YANGON, 5 July – Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr. Hugo Chavez, President of the Republic of Venezuela, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Venezuela which falls on 5 July 1999.

(2)  Minister for Foreign Affairs sends felicitations to Venezuela

YANGON, 5 July – U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Jose Vincente Rangel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Venezuela, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Venezuela which falls on 5 July 1999.

(3)  Secretary-1 calls for strengthening of intelligentsia of the country

YANGON, 4 July – Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt addressed the opening ceremonies of Special Refresher Course No 2 for Basic Education Teachers at the Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, and multimedia classrooms of basic education high schools in Mandalay yesterday.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division.

The Secretary-1 attended and addressed the opening ceremony of Special Refresher Course No 2 for Basic Education Teachers in Yandana Hall of the institute at 1.45 pm.

Also present at the ceremony were Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Maj-Gen Soe Win, ministers, the chairman of CSSTB and member U Hla Myint Oo, deputy ministers, the Mayor of Mandalay, senior military officers, Lt-Col Pe Nyein, department heads, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, Rector of CICS (Upper Myanmar) Col Aung Hsan Win, pro-rectors, heads of departments of the institute, instructors and trainee teachers.

In his address, the Secretary-1 said the State Peace and Development Council in its endeavors in developing the nation from all-sectors is launching education promotion programmes for emergence of an international level education system which is in conformity with the future political, economic and social conditions of the nation.

The patriotic intellectuals and intelligentsia who are a major force for national defence and nation-building tasks are much required as the nation has gained peace and good political, economic and social conditions; and the new nation is being built with the united strength of the entire national people.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer room, the multimedia class room and the painting room. A ceremony to mark the opening of multimedia class rooms was held at BEHS No 12 in Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay and the Secretary-l addressed the ceremony.

Headmistress of BEHS No 12 Daw Khin Thein reported on the multimedia class rooms being opened at basic education schools in Mandalay according to the education promotion programmes.

Chairman of the School Board of Trustees of BEHS No 12 U Sein Mu reported on formation of school boards of trustees at the basic education school and measures being taken by the school boards of trustees in cooperation with school heads and teaching staff to effectively provide requirements of the schools and to raise the education standard of the students.

In his address, the Secretary-1 said due to active and collective efforts of authorities from respective regions, teachers and the school boards trustees, multimedia classrooms are emerging at the basic education schools; it is heartening to see that students are using computers skillfully their studies.

Today, information technology is emerging on the basis of the computer technology.

It can be estimated that the IQ of our student youths is so high as to stand tall in the south-east Asia if they are given education and knowledge with the use of modern teaching aids.

According to the education promotion programmes drawn by officials of the Ministry of Education and teachers, multimedia class rooms are emerging at schools not only in the cities but also in the townships in so short a time due to the leadership of the Government and concerted efforts of the school boards of trustees. He called on regional authorities, teachers and members of the school board of trustees to make concerted efforts for the successful implementation of the education promotion programmes designed to turn out the youths of high ability needed in the efforts to build a modern and developed nation. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 signed in the visitors' book of the school and had photos taken together with school heads and members of the school board of trustees.

(4)  Aung Zeya Bridge Project 72 per cent complete

YANGON, 4 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge spanning Hline River to link Insein Township with Hlinethaya Township.

He was accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yang on Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials.

He inspected construction of the approach structure and piers on Insein bank. Superintending Engineer (Project) of Public Works U Khin Maung Aye reported to him on progress of work in the project. Deputy Minister U Tint Swe presented a supplementary report.

Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than reported on the plans to transport the frames and beams for the bridge and the waterway, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa on the plans for completion of the approach structures as scheduled, and Chairman of Insein Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Kyaw and Chairman of Yang on North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu on the cooperation and assistance of the district and township in the project.

The Secretary-2 fulfilled the requirements and gave instructions on prevention of loss and wastage and w site safety. The project officials and workers are striving for completion of the bridge as scheduled.

The entire project has been completed 72 per cent 85 per cent on Hlinethaya side, 65 per cent in construction of piers and 90 per cent in construction of the approach structure piers.

(5)  Myanmar Women's Day observed in Mawlamyine

YANGON, 4 July – The Myanmar Women's Day was observed at Mon State Peace and Development Council Office on 3 July.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung, leader of Mon State Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation wife of the commander Daw Thazin Khaing, Deputy Commander Col Myo Hla and wife, officials, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, nurses, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade members.

