YANGON, 23 June – Union Solidarity and Development Association Executives' Advanced Management Course No 5 and Executives' Management Course No 18 concluded with a ceremony in Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 9 am today addressed by Patron of USDA Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

(2) Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime

YANGON, 23 June – The opening ceremony of the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime hosted by Myanmar for the first time was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 9 am today with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

YANGON, 23 June – Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Darussalam Mr Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim, Secretary of State for Interior of Cambodia Mr Em Saman, Commander of Criminal Investigation Corps of Indonesia Police Maj-Gen Drs DA'I Bachtiar, Minister of Home Affairs of Lao People' s Democratic Republic Maj-Gen Asang Laoly, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs of Malaysia Dato Ong Ka Ting, Under-Secretary of Interior and Local Government of the Philippines Mr Anselmo S Avenido, Minister for Home Affairs of Singapore Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology and Environment of Thailand Mr Porntep Techapaibul, Director-General of Police Department of Vietnam Senior Col Truong Huu Quoc and Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN Secretariat Mr I Robert Inkiriwang, who had attended the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today.

(4) Myanmar delegation back from Iran, Thailand

YANGON, 23 June – Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin arrived back here this evening after studying agriculture and irrigation works in Iran at the invitation of the Government of Iran.

The delegation was welcomed back at the airport by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Energy Mr Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Deputy Ministers for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow and departmental officials.

The delegation attended the Ministerial Meeting on Poverty Elimination and Progress of Agriculture in Asian region sponsored by Food and Agriculture Organization in Thailand from 14 to 15 June.

(5) Myanmar delegation visits ROK, discusses bilateral cooperation in motor, farm machine manufacturing with Daewoo

YANGON, 23 June – The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin paid a visit to the Republic of Korea from 13 to 19 June at the invitation of the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy of ROK to promote bilateral industrial cooperation and to have talks on mutual cooperation in motor and, farm machine manufacturing with Daewoo Group.

The delegation set off on 12 June by air and arrived in Seoul the following morning.

On 14 June morning, the delegation had a talk on mutual cooperation in farm machines with Mr Young-Won Kang, Managing Director of Business Group-1 (Metal & Machinery) of Daewoo Corporation at the Headquarters of Daewoo in Seoul.

That morning, they visited forklift truck, excavator and diesel engine workshops of Daewoo Heavy Industries in Inchon, the showroom of saloon, bus and lorry of Daewoo Motor in Pu-Pyaung and assembling of Lanos car.

In the evening, the delegation met with Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy of ROK Mr Chang Duck-Koo and had cordial talks on bilateral industrial cooperation.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and delegation visited Bus Division of Daewoo Motor in Pusan on 15 June morning and observed manufacturing of BS 106 and BF 105 buses there.

They visited Matiz motor plant in Changwon, Kunsan Motor Division, Daewoo Commercial Vehicle in the afternoon and spent the night in the old city of Kyong-Ju.

On 17 June, they visited an exhibition on electronics in Kumi and Daewoo's factories of TV, PCB, VCR and printed circuit board.

Later, the delegation went to Okchon where they visited farm machine factories.

They had a talk on cooperation in combined harvester manufacturing in Myanmar with Chairman of Kukje Machinery Co Ltd Mr Hyun Woo Shin and party.

Back in Seoul on 18 June, they visited Daewoo Human Space Centre at Seoul Yonsei Foundation Building

In the evening, Daewoo Group Chairman Mr Woo Choong Kim hosted dinner in honour of the delegation.

The delegation left Seoul by air on 19 June and arrived in Osaka, Japan, 1.30 pm local time.

At Osaka Hilton Hotel, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation Mr Osamu Suzuki and party and discussed with them manufacturing of Suzuki cars in Myanmar.

The delegation arrived back here on 20 June.

(6) Minister for Foreign Affairs leaves for Malaysia

YANGON, 23 June – At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar of Malaysia, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left here by air this morning to pay a goodwill visit to Malaysia.

Minister U Win Aung was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Malaysia Mr Dato Mohammad Bin Noh and embassy staff.

(7) Minister inspects development works of border region in Shan State

YANGON, 23 June – Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Director-General of the Department for Progress of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin and officials of respective working committees, inspected Nangman Hydro-electric Power Station in Special Region, east of Kengtung on 19 June morning.

The minister and party inspected TV relay station, the agricultural office, livestock breeding and veterinary office and the basic education middle school.

At Hsilu Village, the minister and party attended the ceremony of submitting membership applications of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

The minister accepted 300 USDA membership applications.

The minister met employees of various departments in Mongyan, and inspected the TV relay station, the dispensary and the basic education primary school in Hotaung Village.

The minister and party then visited the office (Hotaung Project) of UNDCP, and officials reported on facts about the project.

