1. State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to USA

YANGON, 4 July – Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to the Honourable William Jefferson Clinton, President of the United States of America, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the United States of America which falls on 4 July 1999.

2. Women enjoy equal rights as men in Myanmar; Myanmar women safeguard lineage, culture, without conceit, arrogance Myanmar Women's Day marked with presentation of prizes

YANGON, 3 Jul – Myanmar Women's Day was observed with a ceremony sponsored by the Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road at 8 am today.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended it and delivered an address on the occasion.

In his address, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said every nation or race has its own significant or cherished days observed in accord with its own history, culture and traditions.

3. International Day of Cooperatives observed

YANGON, 3 July – The International Day of Cooperatives 1999 was observed at the National Theatre on Myomakyaung Road this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Patron of the Leading Committee Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San delivered an address.

4. Secretary-2 attends prize presentation ceremony for high performance in crop cultivation and production for- 1998-99 in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 3 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo left here by helicopter for Pathein, Ayeyawady Division, this morning.

They were welcomed there by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Swe and departmental officials.

The Secretary-2 and party then attended a ceremony to open the newly built Town Hall at the corner of Strand Pathein.

Also present were departmental officials, teachers and students, members of social organizations and Pathein residents.

On the occasion, Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann handed documents related to the hall to Minister Col Thein Nyunt, and then they formally opened the hall.

The Secretary-2 also formally unveiled the signboard of the hall which he inspected.

The two-storey Town Hall built at a cost of K 105 million lies on a 500 feet by 200 feet plot. It is 175 feet in length, 118 in width and 38 in height.

Afterwards, a prize presentation ceremony for high performance in crop production for 1998-99 in Ayeyawady Division was held at the same hall, attended by the Secretary-2.

The Secretary-2 and party attended a demonstration on production of EM Bokashi at the plantation of Pathein University.

General Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service Dr Nyi Nyi reported on its production and usefulness.

They then inspected production of EM Bokashi The Secretary-2 and party inspected production of paddy-husk briquettes at the showroom of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading.

In the evening, the Secretary-2 and party met members of Division Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, Chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Agricultural Supervisory Committee and national entrepreneurs.

The Secretary-2 spoke on efforts for success of objectives of economic plans.

Minister U Soe Tha and Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann took part in the discussions.

They arrived back here in the evening.

5. Cash assistance provided to in-service disabled Tatmadawmen

YANGON, 3 July – Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo today attended the ceremony to provide cash assistance to the in service disabled Tatmadawmen of the South-West Command and presented account books.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun delivered addresses.

Well-wishers then presented cash donations which included K 3.83 million by South-West Command, K 600,000 by No 66 Light Infantry Division, K 1.5 million and 34 pairs of crutches by Thanmyanthu Enterprise, K 70,000 by Pathein District and Township Peace and Development Councils, K 60,000 by Hinthada District and Township Councils, K 50,000 by Myaungmya District and Township Councils, K 40,000 by Maubin District and Township Councils, K 40,000 by Pyapon District and Township Councils, K 130,000 by the Maternal and Child Welfare Association of 26 townships, K 100,000 by Ayeyawady Division Women Affairs Committee, K 130,090 by the Women's Entrepreneurial Association, among others.

Afterwards, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann presented account books to the in-service disabled Tatmadawmen.

6. MIC Chairman meets Director of Asia Region of International, Chamber of Commerce

YANGON, 3 July – Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Director Ms Louise Barrington of Hong Kong-based Asia Region of International Chamber of Commerce who called at his office yesterday evening.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung, officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and MIC Office.

They discussed technical assistance and services to be extended by Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce.

7. Over 51,000 eligible voters of Thazi submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Thein Maung

YANGON, 3 July – Over 51,000 eligible voters of Thazi Township Constituency-l of Mandalay Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Maung elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Thazi Township Constituency-l and no support for him at the rallies held in Hanza, Ywagyi and Myesomondaw villages on 28 June morning.

A total of 2,650 local people of seven village-tracts rallied at Hanza Village.

