(1) A work coordination meeting on implementation of annual plans for 1999-2000 of Yangon, Ayeyawady and Bago Divisions was held

YANGON, 6 July – A work coordination meeting on implementation of annual plans for 1999-2000 of Yangon, Ayeyawady and Bago Divisions was held in the meeting hall of the office of Commander-in-Chief (Army) this morning with an address by Chairman of the Central Committee for Economic and Agricultural Development Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.

Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein acted as master of ceremonies.

In his address, General Maung Aye said to further strengthen the economic growth of the State, four-year and five-year plans were laid down and are being implemented.

(2) Secretary-3 inspects progress in bridge construction projects on Yangon-Sittway Highway in Rakhine State

YANGON, 6 July – Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint inspected major bridge projects on Yangon-Sittway Highway in Rakhine State – Yamaung Bridge Project in Minbya Township and Kissapanadi Bridge Project in Kyauktaw Township-on 4 July.

The Secretary-3 and party were welcomed at Yamaung Bridge Project by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials, Chairman U Than Htay Nyunt of Minbya Township Peace and Development Council and officials, families of the regional battalion, personnel of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Township Committee for Women's Affairs, Red Cross and Fire Brigade members and local people.

First, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials took the Secretary-3 and party on a tour of the project area where construction works are under way with the use of heavy machines.

In the briefing hall of the project, Deputy superintending Engineer U Ba Wan of Bridge Construction Group 5 reported to the Secretary-3 on the project.

The Secretary-3 gave instructions on meeting the set standards, minimizing loss and was age, ensuring work-site safety and carrying out staff welfare programmes.

Afterwards, he cordially met personnel of the project and local people.

Yamaung Bridge is being built across Yamaung River on Yangon-Sittway Highway in Minbya Township. On completion, it will be 1,300 feet long with two lanes. It is being installed with reinforced concrete piers.

The construction commenced on 22 August 1997, and now personnel are making efforts for timely completion.

(3) Secretary-3 attends ceremony to provide cash assistance to disabled in-service Tatmadaw members

YANGON, 6 July – A ceremony to provide cash assistance to disabled Tatmadaw members who are in service in units and regiments under Western Command was held at Bandoola Hall of the command in Sittway on 4 July, attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Next, Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe presented K 3.9 million for 38 disabled
Tatmadaw members to WO II Aung Kyaw Zan.

The commander and the deputy commander presented saving books to disabled Tatmadaw members.

Chairperson of Rakhine State Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Working Committee for Women's Affairs wife of the commander Daw Khin Hnin Wai presented K 100,000 to a disabled Tatmadaw member.

The Secretary-3 later met officers, family members and disabled Tatmadaw members.

(4) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Norway

YANGON, 6 July – On behalf of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Ambassador of Norway Mr Knut Solem who had completed his tour of duty at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call together with Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department.

(5) Minister inspects construction of Botahtaung No 2 container yard

YANGON, 6 July – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials inspected construction of Botahtaung No 2 container yard this morning.

The minister and party inspected warehouses, construction and progress of work and flooring at the warehouses.

Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay reported on construction of the project, construction materials, implementation of the project in 1998-99, funds and expenditure, Chief Civil Engineer U Khin Maung Zaw on supply of construction materials, construction of sub-power station and Deputy General Manager U Myint Thaung on progress of the project.

Deputy Minister U Pe Than took part in the discussions.

The Minister and party inspected the construction site and proceeded to Theinbyu Shipyard where they heard reports on production of acetylene. They later inspected docking of ships, the site for slipway and jetties.

(6) USDA youth delegation leaves for ROK

YANGON, 6 July – An eight-member youth delegation of the Union Solidarity and Development Association left for the Republic of Korea by air yesterday evening to attend the 10th Get-together of International Youth in Seoul and Pyong chang of ROK up to 13 July.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by General Secretary of USDA U Than Aung, member of Central Executive Committee U Than Shwe and officials.