On 20 June, the minister inspected construction of UNDCP office, the basic education primary school and clinic in Mongpauk and the people's hospital, the telegraph and communication office, the post office, the information reading room, the agricultural office and the mobile development office in Panghsaing.

The minister and party paid homage to Bhaddanta Vijota of Kyuheik Monastery and offered Waso robes and other alms.

They also inspected the basic education middle school (Panghsaing).

In the evening, the minister and party met national race leader U Pauk Yu Chan of Special Region-2 in the meeting hall of Panghsaing.

On 21 July, the minister and party inspected Nangpan (Hsonphu) Hydroelectric Power Plant, Weingkaung Hospital, Mangmanghsaing clinic and Pangphein Village clinic and primary school.

The minister and party also offered Waso robes to three members of the Sangha in Weingkaung Monastery.

(8) Press conference on Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime

YANGON, 23 June – A Press conference on the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime took place at the Traders Hotel this evening.

It was attended by Leader of Myanmar Delegation Chairman of Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime Organizing Leading Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing and members, Commander of Criminal Investigation Corps of Indonesia Police Maj-Gen Drs DA'I Bachtiar, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs of Malaysia Mr Dato Ong Ka Ting, Under-Secretary of Interior and Local Government of the Philippines Mr Anselmo S Avenido, Minister of Home Affairs of Singapore Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Mr Porntep Techapaibul, Director-General of Police Department of Vietnam Senior Col Truong Hun Quoc Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr I Robert Inkiriwang, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Director-General of Information and Public Relations-Department U Chit Naing, Patron of Foreign Correspondents Club of Myanmar U Sein Win and President U Sao Kai Hpa and foreign correspondents, Director (News) U Hla Tun of NPE, chief-editors and officials.

Speaking at the Press conference, Minister Col Tin Hlaing said the First ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime was convened in Manila, the Philippines, in 1997, and the Second AMMTC was held two days ahead of Senior Officials Meeting as a preparatory to the Ministers' Meeting.

The Ministerial Meeting considered and adopted the ASEAN Plan of Action to combat transnational crime, feasibility study on the establishment of the ASEAN centre on transnational crime, he said and adding the meeting also considered the draft UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime and adopted the Joint Communique.

He said the highlights of what had been discussed, considered and adopted for future actions are all stipulated in the Joint Communique.

Correspondent U Aung Shwe Oo of Nippon TV asked a question about classification of types of transnational crimes.

In answer to the question, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr I Robert Inkiriwang said transnational crimes were categorized as violence, illegal narcotic drugs trafficking, arms smuggling, money laundering, trafficking in women and children, piracy, commercial crimes which are cheating of money and counterfeiting of goods, and others. Correspondent of Nihon Keizai Shimbun U Hla Htwe asked a question about work to be done before the meeting to be held in Singapore by the year 2001 as well as about possibilities of signing an agreement for extradition of criminals.

In reply to U Hla Htwe's question, Under-Secretary of Interior and Local Government of the Philippines Mr Anselmo S Avenido said it was expected to be able to make preparations for things to be done in 2001 including that matter after forming a group of experts by the year 2000, adding it depends on the report to be presented by the group of experts in August this year.

As a supplementary answer to the question, the Deputy Secretary-General said the Senior Officials Meeting is held every year as a preliminary meeting for the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, and according to the resolutions and discussions at SOM, that matter will go on at the Ministerial Meeting.

(9) 90 members resign from Shwebo Township NLD

YANGON, 23 June – Ninety members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwebo Township, Sagaing Division.

Ninety members of Shwebo Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 12 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10) 34 members resign from Laymyethna Township NLD

YANGON, 23 June – Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Thirty-four members of Laymyethna Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Laymyethna Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 7 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11) Delegates to Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime leave

YANGON, 23 June – Former Minister for Home Affairs of the Philippines and Senator Mr Robert Z Barbers and Deputy Minister for Science and Technology and Environment Mr Porntep Techapaibul and delegates left here today for home after at tending the Second ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime.

They were seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win of Myanmar Police Force and officials.

(12) Minister meets President of Daishin Sangyo Co Ltd

YANGON, 23 June – Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met President of Daishin Sangyo Co Ltd of Japan Mr Toshiomi Yuda and party who called at the MIC Office at 1 pm today.

Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(13) Micasa Hotel Apartments (Yangon) opened

YANGON, 23 June – A ceremony to open Micasa Hotel Apartments (Yangon) jointly undertaken by the Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction and Micasa Hotel Ltd on mutually beneficial basis, was held at the hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, departmental officials of the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, officials of the embassies, Managing Director of Micasa International Hotel and Resorts Mr Tan Boon Lee and officials and guests.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and Mr Tan Boon Lee made speeches and formally opened Micasa Hotel Apartments (Yangon).

The minister, the deputy minister and guests toured the hotel.