Daw Thanzin Khaing gave an opening speech. Professor of Myanmarsar Department of Mawlamyine University Daw Thaung Yin and Assistant Lecturer of Mawlamyine Education College Daw Myint Win lectured on Myanmar women's right.

Then, well-wishers donated cash towards the funds of Mon State Women's Affairs Committee and Mawlamyine Home for the Women.

The wife of the commander and officials accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.

(6)  K 4.2m presented for Pathein General Hospital fund

YANGON, 4 July – Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council and donors presented contributions to Pathein General Hospital its fund at the hospital on 2 July.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe and senior officers, commanding officers, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, officials of Working Committee for Women's Affairs and Maternal and Child Welfare Association and guests. The commander delivered a speech.

Next, officials of the command and well-wishers presented K 4.2 million for purchase of medical equipment to Head of Division Health Department Dr U Bo Kywe and Medical Superintendent Dr U Khin Maung Tin. The commander and party inspected the hospital.

(7)  Bago Division Rice Millers' Association formed

YANGON, 4 Jul – A ceremony to form Bago Division Rice Millers' Association was held at Thiri Oktha Hall in Oktha Myothit in Bago on 2 July.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Secretary of Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htain Win and members, Chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Council departmental officials and rice millers.

The commander and the deputy minister delivered speeches. General Secretary of Myanmar Rice Miller's Association U Tin Maung Win and Division Manager of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Aung Khin reported on functions and list for approval. Chairman of Bago Division Rice Millers' Association U Ko Ko Gyi then spoke on the occasion. The ceremony ended with the concluding remarks by the commander.

(8)  Divisional Women's Affairs Working Committee opens education centre

YANGON, 4 July – Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win attended the opening ceremony of an education centre of the Divisional Women's Affairs Working Committee at the Monywa District Peace and Development Council Office in Monywa on 2 July.

Also present were Daw Than Than Nwe, member of the Divisional Working Committee wife of Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win, members of the Division, district and township Working Committees, Commanding Officers of regiments and units of Monywa Station, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Associations and departmental personnel. Chairman of the Divisional Working Committee U Chit Maung explained the objectives for opening of the centre. The signboard of the centre was then unveiled by member of the Working Committee Daw Than Than Nwe.

(9)  Minister inspects factories in Sagaing, Magway Divisions

YANGON, 4 July – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Chairman of Pakkoku District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Soe and departmental heads, arrived at No 2 Cigarette Factory in Pakkoku yesterday morning.

He inspected production process of the factory and warehouses, Virginia factory and its warehouses. Minister U Aung Thaung met service personnel of the factory and gave instructions on boosting production.

At 10 am, the minister chose the sites for the textile mills and garment factories in Pakkoku.

In the afternoon, he met township level officials of Salingyi Township. Minister U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Chairman of Monywa District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Nyunt and officials, inspected site chosen for construction of the garment factory at the junction of Paungwa-Sethton Road in Salingyi.

At 4 pm, the minister and party arrived at antibiotic medicines production department at Twintaun, Budalin.

(10)  Minister for Commerce inspects rice mills in Pathein

YANGON, 4 July – Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and officials, inspected the 150-ton Rice Mill No 612 and Rice Mill No 01 in Pathein today.

The managers of the rice mills and other officials reported to him on the project targets and implementation, milling, conditions of warehouses, storage and staff welfare.

The minister fulfilled the requirements and gave suggestions on the tasks for realization of the targets, preparatory works for storage of crops as there will be increase in the purchase of paddy and other crops, transport of export rice, prevention of loss and wastage, constant maintenance of machines and mills for running them in full capacity, security of the mills and providing each staff member or worker with 16 pyis of rice every month, among others.

The minister and party next proceeded to the Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading Divisional Manager's Office in Pathein.

In his meeting with the staff, the minister spoke of paddy purchase in Ayeyawady Division, prevention of loss and wastage, systematic keeping of accounts, disbursing of advance money, systematic supervision, discipline, improvement of rice mills and bran-oil mills, planting of trees in the compounds of factories, mills and warehouses, welfare and other matters.

(11)  Deputy Minister inspects Maha Bandoola Bridge Project

YANGON, 4 July – Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, together with officials of the Public Works, arrived at the site of Maha Bandoola Bridge Project this morning.

The deputy minister and party inspected the construction works on the bank of Pazundaung Township.

