(1) Secretary-l attends cornerstone laying ceremony of Aung Mingala Maha Theindawayi

YANGON, 27 June - A cornerstone laying ceremony of Aung Mingalar Maha Theindawgyi was held in Mingaladon Garden City this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Chairman of Zaygabar Co Ltd U Khin Shwe reported on construction of Aung Mingalar Maha Zedi and Aung Mingalar Maha Theindaw.

The Secretary-1 and party took the designated places. The Secretary-1 laid the nine gem silver-casket.

Next, donor Daw Khin Thein laid the golden casket.

At the auspicious time, the Secretary-1, Ministers Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and well-wisher Daw Khin Thein and her families laid the foundation.

The Secretary-1 then placed stone inscription in the foundation.

The Secretary-1 and party sprayed scented water. They then performed rituals of golden and silver shower to mark the success of the ceremony.

In memory of late Lt-Gen Sein Aung (Retd), Aung Mingalar Maha Theindawgyi will be built by well-wisher Daw Khin Thein and sons and daughters.

The Secretary-1 and party planted Bo tree donated by Kyaikhtihsaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannadipa.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects works for all-round perpetual renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 27 June - Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the construction works for all-round renovation of the pagoda this afternoon.

First, the Secretary-1 and party revered the Jade Buddha and Shwezedi.

At the Old Museum Tazaung, Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint reported to them on the works for hoisting of the Shwehtidaw and gilding of the pagoda, progress of work in 36 tasks for all-round perpetual renovation of the pagoda, reconstruction and renovation of the religious buildings on the pagoda platform.

(3) Secretary-l attends ground-breaking ceremony for Abayanantajina Sasanalinkara Shwemyodaw Pagoda

YANGON, 27 June - A ground-breaking ceremony for Abayanantajina Sasanalinkawra Shwemyodaw Pagoda was held at the designated place in Mingaladon Garden City this morning.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and drove a stake.

Chairman of Zay Kaba Company Ltd Dr Khin Shwe explained matters related to the site chosen for the pagoda.

The Secretary-1 and party took respective places.

The Secretary-1, Ministers Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, U Aung San, U Win Aung, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Attorney-General U Tha Tun and U San Maung drove stakes at the designated places.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party sprinkled scented water on the stakes.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party performed rites of gold and silver showers.

(4) Secretary-1 receives Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia

YANGON, 27 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia Dato Haji Annuar Haji Musa and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at noon today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Mohamad bin Noh.

(5) Minister hosts dinner for Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia

YANGON, 27 June - Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia Dato Haji Annuar Haji Musa and party currently here at the invitation of Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Mohamad bin Noh, Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin and officials, visited Hlawga Fisheries Station in Mingaladon Township this morning.

They were welcomed by Deputy Director-General of Fisheries Department U Hla Win and officials.

Then, Deputy Director-General U Hla Win and Assistant Director U Khin Ko Lay explained about the history of Hlawga Fisheries Station, production and its functions to the guest minister at the guest hall.

Officials conducted the visiting minister and delegation round the station.

The minister and party left there at 9.30 am.

Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and wife Daw Kyin Khaing hosted dinner in honour of Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia Dato Haji Annuar Haji Musa and wife and party at Karaweik Palace in the evening.

Artistes entertained, the guests with the Myanmar traditional dances and songs.

(6) Nepalese delegation visits pagodas, National Museum

YANGON, 27 June - The visiting Nepalese cultural delegation led by Mr Harihar Sharma which arrived here under the arrangement of cultural exchange programme between Nepal and Myanmar, accompanied by Assistant Director U Tin Hla Thein of Fine Arts Department, paid obeisance to Shwedagon and Maha Wizaya Pagodas this morning.

The delegation then visited Pyidaungsu Ayeyeiknyein.

At 2 pm, members of the delegation visited the National Museum of the Department of Cultural Institute. Director (Museum) Daw Nu Mra Zan conducted them round the museum.

In the evening, Director-General U Tin Htoo of Fine Arts Department hosted dinner at the National Theatre in honour of the Nepalese delegation.

(7) Indian National Defence College delegation arrives

YANGON, 27 June - A 16 member delegation led by Shri B Jaishankan of National Defence College of India arrived here by air this evening.

The Indian delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung and senior military officers, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of India Mr Shyram Saran and Military Attache Col Jasbir Singh.

(8) Well-wishers donate over K 2m for construction of Maha Bodi Pagoda in Wellington, New Zealand

YANGON, 27 June-A ceremony to donate cash towards the fund of Maha Bodi Pagoda dedicated in Wellington, New Zealand, was held at Kalaywa Tawya Sarthintaik on Naga Cave Hill this morning.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Dwipitakadhara Dwipitakakovida Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Kalaywa Tawya Sayadaw Bhaddanta Jagarabhivamsa and members of the Sangha, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Director-General U Arnt Maung of Religious Affairs Department, Chairman of Wellington Therava Buddhist Missionary Association U Dennis Win Thein and family, well-wishers and guests.

