(1) Eighth cash donation ceremony held for Maha Thantithukha Buddhist Missionary Kyaungdawyi

YANGON, 28 June – The eighth cash donation ceremony for building of Maha Thantithukha Buddhist Missionary Kyaungdawgyi was held at the Kyaungdawgyi, Natchaung Ward, Tarmway Township, this morning.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and accepted the cash donations.

Secretary of the Leading Committee for Construction of Maha Thantithukha Buddhist Missionary Kyaungdawgyi Director-General of the Department of Human Settlement.

U Arnt Kyaw reported on arrangements for opening the Kyaungdawgyi as scheduled, Managing Director of Asia World Construction U Tun Myint Naing on progress of construction work, Chairman of Fund-Raising Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa on condition of funds and U Saw Myint on the purpose of building the Kyaungdawgyi, overseas missionary works of Penang/Singapore Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannavamsa and arrangements for raising the funds of the Kyaungdawgyi.

The Secretary-1 said Maha Thantithukha Buddhist Missionary Kyaungdawgyi is a place where respective subjects will be taught practically to missionary Sayadaws and members of the Sangha with a view to enabling them to carry out their tasks abroad.

Penang/Singapore Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannavamsa is carrying out missionary tasks abroad by constructing religious buildings.

In accord with the ardent desire of the Sayadaw, the Kyaungdawgyi is being built with a view to teaching matters related to missionary tasks to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha who will discharge the duty of Sasana propagation at missionary monasteries from abroad.

Construction of the Kyaungdawgyi is a mammoth task, and therefore, the Government is taking the lead in building it with the contributions of the well-wishers.

It is learnt that there are well-wishers who come to make cash donations out of sheer generosity due to news about the Kyaungdawgyi appearing on TV and radio and in the dailies, and it is necessary to make arrangements to enable well-wishers to conveniently make cash donations for the Kyaungdawgyi.

The progress which has been made in building the Kyaungdawgyi in two years' time, can be ascribed to the efforts of respective subcommittees.

Though there are difficulties, if respective subcommittees continue to work at the present rate, the objectives will be accomplished.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 thanked the well-wishers. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Mayor U Ko Lay and Col Thein Nyunt accepted the donations in cash and kind which included a Buddha image valued at K 900,000 by Maj Wai Lin Aung (Retired) of Myanma Timber Enterprise and Sculptor U Hla Myint and wife of Hsemyaung Street, Ward 45, North Dagon, K 30 million by Yangon City Development Committee for the eighth time, K 300,000 by the Ministry of Construction, K l00,000 each by Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs and Ministry of Mines, K 8.5 million to be used for the purchase of two lifts by Penang/Singapore Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannavamsa for the second time, over K 1.074 million by Abbot of Myanmar Kyaungdawgyi of Singapore Bhaddanta Tilokasiri, K 500,000 by member of Upathaka U Zaw Min-Daw Win Pa Pa, K 300,000 by Daw Hla Yin and family of Letkhoakgon Village, Toungoo District, K 120,000 by Director-General of Timber Enterprise U Sein Maung Wint (Retired)-Daw Khin Hla and family, K 200,000 by departments under Yangon City Development Committee and other cash donations totaling over K 48.284 million.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party inspected progress of work in building the Kyaungdawgyi.

(2) Secretary-1 views Nepalese cultural show

YANGON, 28 June – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended a cultural show presented by the Nepalese cultural delegation led by Mr Harihar Sharma who arrived here under the cultural exchange programme between Nepal and Myanmar, at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road this evening.

Ambassador of Nepal to the Union of Myanmar Mr Satchit Shumshere JB Rana extended greetings.

Members of the Nepalese delegation presented variety traditional songs and dances .After the show, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented the flower basket of honour to the delegation. Then, Secretary Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt together with the Nepalese delegation had documentary photo taken.

(3) Indian NDC delegation calls on Chief of Armed Forces Training

YANGON, 28 June – The delegation led by Shri B Jaishankan of Indian National Defence College called on Defence Services Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

Also present at the call were Commandant of National Defence College of the Union of Myanmar Maj-Gen San Aung and senior military officers.

The Indian delegation was accompanied by Military Attache of the Indian Embassy Col Jasbir Singh.

Then, the Indian delegation went to the National Defence College and called on Commandant Maj-Gen San Aung. The delegation members signed in the visitors' book and visited classrooms, the library and exhibition of the college.

Commandant Maj-Gen San Aung extended greetings and explained facts about the college with the video tapes to the delegation at Anawrahta Hall.

Then, Col Ye Htut of the Ministry of Defence, Police Col Kham Aung of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Deputy Director-General U Aung Bwa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Director-General Daw Than Nwe of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development explained facts about the respective ministries.

Afterwards, they exchanged souvenirs. The delegation, accompanied by Lt-Col Kyaw Myint of the National Defence College, visited Defence Services Museum. Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut conducted them round there.

