(1) Senior General Than Shwe welcomes back Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt on his return from inauguration of President of Republic of South Africa

YANGON, 19 June - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe welcomed back Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who arrived back here from the Republic of South Africa at 3 pm today by Myanmar Airways International flight, after attending the inauguration ceremony of the newly-elected President of the Republic of South Africa, on behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar.

(2) General Maung Aye meets with industrialists in Mandalay

YANGON, 19 June - Chairman of the Central Industrial Development Committee Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye met with the industrialists and entrepreneurs of industrial zones at Kanaung Industry Hall of Model Industrial Town in Mandalay and inspected factories yesterday.

In his address, General Maung Aye said the purpose of their tour was to provide assistance for development of industrial zones in Mandalay and spoke of the need to develop industrial zones in Mandalay as in Yangon.

(3) Secretary-1 attends inauguration of newly-elected President of Republic of South Africa

YANGON, 19 June - At the invitation of His Excellency Nelson R Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa, Myanmar delegation led by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here by air on 14 June for Pretoria, the Republic of South Africa, on behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President Thabo Mbeki of the Republic of South Africa held on 16 June.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived at Johannesburg International Airport, South Africa, on 15 June morning and were welcomed by Minister of Labour Mr T.T.M. Bowini of the Republic of South Africa, Ambassador of Myanmar to South Africa U Kyaw Thu and embassy staff.

The Secretary-1 and party left there by car for Holiday Inn in Pretoria.

The following morning, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Ministers Brig-Gen Abel and U Win Aung, Ambassador of Myanmar U Kyaw Thu and Director-General of Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thura U Aung Htet, went to the Union Building in Pretoria to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly-elected President in Pretoria.

The ceremony was also attended by guests from 96 countries.

After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party together with State guests attended the lunch at the Union Building.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Ambassador of Myanmar U Kyaw Thu, attended the musical entertainment programme at State Theatre in Pretoria in the evening.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with the guests attended the dinner hosted by Government of the Republic of South Africa.

The ceremony was also attended by five royal families, 30 presidents, six vice-presidents, 11 prime ministers, six governors, the United Nations Secretary-General, deputy prime ministers, ministers and guests from 96 countries totaling 9,000 guests.

(4) Secretary-1 meets Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce and Industry in Singapore

YANGON, 19 June - On his way to attend the inauguration of President of the Republic of South Africa, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt stopped over in Singapore on 14 June.

The Secretary-1 together with Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Ambassador of Myanmar to Singapore U Myo Myint, met Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Brig-Gen (Retired) Lee Sieng Loong at his office at 4 pm local time in Singapore.

They exchanged views on regional and international issues and common interest between the two countries.

During the stop-over in Singapore today, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met Minister of Commerce and Industry of Singapore Brig-Gen (Retired) Gorge Yeo in Singapore.

They discussed bilateral economic co-operation between the two countries.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung.

(5) Myanmar delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 19 June - An eight-member delegation led by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein left here this morning for Thailand at the invitation of Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand for cooperation in fisheries and rural life between the two countries.

The delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, officials and the ministry and Myanmar Aquaculture and Fisheries Federation.

(6) USDA membership applications submitted in Kengtung

YANGON, 19 June - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Director-General of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Department Col Wunna Maung Lwin and officials of Work Sub-committees, inspected Domestic Science Training School in Kengtung on 18 June.

(7) 216 resign from Toungoo Township NLD

YANGON, 19 June - Three executives and 213 members collectively resigned from National League for Democracy of Toungoo Township, Bago Division on 17 June.

Three executives and 213 members totaling 216 of Toungoo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

A ceremony to collectively submit letters of resignation to Toungoo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission was held at Toungoo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-Commission Office on 17 June 1999.

Township Executive Member U Kyaw Myint, on behalf of the party members, explained the reason and letters of resignations were presented to Chairman U Ngwe San of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-Commission.

(8) Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN Secretariat arrives

YANGON, 19 June - Deputy Secretary-General Mr I Robert Inkiri Wang of ASEAN Secretariat arrived here by air this morning to attend 2nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime to be hosted by Myanmar.

