(1) Secretary-1 receives Ambassador of PRC

YANGON, 1 July – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4.30 pm today.

Also present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department.

(2) Meeting held to coordinate works for development of MAI

YANGON, 1 July – A work coordination meeting on development of Myanmar Airways International under the Ministry of Transport was held in the meeting hall of the ministry this afternoon with an address by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Foreign Affairs U. Win Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Director of the Department of Civil Aviation U Tin Hlaing Hmi and members and departmental personnel.

In his address, the Secretary-1 said it was the second work coordination meeting on development of Myanmar Airways International; MAI is an airline earning good reputation, and it is necessary for all to continue to make concerted efforts to achieve success.

He also called for arrangements to be able to run Yangon-Hong Kong flight and Yangon-Kuala Lumpur flight.

He added it is necessary to publicize MAI services at home and abroad, and MAI is a business and therefore, it is very important to render services effectively.

Then, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on flight services being run and to be run by MAI, the strength of staff, air fare, income and expenditure and the new plan to be carried out for development of Afterwards, the ministers and officials gave suggestions on development of MAI. Then, the Secretary-l gave instructions on the works.

(3) No 2 Mining Enterprise and Myanmar Pongpipat Co sign contract on production of Heinda Mine

YANGON, 1 July – No 2 Mining Enterprise of the Ministry of Mines and Myanmar Pongpipat Co Ltd of Thailand signed a profit-sharing contract on production of Heinda Mine in Dawei Township, Taninthayi Division, at the ministry this evening.

Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint made a speech. Managing Director of No 2 Mining Enterprise U Tin Win and Chairman of Myanmar Pongpipat Co Mr Sompong Chavaltanpipat explained matters related to the mine. Then, they signed the contract and exchanged documents.

(4) Last batch of 402 goods wagons arrives from Yugoslavia

YANGON, 1 July – Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung inspected unloading of new goods wagons on board the Palatin at Sule wharf 5 this afternoon.

The vessel loaded the wagons at the Bar Port in Yugoslavia Today's, arrival of 31 GBHV wagons, 27 MBHV wagons, 15 VBHV wagons and spare parts was the last batch of the 402 goods wagons and spare parts worth US$ 28 million purchased from Yugoslavia The wagons have air pressure brake system that enables proper control of the freight train at a high speed.

Myanma Railways (MR) has scheduled more express freight trains with these goods wagons in the near future. Minister U Pan Aung was welcomed at the wharf by Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin and other officials.

(5) Commander inspects building of Bo Myat Tun Bridge

YANGON, 1 July – Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann inspected prevention of bank erosion at Nyaungdon and construction of Bo Myat Tun Bridge on 27 June.

Accompanied by officials, the commander observed building of rock walls along Hline River to withstand the water flow in preventing bank erosion.

The commander also inspected building of dykes and embankments to prevent flooding of the river.

Officials reported on the progress of work. Priority must be given to the durability of the dams, stressed the commander. At Township Union Solidarity and Development Association Office, the commander cordially met with executives and members of the association.

He gave suggestions to officials on constructing a new building.

At Bo Myat Tun Bridge Construction Project, he heard a report on progress in building the bridge and future tasks presented by officials.

Special attention should be paid to completion of the project in the designated period and ensuring work site safety, said the commander.

The total length of the bridge including the two approach roads is 8,544 feet Rock laying of the motor-way on the main bridge was completed and tarring of the road is in progress.

(6) Minister meets Philippine Ambassador

YANGON, 1 July – Minister for Education U Than Aung met with Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady, who had completed her tour of duties here, at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Third Secretary of the Embassy of the Philippines Ms Belinda M Ante and officials of the Ministry of Education.

(7) Minister meets President of Sanwa Trading Co

YANGON, 1 July – Minister at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met President of Sanwa Trading Co Ltd of Japan Mr. Satoshi Kambe and party at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were officials of the Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(8) Minister addresses Central Committee to Control and Combat AIDS meeting

YANGON, 1 July – The Central Committee to Control and Combat AIDS held its Meeting No 1/99 at the Medical Research Department this afternoon with an address by Chairman of the Central Committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

In his address, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said the Central Committee to Control and Combat AIDS was formed in 1989 and guidelines were given for implementation of the project for control and elimination of AIDS.

He spoke of reorganization of the Central Committee in 1998 for more consolidation and effectiveness, and holding of the Central Committee meeting twice in 1998, the second one being organized after reorganization of the Central Committee.

He said the purpose of the Meeting No 1/99 was to discuss the implementation of tasks upon the minutes of the previous meeting, AIDS in Myanmar today, progress of work in the projects and laying down of guidelines for future tasks, among others.

The minister dealt with rapid spread of AIDS in South and South-East Asia regions, and noted that after Africa, the disease is spreading most in South-East Asia, which has about seven million AIDS victims, according to the WHO provisional data.

Myanmar, a South-East Asian nation, is cooperating with other nations of the region to fight the deadly disease, he said and added Myanmar is also collaborating and participating actively in the ASEAN AIDS control regional work project through exchange of information, organizing meetings and cooperation.

He said AIDS project of he Ministry of Health has been expanded year after year with the government's support and the UN agencies assistance and noted one of the most remarkable accomplishments was installation of HIV test kits at all township hospitals.

(9) Basic computer course concludes

YANGON, 1 July – Basic Computer Course 1/99 jointly organized by the Economic Group of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs and Cooperative Department concluded at the Ministry of Cooperatives this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, heads of department under the ministry, members of MNWCWA and guests. Making a speech on the occasion, Minister U Aung San said today endeavors are being made for emergence of a peaceful, tranquil, modern and developed nation, and computer science is a subject to learn at the age of Information Tech Adviser to the Committee Dr Daw Yi Yi Hla also made a speech.

Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti and officials of the Committee presented certificates to trainees and Daw Yi Yi Hla gave a prize to outstanding trainee Ma Thiri Mon. A total of 48 trainees attended the six-week course.

(10) Minister, officials hold meeting on XX SEA Games

YANGON, 1 July – A coordination meeting of Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win and presidents and officials of sports federations on XX SEA Games took place at the National Indoor Stadium-1 this afternoon.

Also present were Vice-Chairman of MOC Vice- Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General-Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials.

Making a speech on the occasion, Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win said it is vital for uplifting the prestige of the nation through the of sports and that is why only athletes who are sure to win prizes for the State will be sent to the SEA Games.

Also present were Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Col Thaung Htaik and officials.

The minister presented prizes to trainees who were outstanding in the course and certificates to trainees through officials. A total of 66 trainees attended the course.

(11) Work coordinated to hold Tenth National Mottos and Literary and Photograph Competition

YANGON, 1 July – The Committee for Organizing Tenth National Mottos and Literary and Photograph Competition held the first coordination meeting in the meeting hall of Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road this morning.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein, directors-general and managing directors, directors, deputy directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, officials of No 3 Basic Education Department and Higher Education Department, officials of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and guests.

(12) Minister leaves for 17th ASEAN Energy Ministers meeting

YANGON, 1 July – A delegation led by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi left here by air this morning to attend the 17th ASEAN Energy Ministers meeting to be held on 3 July in Bangkok, Thailand.

It was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pansak Chalarak and heads of departments of Ministry of Energy Member of the delegation accompanying Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi is Assistant Director U Tin Zaw Myint of Energy Planning Department.

(13) Minister meets officials of Japanese companies

YANGON, 1 Jul – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met with Chairman of San Ei Regulator Co Ltd Mr Noboru Korosaki and Mr Mikio Mochizuki of Nihon Sogyo Co Ltd and party of Japan at his office this afternoon.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Industry-l Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Industry-l.

(14) English for Occupational Purposes Course and English Proficiency Course opened at MRTV

YANGON, 1 July – English for Occupational Purposes Course and English Proficiency Course of Myanma Radio TV opened this morning at MRTV, addressed by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein.

The deputy minister said information technology and equipment are advancing with high momentum in the world at present; as the developing countries are not able to fully reach the advanced information systems, the developed nations are manipulating the media in launching propaganda wars on small countries; staff of the information sector have the duty to ward off all perpetrations of some big nations; and they should strive to acquire skills which meet global standard to carry out their duty effectively.

Thus, various courses are being conducted to enhance the qualification of the staff of the five departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Information; the two courses which opened today are the part of this programme; and staff of MRTV should be proficient in English which is an international language.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General of MRTV . U Khin Maung Htay, directors, course instructors and trainees.

Fifteen trainees are attending the English for Occupational Purposes Course and another 21, the English Proficiency Course.

(15) Day-care Centre of Ministry of Industry-2 MCWA opens

YANGON, 1 July – The opening ceremony of the day care centre of Maternal and Child Welfare Association of the Ministry of Industry-2 was held at the centre in the compound of No 1 Automobile Plant of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar MCWA Chief Medical Officer of Ministry of Industry-2 Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and officials.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe made a speech on the occasion and formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Daw Moe Moe Myint, chairperson of Ministry of Industry-2 MCWA, formally opened the day-care centre. They then presented gifts to the children of the centre.

(16) Mayor inspects drilling of tube-wells

YANGON, 1 July – Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay inspected drilling of test tube-wells to supply drinking water to Dalla Township in Yangon Division and fish farming project of YCDC in Twantay Township this morning.

Accompanied by officials, the Mayor visited drilling of the test tube- wells near Yangonpauk village in Dalla Township.

Engineers reported on progress of work, situation of water pumped out from the wells and plans to supply water to the town.

The Mayor gave suggestions. He attended the ceremony to mark the beginning of monsoon paddy cultivation on 52 acres at a farm near the fish breeding station of YCDC at Kyaikthale village-tract in Twantay Township.

At the briefing hall of the station, officials reported on functions of the station. The Mayor gave suggestions.

(17) 15300 stimulant tablets seized in Kachin State

YANGON, 1 July – A team comprising members of regional Defence Sever ices Intelligence unit, Tatmadaw members and Myanmar Police Force members seized 15,300 stimulant tablets from Haw Myint Kyo son of U Haw Law Kya, of Monwan Village, Tamoehnye Village, Phakant Kutkai Shan State, on 15 June Hmawshan Village Phakant Kachin State.

The authorities, acting on information, stopped the man and searched him at the place.

Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(18) 351 members resign from Kyauktan Township NLD

YANGON, 1 July – A total of 351 members of two villages and four wards in Kyauktan Township of National League for Democracy collectively resigned from the party on 30 June.

Letters of resignations of-106 persons from Padagyi village, 44 from Shwepyauk village, 25 from Ayemyathida ward, 38 from Shwepyithaya ward, 131 from Myaingthaya ward and seven from Thidamyaing ward-were presented to Chairman of Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Sub-Commission U Lu Maw through the representatives.

U Win Htay of NLD of Padagyi village, Padagyi Station, and U Tin Nwe of NLD of Myaingthaya ward explained the purpose of their resignation at the ceremony to submit letters of resignation which was held at Padagyi village at 7 am yesterday.

Also present on the occasion were local people of the two villages and four wards and surrounding villages totaling 850.