(7) 307 members resign from Mohnyin Township NLD

YANGON, 6 July – A ceremony to present 307 resignations of members of Mohnyin Township National League for Democracy, Kachin State was held at the Affiliated Middle School of 10 miles Ywathit Village, Mohnyin Township at 12.30 pm on 22 June 1999.

Three hundred and seven members of Mohnyin Township NLD, Kachin State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mohnyin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Secretary of 10th mile Ywathit Village-tract NLD U Shwe Win, on behalf of the party members, handed over the letters of resignation to Chairman of the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Mya Kyaing.

(8) Minister meets Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON, 6 July – Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel met Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady who had completed her tour of duty at his office at 10 am today.

Also present at the call were officials concerned.

(9) Talks on agricultural techniques for USDA members

YANGON, 6 July – Talks on agricultural techniques organized by Yangon Division Union Solidarity and Development Association, were held at Yangon Division USDA Office on Saya San Road in Bahan Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were member of the Secretariat of USDA Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, members of Central Executive Committee of USDA Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe and Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and EC members, executives and members.

Col Thaik Tun gave an opening speech. Officials then gave lectures on agricultural techniques.

(10) GDP Evaluation Course concludes

YANGON, 6 July – The Gross Domestic Products (GDP) Evaluation Course No 2/99, organized by Planning Department of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, concluded at the office of National Archives Department this evening.

Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun made a speech.
 

Also present on the occasion were directors-general of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, directors-general of Development of Border Areas and National Races Department and Development Affairs Department, officials and trainees.

The deputy minister presented certificates to the trainees.

Altogether 40 trainees attended the course.

(11) Minister meets Chairman of Golden Asia Inter Co Ltd

YANGON, 6 July – Minister for Hotels arid Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Chairman of Golden Asia Inter Co Ltd of Thailand Mr Upakit Pachariyangkun and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

(12) Myanmar, Malaysia to play friendly soccer

YANGON, 6 July – Myanmar will play friendly soccer matches with Malaysia on 18 and 20 July at Thuwunna Youth Sports Training Centre Stadium.

A coordination meeting on the soccer matches took place at Aung San Stadium with the attendance of Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials.

The matches will start at 4pm.

Admission is K 300 for the grand stand and K 100 for others.

Tickets will be sold in advance at Aung San Stadium, Theinbyu Tennis Plaza, Salin Sports Ground, Thuwunna YSTC Stadium and National Indoor Stadium-1.

(13) Photo exhibition at Yangon Shanghai Int'l Centre

YANGON, 6 July – Photo exhibition to mark the conclusion of the photo contest with the them '99 Happy Water Festival" is open at the Yangon Shanghai International Centre on Maha Bandoola Street in Latha Township beginning today up to 20 July.

More than 230 colour and black & white photos were experienced Myanmar photographers.

The Yangon Shanghai International Co Ltd sponsored the competition in cooperation with Myanmar Photographic Society with the aim of promoting and preserving Myanmar culture and traditions of Myanmar people and in commemoration of the company's third anniversary of opening.

(14) 18th C-in-C (Air)'s Shield Chess Championship begins

YANGON, 6 July – The opening of 18th Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Shield Chess Championship was held at Maintenance Base in Mingaladon this morning.

Commander of the base Col Khin Maung Aye gave a speech and opened the championship.

Present on the occasion were officials of the Commander-in-Chief (Air) Office, air base commanders, squadron  commanders, guests and spectators.

Altogether 10 chess teams are taking part in the championship which will continue tip to 13 July.

(15) Vietnamese Army Delegation visits Defence Services Museum Historical Research Institute

YANGON, 6 July – A four-member museum study delegation led by Senior Col Lee Ma Luong of Vietnamese Army of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam visited to Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

The delegation called on Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road.

Col Ye Htut conducted the delegation members round the museum.

In the afternoon, the delegation together with Col Ye Htut went to Defence Services is Historical Research Institute Office on Konmyinttha of Yangon Command Headquarters.

In the evening, Director of DSMHRI Col Ye Htut hosted dinner at the Karaweik Palace in hour of the Vietnamese delegation.