The deputy secretary-general was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Chief of Staff (Police) Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win and officials.

The deputy secretary-general was accompanied by Assistant Director Mrs Pushpanathan and Senior Officer Mr Yong Chantha-langsy.

(9) Translation and Essay Contests to mark Population Day

YANGON, 19 June - Translation and Essay Contests to mark World Population Day for 1999 jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Immigration and Population and UNFPA were held at Population Department on Maha Bandoola Street this morning.

Present on the occasion were, Director-General Col Tin Yi of PD, Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Myo Myint and officials.

A total of 162 contestants entered in the translation contests which are divided into two divisions.

The essay contests are also divided into two-open division and basic education division.

A total of 60 contestants took part in the open division and students of Upper Myanmar (Mandalay Division) and Lower Myanmar (Yangon Division) participated in the basic education division.

(10) Myanmar delegation back from PRC, Thailand

YANGON, 19 June - Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint arrived back here this evening after attending Kunming Trade Fair and International Horticultural Exposition in the People's Republic of China from 6 to 10 June and studying wood-based industries in Thailand.

The delegation was welcomed back at the airport by officials of PRC Embassy, Ministry of Forestry and families.

General Manager of Myanma Timber Enterprise U Sein Win, Assistant General manager U Than Aung Naing and Chairman of Forest Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd U Bo Ni also arrived back on the same flight.

(11) Tourism delegation arrives back from Bangkok

YANGON, 19 June - A Myanmar delegation led by Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism arrived back here this evening after studying ancient cultural heritage and ancient buildings in Hua Hin-Ayuthaya Sukhothai of Thailand from 13 to 18 June with a view to boosting Myanmar Tourism industry.

The delegation members were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services and officials and their families.

The delegation members General Manager U Htay Aung of MHTS, Directors U Tin Pe Aye and Daw Nyunt Nyunt Than and Assistant Director Daw Kyi Kyi Aye of DHT also arrived back on the same flight.

(12) USDA members collectively donate blood

YANGON, 19 June - Hailing Myanmar Women's Day, 90 members of Hlinethaya Township USDA, Yangon North District, collectively donated blood at Defence Services General Hospital for warded Tatmadaw members, this morning.

It was attended by Commandant of DSGH Col Tin Thein Lwin and officials, Vice-Chairperson Professor Dr Daw May May Yi of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Yangon Division Working Committee for Women's Affairs Head of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Daw Mala Tint, Chairperson Daw Kyi Kyi Win of DSGH Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Executive Daw Sabai Win of Yangon North District USDA, Secretary U Nyan Win of Hlinethaya Township USDA and executive members and donors.

(13) Mr Crusher, Ms Quench contests held to mark Olympic Day

YANGON, 19 June - Mr Crusher Bodybuilding Contest and Ms Quench Physical Culture Contest which were jointly sponsored by Myanmar Bodybuilding and Physical Culture Federation and MGS Beverages Co Ltd were held at the National Theatre today to mark the 1999 Olympic Day.

It was attended by Patron of MBPCF Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and wife, Daw Aye Aye Tint, wife of the Minister for Sports, Daw Khin Khin, wife of the Mayor, Chairman of MGS Beverages Co Ltd U Thein Tun and executives and officials.

Khin Maung Htwe was first in open division of Mr Crusher Contest, Min Zaw Oo second and Zaw Thein Naing third.

In Ms Quench Contest, Saw Thiri Naing (A&I) was first, Khin Thanda (Forestry) second and Nan Yin Yin Nyunt (Cooperatives) third.

Mayor U Ko Lay presented prizes to winners in open division of Mr Crusher Contest and Brig-Gen Maung Nyo those in junior division.

Daw Khin Khin presented prizes to winners in open division of Ms Quench Contest and Daw Aye Aye Tint those in junior division.

Chairman of MBPCF YCDC Secretary Col Myint Aung presented prizes to those who won special prize for fitness and U Thein Tun winners in over-50 division of the bodybuilding contest.