Afterwards, the delegation went to King Zafar Shah's Tomb on Ziwaka Street in Dagon Township. They then visited Shwedagon Pagoda and made donations towards the pagoda fund.

(4) Minister inspects dams and reservoirs

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, together with officials, inspected the grape orchard in NyaungU yesterday morning, and gave instructions on the growing of grapes of high quality.

The minister and party went to Myakan Reservoir, and inspected the inflow of water, the main embankment and the water control tower.

The minister also inspected the cultivation of sesamum and pigeon pea along the road.

The minister arrived at Kyetmauktaung Dam in Kyaukpadaung Township.

He gave instructions on systematic control of water inflow and water supply for agriculture.

Then, the minister went to the field where summer paddy is cultivated with the water supplied from Kyetmauktaung Dam.

He met farmers and gave instructions on timely harvesting of summer paddy and cultivation of another crop of paddy.

A total of 500 acres of land out of the area irrigated by Kyetmauktaung Dam, has been put under summer paddy.

The minister proceeded to Pin Creek Reservoir which has been put into service recently in Kyaukpadaung Township.

The minister inspected the inflow of water, the main embankment, the water control tower and the spillway.

In the afternoon, the minister, together with Commander of No 99 LID Brig-Gen Htay Oo, went to Taungpulu Lake in Meiktila Township, and inspected the water inflow and water supply.

Next, they proceeded to Thabyeyoe Reservoir linking with Taungpulu Lake, and inspected the already-built main embankment, the water control tower and the sluice gate.

The minister later inspected the sluice gate and the network of irrigation canals of Inyin Dam built on Thinmon Creek in 1928-29.

Then, he inspected the water inflow and the banks of Alaungsithu Lake.

In the evening, the minister and party visited the construction site of Detaw Dam on Nyaungok Creek near Thamankan Village, Nahtogyi Township, which can irrigate 4,000 acres of field.

The minister also inspected cultivation of sesamum in Yitkan Village, Myittha Township, and urged local farmers to grow sesamum which can be put on the market.

The minister and party proceeded to the construction site of Thittetkon Diversion Weir on Samon Creek near Thittetkon Village, Myittha Township, which can irrigate 5,000 acres of field.

(5) MIC Chairman, Vice-Chairman inspect poultry farm, animal feed factory

YANGON, 28 June – Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Vice-Chairman of MIC Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun today inspected the poultry farm run by Myanmar citizens with the permission of MIC in Hmawby Township, and the animal feed factory at Ywathagyi in Dagon Myothit (East) and gave necessary instructions to the officials.

Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, accompanied by Secretary of MIC Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials, arrived at the poultry farm of Myanmar citizens' Maykha Industries Limited at Kalagon Village on Yangon-Pyay Road in Hmawby Township of Yangon North District this afternoon.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Managing Director of Maykha Industries Ltd Dr Ye Naing Win, members of the Board of Directors and staff.

Afterwards, they heard reports on the investment, plans to distribute eight million chickens every year, modern poultry farming, and production and distribution of the feedstuff presented to them by Managing Director of Maykha Industries Ltd Dr Ye Naing Win and Managing Director of Myanmar Jupfa Maykha Trading Ltd Mr Wahjudi Gu Nawan.

After giving suggestions, they went round in the farm.

They proceeded to the animal feed factory of Maykha Industries Ltd in Ywathagyi, Dagon Myothit (East).

They were welcomed there by Factory Manager Maj Aung Zaw Myint (Retired) and staff. They later went round in the factory, which is producing 8-11 tons of animal feed per hour, and left necessary instructions.

(6) Minister receives Japanese delegation

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Mr Sekimoto of Yangon-based Tomen Corporation and party at 10.30 am and Member of the House of Representatives, Diet of Japan Mr Koya Nishikawa and party, accompanied by Takanezawa Town Mayor Mr Katsunori Takahashi and Counselor Mr Naokiti of Japanese Embassy at 3.15 pm at his office respectively today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and departmental heads under the ministry.

(7) Minister meets Managing Director of C M P Products

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Managing Director of C M P Products Co Ltd of Thailand Mr Paisan Chareoncharutkun and party who called at his office at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

(8) Commander inspects land reclamation, maintenance of roads, bridges

YANGON, 28 June – Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by officials, inspected the land reclamation being undertaken by Aungshwehti Agriculture Group in lower Kanyinmyaung Forest reserve area in DaikU Township yesterday morning.

Director Major Myint Win (retired) of Aungshwehti Agriculture Group of Honshin Company reported on arrangements being made by the companies in lower Kanyinmyaung reserve area, reclamation of 500 vacant and virgin land, completion of cultivation and works to be done.

The commander gave instructions on works, attended to the needs and inspected paddy cultivation.

Afterwards, the commander and party inspected cultivation of paddy, sugarcane and kitchen crops on either side of Kawliya Creek by boat. In the afternoon, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye inspected repair of bridges and maintenance of roads on his way from DaikU to Bago.