Farmer U Kyaw Soe of Wantha Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Thein Maung of NLD and no support for him. Afterwards, farmer U Kyaw Hla presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Maung and no support for him signed by 19,388 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission U Aye Myint.

Similarly, 2,725 local people of three wards and six village-tracts rallied at Ywagyi Village.

Merchant U Myo Oo of Ywagyi Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Thein Maung of NLD and no support for him. Merchant U Kyaw Myint of the village presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Thein Maung and no support for him signed by 17,324 eligible voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Maung Maung.

8.  Minister inspects construction of mills in Magway Division

YANGON, 3 July – Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw and departmental heads, arrived at Dyeing and Printing Mill Construction Project of the Myanma Textile Industries in Dahatkwin area, three miles from Magway, yesterday morning.

The minister and party inspected completion of construction works, installation of machines, construction of buildings and tower and gave necessary instructions.

Then, Minister U Aung Thaung and party inspected briquette factory of Magway Division Union Solidarity and Development Association.

On arrival at the office of herbal plantation in Pwintbyu Township, Minbu District, at 1.30 pm, Minister U Aung Thaung heard reports on the herbal plantation by Managing Director Col Myint Oo of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries and site chosen for construction of textile mill in Pwintbyu by Col Thein Zaw and Managing Director U San Kyi of MTI. The minister and party chose the site for the factory.

Myanma Textile Industries will construct textile mills in Pwintbyu, Salingyi and Pakkoku within one and a half years.

At 2.30 pm, Minister U Aung Thaung and party went to work site of Myanmar Billion Group Co Ltd in Pwintbyu. Managing Director U Zaw Min of the company reported on reclamation of virgin and fallow land, completion of cultivation and land reclamation works being carried out by entrepreneurs in Minbu District.

9. Thingaha Medals presented to Tatmadaw members of Hmawby Air Base

YANGON, 3 July – A ceremony to present medals to two officers and 51 other ranks of Hmawby Air Base who were given Thingaha Medals by the State was held at Thura Thiha Thura Aung Myat Hall of the air base on 2 July.

Commander of the air base Col Min Khine gave away the medals to the officers and other ranks individually.

10. 44 members resign from Kyaikhto Township NLD

YANGON, 3 July – Forty-four members resigned from National League for Democracy of Kyaikhto Township, Mon State.

Forty-four members of Kyaikhto Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaikhto Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 12 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

11. Donations for Youth Development (Parahita) Centre of Hpa-an

YANGON, 3 July – A ceremony to present donations to Youth Development (Parahita) Centre of Hpa-an by staff members of the Traders Hotel was held at the hotel this morning.

It was attended by Executive Assistant Manager Ms Ester Marcaida and service personnel of the hotel and in-charge of Board of Trustees of the centre U Win Myint of Hpa-an.

The staff families presented K 150,050 and clothes to the Board of Trustees of the centre.

12. Myanmar Women's Day observed in South Okkalapa

YANGON, 3 July – A Tree Planting Ceremony and Eleven Parittas Recitation Contest to mark Myanmar Women's Day were held in South Okkalapa, Yangon East District, this morning.

A total of 350 trees were planted in Ward 5, South Okkalapa, with the participation of Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council Chairman of Township Working Committee for Women' s Affairs U Mya Aung and council members and charity institutions.

The parittas recitation contest was held in the Dhamayon of South Okkalapa Pagoda with an address by Secretary of Township Peace and Development Council U Thein Hla Maung Gyi.

13. MMA (Women's Chapter) presents cash, provisions to nunnery

YANGON, 3 July – Honouring Myanmar Women's Day a ceremony to present cash and provisions to nuns sponsored by specialists of Myanmar Medical Association (Women's Chapter) was held in conjunction with a ceremony to give medical check-up service to the nuns at Thameikdawdya Thukhitarama Daw Nanacari Myanaung Nunnery on Kyundaw Street, Sangyaung, this afternoon.

Specialists of MMA (Women's Chapter) gave medical check-up service and treatment to 200 nuns.
