(1)  General Maung Aye inspects Mandalay International Airport Project

YANGON, 18 June - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Mandalay International Airport Project yesterday.

General Maung Aye and party then flew by helicopter to Mandalay International Airport Project in TadaU Township and were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, officials of the project, chainmen of Kyaukse District and TadaU Township Peace and Development Councils and other officials.

First, the General and party observed progress in building the runway and taxiway.

At the briefing hall of the project, the General heard a report on progress in implementing the project, building of the entrance motor-way and railroad to the airport and islets along the motor-road and planting of trees presented by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint.

(2)  Deputy PMs attend 11th Jade and Gems Sales

YANGON, 18 June - Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun arrived at 11th Jade and Gems Sales of the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited at Myanma Gems Mart this morning.

The deputy prime ministers were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing of UMEHL and officials.

The deputy prime ministers inspected bargain and auction sales of the UMEHL.

A ceremony to open the bargain and auction sales of the UMEHL was held at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

First, Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing made an opening speech and formally opened the sales.

Merchant list which have right to buy under bargain system were announced.

Then, 45 jade lots worth US $ 0.63 million and 283 lots of gems worth K 678 million were sold under auction system.

After the sales ceremony, Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and officials presented gifts to the merchants who bought the gems and jade at highest price.

(3)  Minister for Transport leaves for Singapore and Malaysia

YANGON, 18 June - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe left here by air for Singapore and Malaysia this morning to study the functions of container ships in the two countries.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe was accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Airways U Tin Hlaing Hmi and Head of Division U Kyaw Kyaw Lwin of Myanma Port Authority.

(4)  Commander inspects regional development undertakings in Hmawby, Taikkyi

YANGON, 18 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected regional development undertakings in Hmawby and Taikkyi townships in Yangon Division today.

Accompanied by Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, Secretary of Yangon At the ceremony which was sponsored by Yangon North District Working Committee for Women's Affairs at a forest plantation near Yedwingon village, the commander and party planted teak trees.

The people then planted 1,100 trees at the plantation and 750 trees on either side of Myochaung Street.

Together with officials, the commander inspected Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) Project which is covered by the Bawlekyun Bridges Project, which will link Hmawby and Htantabin townships.

(5)  Ministry of Industry-2 MCWA holds talks

YANGON, 18 June - A ceremony to talks on occupational health, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women Affairs sponsored by Maternal and Child Welfare Association of Ministry of Industry-2 was held at the cinema in Mayangon Township this afternoon.

Secretary of MCWA Daw Khin Khin Myint and Joint Secretary Daw Khin Lay Yi acted as masters of ceremonies.

Daw Moe Moe Myint extended the greetings.

Then, factory doctor Dr Sein Thaung of Ministry of Industry-2 and Head of Yankin Township Health Department Dr Nwe Nwe Oo gave talks on the prevention of accident in the factory and seasonal health disease.

Chief of Medical Officer of Ministry of Industry-2 Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave a talk on Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women Affairs.

Then, Patron Daw Moe Moe Myint thanked the officials.

(6)  Education stipend for staff families of Ministry of Sports

YANGON, 18 June - A ceremony to present education stipend for the staff families of Ministry of Sports for 19992000 academic year was held at National Sports Stadium No 1 this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win made an opening address.

Then, Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win presented cash to officials including -K 10,000 to Head of Office U Shwe Bo Sein for families of Head of Office, K 47,750 to Director U Zaw Lin for families of Admin and Finance section, K 52,750 to Director U Maung Win for families of competition and training section, K 23,250 to Director U Nyan Tun for families of public and education, K 296,000 to Director U Than Zaw for families of Sports ground and office section and K 56,250 to Director U Kyaw Soe Myint for families of Sports and Physical Education Institute.

(7)  National Convention Management Committee Chairman meets delegates getting health care

YANGON, 18 June - Chairman of National Convention Convening Management Committee Brig-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by Secretary Lt-Col Win Naung, Chairman of Invitation, Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee Col Myo Myint and Joint Secretary of Health Sub-committee Lt-Col Kyi Linn, visited delegates of the National Convention who are receiving treatment at Yangon General Hospital this morning.

The management committee chairman and party were welcomed there by Medical Superintendent Dr Min Swe and officials. Officials reported on treatment of National Convention delegates U Ko and U Kyi Aye.

Afterwards, Brig-Gen Tin Aye met the National Convention delegates.

(8)  Buddhist culture course, USDA courses conclude in Thingangyun

YANGON, 18 June - A ceremony to mark the conclusion of the Buddhist Culture Course and the Multiplier Course Nos 11, 12, 13 and 14 for USDA executives sponsored Union Solidarity and Development Association of Thingangyun Township, Yangon East District, was held at Thingangyun Township Peace and Development Council Office this morning, with an address by member of the Central Executive Committee of USDA U Aung San.

(9)  83 members resign from Palaw Township NLD

YANGON, 18 June - Eighty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Palaw Township, Taninthari Division.

Five members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthari Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Palaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 18 January 1999 and 78 members followed suit on 19 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Vietnam, Myanmar tie 0-0 in Olympic Qualifier

SHANGHAI (Xinhua), 18 June - Vietnam and Myanmar played a goal-less draw in a meaningless Asian Group Seven second leg Olympic qualifier here on Friday.

The only qualifying berth of the group has gone to the host side China, who later takes on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Vietnam, who lost 1-2 in their first leg encounter in Hanoi this May, seemed to have the upper hands in the attacking as they forced several spectacular saves from Myanmar's goalie.

YANGON, 18 June - Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo met Ambassador of France Mr Bernard Pottier who had completed his tour of duty at 1 pm today.

Also present at the calls were officials of Ministry of Health.

(12)  "Thabbagitakkama Pakathani" treatise published

YANGON, 18 June - The Department of Cultural Institute of the Ministry of Culture has published a treatise entitled "Thabbagitakkama Pakathani".

The significance of the new treatise of classical songs and music is that it includes a greater variety of songs in number and genre than the previous ones.

The book collects various pieces of music and songs such as kyo, bwe, thachingan, patpyo, yodaya, mon, dein, meekhwet kachin and leiyeikthan in 11 chapters.

(13)  Deputy Minister inspects mines, factories

YANGON, 18 June - Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, accompanied by Managing Director of No 1 Mining Enterprise U Saw Lwin, called on Commander of the North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo on 14 June and reported to him on the mines in North-East Command.

On 15 June, he attended the opening ceremony of the basic on-job training course at Namtu Mines and delivered the opening address.
