priority to the greening of nine districts. Dams will have to be built in every possible place to develop agriculture."

In accordance with the Head of State's guidance reservoirs, diversion dams and pumped-water irrigation stations are emerging one after another in Anya region.

The Secretary-2 said dams such as Samon, Yindaw, Chaungmagyi, Chaunggauk, Thettaw, Lephyu and Kintha can be seen in the surrounding areas of Wundwin, Kyauktalone, Thamekku, Welaung, Taungtha, Sunlon, South Pinle and North Pinle are located in the vicinity of Myingyan District; and Mondaing, Taungpulu and Alaungsithu are existing dams in the region.

There are now about 60 pumped-water irrigation stations along Ayeyawady, Dokhtawady, Sarnon, Panlaung and Paunglaung rivers.

Unlike in the past, Anya now is green with flora as efforts are being made to conserve forest, to set up fire wood plantations and produce briquettes. Trees should be conserved as a national task as depletion of forests will also destroy soil and water conditions leading to adverse climate changes.

Lush forests will ensure excellent flow of water into darns which were built at a cost of kyats in billions and better climate conditions.

The government while making endeavors to green and supply water to Anya, it is also rendering assistance to farmers to use modern methods to gradually advance to mechanized farming. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Ye Myint made a speech, saying 25 irrigation projects have  been implemented in Mandalay Division from 1988 to date, and the present one is the 26th, adding Thittatkon Dam Project in Myittha Township and Zidaw Dam Project in Nahtogyi Township are under construction, and urged all to maintain the dam for long-term use and use water from the dam beneficially.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin also spoke on the occasion, saying 98 dams and diversion weirs were opened, in more than 10 years by the government for ensuring uplift of living standard of farmers, majority of the people, urging local farmers to use water from the dam beneficially.

The minister then presented gifts to personnel of ID who built the dam and then formally unveiled the stone plaque of the dam. Deputy Director-General of ID U Myo Myint formally opened the dam.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the dam and had souvenir photos taken.

Thabyeyoe Dam is built across Thabyeyoe Creek near Taungnyo Village in Wundwin Township at a cost of K 130 million. It is 1150 feet in length and 75 feet in height with a capacity to store 7100 acre feet of water. It can fully supply water to 7,636 acres of catchments area of Taungpulu Dam.