The deputy minister also inspected the storage of iron beams imported from the People's Republic of China and other construction materials and gave instructions on systematic storage of construction materials.

Then, the deputy minister and party went to the site on the bank of Dawbon Township.

Officials reported on progress of work. The deputy minister gave instructions on timely completion of construction works, work-site safety and systematic storage of construction materials.

(12)  Cleaning and greening along railroad carried out to mark Myanmar Women's Day

YANGON, 4 July – Vice Chairman of Yang on Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander of Yang on Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, accompanied by military region commanders, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils, the general-manager (Engineers/Admin) of Myanma Railways, staff officers of the command and officials, inspected special cleaning works along the circular railroad in commemoration of Myanmar Women's Day this morning.

The deputy commander and party were welcomed by chairmen of respective Township Peace and Development Councils and officials.

The deputy commander and party inspected sanitation works and greening works on both sides of the railroad. Over 15,000 persons including Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force members, service personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, local people of 17 townships participated in the cleaning works with 24 garbage vans and two trains.

(13)  Prize winners of translations essay competitions to mark World Population Day announced

YANGON, 4 July – The prize winners of translation and essay competitions in commemoration of the World Population Day were announced today.

U Nay Myo Aung of Gyogon, Insein was first, Captain Win Myint of Room 8, Building 4, Bayintnaung Yeiktha, Dhammazedi Road second and Daw Lay Kyu of 133/3, Shwedagon Pagoda Road, Latha third in open translation competition.

Maung Tun Tun Win of 58, 125th Street, Mingala Taungnyunt, was first, Ma Sanda Tin Tin of 33, Adipadi Road, Yang on University second and Maung Win Tun of Room 12, Building 2 of Railways Yeiktha, Insein Road, West Gyogon third in basic level translation competition.

Ma Khin Thida of Thida Hall, Defence Services General Hospital, Mingaladon, was first, Ma Aye Myat Thanda of 1073, Konbaung 10th Street, Ward 8, South Okkalapa second and Ma Htet Htet Aung of Room 9, Building 72, Anawrahta Street, Kyauktada third in open level essay competition.

Ma Lin Lin Thu, Ninth Standard Student of Basic Education High School No 1 of North Okkalapa was first, Ma Thanda Aung, Ninth Standard Student of BEHS No 2 of Kyimyindine second and Ma Mya Hnin Wai, Tenth Standard Student of BEHS No 2 of Insein third in BEHS level essay competition.

Ma Su Su Zaw, Seventh Standard Student of BEHS No 3 of Dagon Myothit (North) was first, Ma Thinza Win, Seventh Standard Student of BEHS No 4 of Pazundaung and Ma The Su Aung second, Seventh Standard Student of BEHS No 3 of Mingala Taungnyunt third in BEMS level essay competition.

The prize presentation ceremony will be held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road on 10 July. The prize winners of open and basic level translation and open level essay competitions are to contact Assistant Director U Sein Myo Aung of Population Department at 416, Maha Bandoola Street and winners of BEHS and BEMS essay competitions at Deputy Director-General U Thaung Shwe of Basic Education Department (former St Paul School), not later than 9 July.

YANGON, 4 July-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and members of Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at Khitthit tea shop, at the corner of Bo Min Yaung and Lawpita Streets in Ward 34 of Dagon Myothit (North) Township, nabbed Aung Aung (a) Zaw Zaw (a) Kyaw Gyi (a) Kalar (a) Nyan Zaw, son of U Aung Than of 15, Padauk Street, Ward 5/2, Shwepyitha Township, and Zaw Min Tun, son of U Htwe Gyi of 128, Malikha Street, Ward 6/14, Shwepyitha Township, together with heroin weighing 48.9717 grams.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(15)  Cooperative Department official leaves for Singapore

YANGON, 4 July – Deputy Director-General of Cooperative Department U Than Aung and Managing Director of Cartel of GEC Education Cooperatives Syndicate Ltd U Tin Tun left here for Singapore to attend the Fifth Asian Region Coordination Meeting of International Co operatives Alliance and the 11th Human Resources Development and Research Committee Meeting to be held from 4 to 11 July.

They were seen off at the airport by Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti and officials.

(16)  Mongphyat Township NLD

YANGON, 4 July – Fifty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mongphyat Township, Shan State (East) State.

Fifty-eight members of Mongphyat Township NLD, Shan State (East) State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mongphyat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