First, U Dennis Win Thein supplicated on construction of the pagoda in Wellington, New Zealand.

Then, Minister U Than Aung and officials accepted K 2.173 million donated by 26 well-wishers including K 500,000 by Thiri Thudhamma Manijotadhara Shwebin Ngwebin U Than Tun-Daw Aye Myint and family, K 500,000 by Meidaw Nandawin (PyinOoLwin), K 200,000 by U Kyaw Kyaw Hlaing-Daw Thazin Nyunt and family, K 100,000 each by U Khin Maung Ohn-Daw Tin Tin Su and family, U Kaythi Han and Ma Theingi Han of Wellington, U Myo Myint-Daw Khin Nyo Win and family, U Tin Daw Hla May and family and Tawwin Hninhsi U Soe Nyunt and family.

The minister and officials presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.

After the ceremony, U Dennis Win Thein, Daw Than Than Ohn and family offered 'soon' to 924 members of the Sangha.

(9) Commander inspects rubber plantations, sugar mill

YANGON, 27 June - Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, accompanied by staff officers, inspected rubber plantations being worked for welfare of Kengtung Station on 22 June morning.

The commander inspected cultivation of rubber plants, clearing of weeds and cultivation of groundnut and gave instructions on extended cultivation of rubber plants.

Then, the commander and party inspected preparations for cultivation of sugarcane and gave necessary instructions.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein inspected soybean, groundnut and maize plantations.

Afterwards, the commander and party inspected Shan Yoma sugar mill.

He heard report by the in-charge officer of the mill and gave instructions on work.

(10) Htidaw hoisting, consecration ceremony held at Bagan ancient pagoda No 1815

YANGON, 27 June - The Htidaw hoisting and consecration ceremony was held at Bagan ancient pagoda No 1815 on Bagan Myohaung Road in NyaungU District, Mandalay Division, yesterday.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, directors-general; managing-directors, the principal and well-wishers.

First, the minister and party sprinkled scented water on the pagoda and closed the reliquary.

At 7.30 am, a ceremony to enshrine the pagoda was held at the venue. Then, Bagan Thatbyinnyu Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Naninda administered the Nine Precepts.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe supplicated on religious affairs.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, wife and family, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw and officials donated provisions to the Sayadaws.

Member of the State Central Working Committee of the Shangha Gukyaung Sayadaw of NyaungU Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Jagara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

The minister, deputy ministers, officials and well-wishers conveyed Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw, Hsatthaphudaw and nine tiers of Shwehtidaw and went round the pagoda.

Then, the congregation hoisted the Seinphudaw atop the pagoda.

After the ceremony, the minister and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.

(11) Commander inspects renovation of Yawmingyi Brick Monastery

YANGON, 27 June - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Lt-Col Tin Ohn and Chairman of Mandalay District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Tun, inspected renovation of Yawmingyi Brick Monastery in Aungmyaythazan Township on 25 June afternoon.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspected construction of concrete pillars and laying of concrete on the ground floor and the first floor.

Lt-Col Than Soe, Director (Upper Myanmar) of Department of Archaeology U Wai Lwin conducted the commander round the monastery.

The commander gave necessary instructions.

(12) International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed in Sittway

YANGON, 27 June - The talks, exhibition and essay, poetry, cartoon, painting and poster competition prize presentation ceremony in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking were held at U Uttama Hall in Sittway, Rakhine State, yesterday.

Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe made a speech.

Rakhine State Police Col Aye Ko read out the message sent by the Chairman of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control.

Police Lt-Col Myint Thein of Rakhine State Myanmar Police Force, Specialist Dr Daw Mya Aye of Rakhine State Health Department, Rakhine State Law Officer U Chit Swe and Police Capt Khin Maung Soe of the Special Anti-Drug Squad gave talks on various topics.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and officials presented prizes to the winners in the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking commemorative essay, poetry, cartoon, painting and poster competitions.

(13) Minister for Commerce meets Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia

YANGON, 27 June - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia Dato Haji Annuar Haji Musa and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

They discussed bilateral economic co-operation and investment opportunities between the two countries.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, advisers, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Saw Aung and departmental officials.

(14) 31 members resign from Gyobingauk Township NLD

YANGON, 27 June - Thirty-one members-resigned from the National League for Democracy of Gyobingauk Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-four members of Gyobingauk Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Gyobingauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 30 May 1999 and seven members followed suit on 7 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(15) 41 members resign from Kyaikto Township NLD

YANGON, 27 June - Forty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaikto Township, Mon State.

Forty-one members of Kyaikto Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaikto Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 12 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