(9) Means sought for progress of agriculture in Kachin State

YANGON, 28 June – Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win held discussions with farmers on 22 June at Einlin village in Bhamo Township to boost monsoon paddy cultivation.

The commander gave a speech. Farmers put forward requirements.

Accompanied by officials, the commander visited patients warded at the Mansi Township People's Hospital and also gave instructions to staff.

At Township Peace and Development Council Office, the commander met with departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, attending to needs presented by the participants. At the Bhamo District Peace and Development Council Office, the commander met with local authorities, Kachin State/District/Township Agricultural Supervisory Committees and departmental personnel.

In Momauk Township, he held a meeting with departmental personnel. On 24 June, the commander inspected repair of the runway of Bhamo Airport.

(10) Paper-reading session on Myanmar economic development and future development strategy begins

YANGON, 28 June – A paper-reading session on Myanmar economic development and future development strategy sponsored by study group of Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy of the Ministry of Finance of Japan was held at Sedona Hotel this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, senior officials of Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, Ministry of Industry-1, Ministry of Industry-2, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Office of Strategic Studies, Central Bank-of Myanmar and Institute of Economics, Chairman of Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy Mr Makita Fukuda and members.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel made a speech and Mr Makita Fukuda extended greetings.

YANGON, 28 June – Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint met a delegation led by Japanese House of Representatives member Mr Koya Nishikawa who called at his office at 2 pm today.

(12) Minister for Culture inspects renovation of Yawmingyi Brick Monastery in Mandalay

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Culture U Win Sein inspected renovation of Yawmingyi Brick Monastery, west of Mandalay Hill in Aungmye-thazan Township on 27 June.

The minister was welcomed by Chairman of Renovation Committee Lt-Col Than Soe and officials.

The minister inspected renovation of the monastery and fulfilled the requirements.

The brick monastery was built in 1228 Myanmar Era by Yawmingyi U Po Hlaing with the combination of European and Myanmar architecture in the reign of King Mindon. It was donated to Maha Bo Sayadaw and was destroyed by fire in 1303 ME.

The minister and party went to Mandalay Cultural Museum and inspected ancient objects, artifacts excavated in Tagaung and Hanlin ancient cities and cultural and archaeological items there. The minister also inspected the library.

(13) Minister leaves for 21st Special Session of UNGA

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun left here by air yesterday to attend the 21st Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly to be held from 30 June to 2 July in New York, United States of America.

He was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, directors general, deputy directors general and directors of departments under the Ministry and their relatives.

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met General Manager of Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co Ltd of Japan Mr Masaki Furuya and party who called at his office at 9 am today.

Also present at the call was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(15) Minister for Transport inspects airport facilities in Bagan-NyaungU

YANGON, 28 June – Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than and officials, arrived at Thiripyitsaya Hotel Jetty, Bagan, on 26 June.

Deputy Minister U Pe Than briefed the minister and party on siltage near the hotel, regular flow of water into the hotel, progress of work and works being undertaken.

The minister and party proceeded to Lawkananda Pagoda Jetty and inspected retaining walls, development of the jetty, work to prevent erosion and left necessary instructions to officials.

Afterwards, the minister and party arrived at Bagan NyaungU Airport on 27 June and looked into facilities of the airport including greening of its environs, water supply system, tickets counters and lounge and gave suggestions to officials.

(16) "Love Malaysia and Trade Fair 1999" explained

YANGON, 28 June – A delegation led by Chairman Kerk Loong Sing of Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Malaysia Consumer and Trade Fair '99 (KLSCCI) explained "Love Malaysia and Trade Fair 1999" at the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Office on Merchant Street this morning.

Secretary of UMFCCI U Zaw Min Win delivered a speech. Chairman Kerk Loong Sing explained about the trade fair.

Altogether 80 entrepreneurs were present.

YANGON, 28 June – CEC member of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Sein Win Hlaing and Dr Khin Maung arrived back here yesterday after attending the BIMST-EC Business Forum held in Thailand from 24 to 25 June.

(18) 65 members resign from Monyo Township NLD

YANGON, 28 June – Sixty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Sixty-five members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(19) National Achieves Department holds workshop

YANGON, 28 June – A workshop on archive management No 1/99 of National Archives Department of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development was opened this afternoon at NAD.

Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun gave a speech.

Also present on the occasion were directors-general and directors of the departments under the ministry, resource persons and officials of NAD.

(20) Paper-reading session held on women & men related to HIV/AIDS

YANGON, 28 June – A paper-reading session on women and men related to HIV/AIDS, in Kengtung Township Shan State (East) organized by Psychology Department of Yangon University, was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning. Present on the occasion were members of CARE (Myanmar), personnel of NGOs, faculty members of YU and guests.

Honorary Professor of Psychology Department of YU Dr Kyaw Sein gave an Opening speech.

Professor Daw Khin Aye Win presented a paper on women and men related to HIV/AIDS in Kengtung Township, Shan State (East). Then, participants took part in the discussions.
