(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Canada

YANGON, 1 July – Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to the Right Honourable Mr Romeo LeBlanc, Governor-General of Canada, on the occasion of the National Day of Canada which falls on 1 July 1999.

(2)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Argentina

YANGON, 30 June – Mr Carlos Faustino Garcia, newly accredited Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thura U Aung Htet.

YANGON, 30 June – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met officials of Yangon City Development Committee and gave instructions to them at the City Hall this afternoon.

Mayor U Ko Lay reported on the present set-up of YCDC, and the strength of staff, the improvement of the boundary of Yangon City area, the annual growth rate of population, the urban people's disposal of garbage and condition of collecting garbage, building and repair of roads and bridges in the city, water supply of Yangon City, building of modern markets, greening works, income and expenditure of the committee, agricultural and livestock breeding works and general matters.

(4)  Deputy Prime Minister meets President of Myanmar Pongpipat Co

YANGON, 30 June – Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met President of Myanmar Pongpipat Co Ltd Mr Sompong Chavaltanpipat and party who called at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and officials.

They discussed bilateral co-operation in mining sector and investment opportunities in Myanmar.

(5)  Second cash donation ceremony for eye patients in Kyaukse

YANGON, 30 June – The second cash donation ceremony for eye patients was held at Sibinthayayay Hall in Kyaukse Township on 28 June afternoon.

First, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint explained about the donation.

Then, on behalf of the well-wishers Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services; Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint presented K 200,000 to Chairman of Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein.

The donations included -K 100,000 each by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council, Magway Division Peace and Development Council, Mandalay City Development Committee, Director of Mandalay Division Forest Department Lt-Col Ko Ko and wife Daw Khin Nwe Nwe and family and Khaing Myanmar Credit Society, and others.

Officials accepted the K 963,500 donated by well-wishers at the second cash donation ceremony.

Donations amounting to K 2,109,300 were accepted at the first cash donations ceremony.

Now, 198 eye patients from Mandalay and Kyaukse Districts and six patients from NyaungU District have been treated.

After the ceremony, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party paid obeisance to new Shwehtidaw of Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha at Aukgyaint Ward in Sukone Tract, Kyaukse.

(6)  National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 30 June – National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the meeting hall of the commission this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by Commission Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and members.

Maj-Gen Saw Lwin delivered a speech.

National Convention Work Committee and Management Committee reported on the National Convention. Members of the commission took part in the discussions.

Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported on requirements and the meeting ended in the evening.

(7)  Seminar on leprosy education held

YANGON, 30 June – The Ministry of Health and Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association co-sponsored a seminar on leprosy education at MMCWA Headquarters this afternoon.

Prior to the seminar, ultrasound equipment provided by Grassroots Grant Assistance of Japan were distributed to Township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations.

Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained plans to distribute ultrasound equipment to township associations to conduct maternal and child health care work with the assistance of the Ministry of Health.

She then presented the machines to associations in Yangon, Mandalay, Pyapon, Maubin, Kengtung, Tachilek, Kalay, Myeik, Kawthoung, Haka and Myitkyina.

Later, the seminar began with the opening address delivered by Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

The minister said efforts are under way to wipe out leprosy disease from the nation by the year 2000. The ministry will strive to reduce the number of leprosy infected persons to one per every 10,000 to remove leprosy from the public health problems.

There are now only over 10,000 leprosy patients in Myanmar down from over 200,000 in 1987. The ministry is exposing and giving treatment from 6,000 to 10,000 leprosy patients per year. MMCWA should take part in controlling the disease, he said.

The seminar continued then.

(8)  84 members resign from Palaw Township NLD

YANGON, 30 June – Eighty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Palaw Township, Taninthayi Division.

Eighty-four members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Palaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 19 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Minister meets timber entrepreneurs

YANGON, 30 June – Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone met entrepreneurs dealing in wood-based industries at the Myanma Timber Enterprise this afternoon.

The minister explained about wood-based value-added products, export promotion of the forestry sector and development of border trade.

Also present on the occasion were officials of joint-venture corporations, timber merchants and heads of department under the ministry and officials.

He spoke of boosting of wood-based products in border areas and export, promotion of foreign investments, border trade development through finished forest products, timely completion of timber extraction and programmes to be carried out and assistance to be provided to the entrepreneurs.

(10)  Minister meets Malaysian paper mill director

YANGON, 30 June – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Director Mr Lee See Jin and party of Nibong Tebal Paper Mill Sdn Bhd of Malaysia who called at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and heads of departments under the ministry.

(11)  Means sought to boost paddy production in Shan State (East)

YANGON, 30 June – Officials sought means to boost paddy production in ten townships of Shan State (East), to grow more high yield strains and to use Effective Microorganism fertilizers at the Triangle Region Command Headquarters on 25 June.

Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein gave a speech.

On 26 June, the commander addressed a ceremony to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking in Kengtung.

The commander and an official presented gifts to students who won prizes in essay and painting contests on anti-narcotics and members of Myanmar Police Force for the outstanding performance in the anti-narcotic campaigns.

(12)  Appointment of Indonesian Ambassador agreed on

YANGON, 1 July – The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr Nasaruddin Mochtar Koro as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Indonesia to the Union of Myanmar.

Mr Nasaruddin Mochtar Koro was born in 1940. the obtained Economic degree from the University of Indonesia and MA degree from the University of Westminster. He Joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in, 1969 and served in various capacities at the Indonesian Embassies and consulates in Singapore, Praha, Houston, Hamburg and London. He was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur from 1995 to 1998.

(13)  Minister for Commerce meets Ambassador of Argentina

YANGON, 30 June – Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Ambassador of Republic of Argentina Mr Carlos Faustino Garcia at his office at 3 pm today.

They discussed bilateral economic, trade and investment co-operation between the two countries.

Also present on the occasion were advisers, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye and officials.

(14)  Minister for Cooperatives meets Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON, 30 June – Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San met Ambassador of Republic of the Philippines Mrs Sonia Cataumber Brady who has completed her tour of duties here, at his office this afternoon.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General of Cooperatives Department U Maung Hti, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department Col Sein Than, General Manager of Cooperatives Export and Import Enterprise U Myo Than, Adviser Dr Than Htaik and officials of the ministry.

Rainfall on 30-6-99 was 1mm (0.04 inch) at Yangon Airport, 9mm (0.36 inch) at Kaba-Aye and 33mm (1.30 inches) at central Yangon.

Total rainfall since 1 January 1999 was 1157mm (45.55 inches) at Yangon Airport, 1514mm (59.61 inches) at Kaba-Aye and 1712mm (67.40 inches) at central Yangon.
