(1)  Myanmar delegation studies agriculture and irrigation projects in Iran

YANGON, 24 June – Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin attended the ministerial meeting on progress of the agriculture sector and poverty elimination in Asian region sponsored by FAO in Bangkok on 14 and 15 June.

The meeting discussed the tasks of the agriculture ministries in the countries making economic reforms and plans for development of each country and the entire Asian region in the forthcoming century.

(2)  Minister visits offices of Development Affairs Department

YANGON, 24 June – Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, together with officials, paid homage to Bhaddanta Kusala at Kaing-kon Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Tangyan on 22 June morning.

The minister and party offered alms to missionary nuns at Shwemaung Sasana Waibonla Nunnery Sarthintaik and to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Wunnadhaja at Wailuwon Pariyatti Sarthintaik.

Then, the minister and party inspected the office of Tangyan Township Development Affairs Department.

Next, they went to the school for progress of national youths, and presented school uniforms and stationery.

The minister and party inspected the offices of Township Development Affairs Department and met staff members in Hsibaw, Kyaukme, Nawnhkio and PyinOoLwin.

The minister and party, together with officials, inspected the park of PyinOoLwin Township Development Affairs Department, water supply, the growing of shade trees and flowering plants on the either side of roads in the township, the sinking of artisan well and the building of the embankment and the circular road.

Yesterday morning, the minister met authorities and departmental officials of Kyaukse District and Township and staff members of the development affairs department at the office of Township Development Affairs Department.

The minister gave instructions on works for making Kyaukse lush and green.

Next, the minister inspected sanitation works of Minye drain, the growing of shade trees and flowering plants on the either side of the roads and measures taken for making the town lush and green.

(3)  Ministers, dy ministers, senior officials of ASEAN countries leave

YANGON, 24 June – The Ministers, deputy ministers and senior officials of ASEAN member countries left here by air today after attending the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung.

Secretary of Leading Committee for Hosting the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win,Chief of Staff (Police) Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win, Ambassadors and officials of ASEAN member nations, embassies and senior police officers of MPF.

(4)  Minister meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 24 June – Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Director of Manteno Business Corporation of Indonesia Mr Rudy Phoa and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Similarly, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Executive Director of International Monetary Fund Mrs KeloThong Hetrakul who called at his office at 5 pm today.

Also present at the calls was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(5)  Minister for Transport arrives back from Singapore, Malaysia

YANGON, 24 June – Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe arrived back here by air this evening from Singapore and Malaysia after studying the function of container ships in two countries.

The minister was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Home Affair Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Ambassador of Singapore, directors-general, managing directors and principal of the ministry and relatives.

Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Airways U Tin Hlaing Hmi and Head of Division U Kyaw Kyaw Lwin of Myanma Port Authority also arrived back with the same flight.

(6)  Myanmar Women's Day Work Committee meets

YANGON, 24 June – Work Committee for Holding Myanmar Women's Day, which falls on 3 July, held a meeting at Social Welfare Department this afternoon.

Present at the meeting were Chairperson of the Work Committee Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, leaders of the subcommittees and others.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave a speech.

Various subcommittees reported on the arrangements for Myanmar Women's Day.

Participants then took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the chairperson of the Work Committee.

(7)  Minister inspects development works of border region in Shan State

YANGON, 24 June – The opening ceremony of the fourth Triangle Region Command Commander's Shield Soccer Tournament was held at the parade ground of the Command on 19 June evening.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein and wife, staff officers of the command, commanding officers of regional battalions and Kengtung Station and families.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein delivered the opening address and formally opened the tournament.

(8)  437 drug-related cases exposed in May

YANGON, 24 June – Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force and Customs Department exposed altogether 437 drug-related cases in May 1999.

They seized 98.766 kilos of opium in 26 cases, 11.6903 kilos of heroin in 154 cases, 31.6386 kilos of marijuana in 64 cases, 3.84 litres of :phensedyl in five cases, 1.34 kilos of opium oil in two cases, 1.4 kilos of low grade opium in 18 cases, 663,923 tablets of amphetamine in 41 cases, 392.29 kilos of amphidrin in 10 cases, 19.2 litres of cough syrup in three cases, 163.6 litres of acetic anhydride in two cases, 36.37 litres ether, and 7,387.35 litres of other chemicals, and exposed 95 cases for failure to register and 16 other cases.

Action was taken against 512 men and 126 women in those 437 cases.

(9)  Minister meets counterpart from Lao PDR

YANGON, 24 June – Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met Minister of Home Affairs of Lao People' s Democratic Republic Maj-Gen Asang Baoly and party who called at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.

Also present at the call were Delegates of LPDR who attended the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime and Police Col Kham Aung of Myanmar Police Force.

(10)  Deputy Minister inspects prawn and fish breeding works

YANGON, 24 June – Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, together with officials of the Fishery Department, visited the fish breeding station of Shwengagyin Livestock Production Cooperative Society in Kamarmet Village, Kayan Township, yesterday morning.

Chairman of the society U Soe Tint reported on facts about the station.

The deputy minister gave instructions on the works.

The deputy minister and party also inspected Aungthukha Fish Breeding Station and Prawn Spawning Station-2 jointly undertaken by Shwengagyin Livestock Production Cooperative Society, the Special Investigation Department and Bayintnaung Company.

In the evening, the deputy minister meet township level departmental officials, regional fishery entrepreneurs and workers at the office of Kayan Township Peace and Development Council.

The deputy minister gave instructions on extension of fish and prawn breeding works.

The regional fishery entrepreneurs reported on their requirements.

This morning, the deputy minister and party inspected the spawning of prawn at the prawn station of U Kyaw Soe Moe in Thakhwutpin Village, Kawhmu Township.

U Kyaw Soe Moe and officials explained benefits of breeding prawn in the earth lake.

The deputy minister gave instructions on breeding works.

(11)  50 members resign from Myinmu Township NLD

YANGON, 24 June – Fifty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu Township, Sagaing Division.

Ten members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 19 February 1999 and forty members followed suit on 15 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  Cash assistance presented to children of staff families

YANGON, 24 June – The staff welfare committee of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction presented cash assistance to children of staff families for 1999-2000 academic year at the assembly hall of the department yesterday afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Director-General of the DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw, Managing Director of Public Works U Shwe Win and officials and staff of the PW and DHSHD.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint made a speech.

The deputy minister and officials handed over cash assistance to the representatives of respective divisions.

A total of K 1.053 million was presented to 585 students.

(13)  Mine explosion claims eight lives

YANGON, 24 June – A group of insurgents led by Bo Mya mined the minibus (2Kha/ 5255) with monks and civilians aboard, which was heading from Kawkareik to Myawady in Kayin State, near Natyaykan between Alebote and Thingannyinaung Village at about 11.30 am on 23 June.

The mine explosion claimed one monk, four men and three women, and injured two monks, six men and eight women.

Authorities attended to the needs of the families of the victims and those injured in the mine explosion.

The Tatmadaw columns are in hot pursuit of the insurgents led by Bo Mya, who were extorting money, committing armed robberies, planting and exploding mines and torturing and killing innocent people with various means, turning a blind eye to the peace and welfare of the national races and disturbing peace and tranquillity and development of Kayin State.

Due to this ruthless and wicked act, local people are feeling deep repugnance at these insurgents.

Total rainfall since 1 January 1999 was 1113mm (43.82 inches) at Yangon Airport, 1409mm (55.47 inches) at Kaba-Aye and 1635mm (64.37 inches) at central Yangon.

Maximum wind speed at Yangon (Kaba-Aye) was 10 mph from west at 13:15 hours MST on 23-6-99.

Forecast valid until evening of 25th June 1999: Rain will be isolated in lower Sagaing Division, scattered in Kachin, Shan and Kayah States, Mandalay, Magway, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi Divisions and widespread in the remaining States and Divisions with isolated heavyfalls in Rakhine and Chin States and upper Sagaing Division.
