(1)  Secretary-1 to attend inauguration of President of Republic of South Africa

YANGON, 10 June - At the invitation of His Excellency Nelson R Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, on behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, Senior General Than Shwe, will attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President of the Republic of South Africa.

(2)  Secretary-2 receives D-G of Credit Management Department of China

YANGON, 10 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo received visiting Director-General of Credit Management Department of Export-Import Bank of China Mr Si Jianmin currently here on Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project and party who called at the meeting hall of Ministry of Electric Power on Lower Kyimyindine Road in Ahlon Township at 3.30 pm today.

They discussed matters relating to Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project. Also present on the occasion were Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint, Director-General of Department of Electric Power Zaw Win, Managing Director o Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Yan Naing and officials.

(3)  Secretary-2 stresses need to boost production for national development

YANGON, 10 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party left Toungoo in Bago Division by helicopter for Pyay yesterday afternoon.

On arrival at Pyay, they were welcomed by Commander of No 66 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Min and personnel concerned.

This morning, they flew by helicopter to Kangyigon Reservoir Project near Kangyigon village in Pyay Township, which is being implemented by battalions under the No 66 LID. In the briefing hall of the project, Commander Brig-Gen Aung Min reported on implementation of the project by Tatmadaw members of the military division beginning from 1 May, Director of Construction-2 of Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Ohn on rendering of technical assistance and Director-General U Myo Myint on relevant matters.

Tactical Operation Commander Col Hla Aye explained progress in building the dam and Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung provision of machinery.

(4)  Southern Command presents savings certificates to in-service disabled Tatmadawmen

YANGON, 10 June - The Southern Command presented savings certificates to in-service disabled Tatmadawmen for the first time in the meeting hall of the command in Toungoo yesterday afternoon.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the ceremony and presented savings certificates.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said Tatmadawmen are discharging their duties for the interests of the nation and the people at risk to themselves.

With regard to disabled Tatmadawmen who sacrificed their limbs and eyes in the line of duty, the Government is fulfilling the needs of their food, shelter and clothing and welfare as best it can.

He then thanked well-wishers for their generous contribution.

The disabled Tatmadawmen need to continue to work for their interest and to serve the interests of the people without losing heart with regard to their lives.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party presented to 50 in-service disabled Tatmadaw men, savings certificates which could draw K 2,500 each per month.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye also accepted K 500,000 donated by the State Peace and Development Council, K 200,000 by Thanmyanthu (Ma Hta Tha), K 100,000 each by Camp Commandant Office of the Ministry of Defence, U Zaw Tun Oo-Daw Khin Thida and family and Dr Myat Noe-Daw Yin Mar Oo and family, K 50,000 each by Daw Phyu Phyu Oo and U Nay Tun Oo.

Then, the Secretary-2 had a cordial meeting with the well-wishers and the disabled Tatmadaw men.

(5)  Deputy Premier meets China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation President

YANGON, 10 June - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met President Mr Yang Chang Heng of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation and party who called at his office this afternoon.

They discussed investment opportunities in Myanmar and bilateral economic cooperation.

Also present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

(6)  Two briquette factories opened in Mandalay

YANGON, 10 June - Two briquette factories were opened in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay, on 8 June, attended by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint.

Of the two factories, Einshinma Factory can produce 960 viss of briquettes per day and Yupatheikpan Factory has the daily production capacity of 250 viss.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Col Nay Win, Tactical Operation Commander Col Tun Kyi, Secretary of the Division Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, officials, local authorities, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross, Maternal and Child Welfare Association and the Working Committee for Women's Affairs and guests.

The commander formally opened the factories which are being operated by Township General Administrative Department.

(7)  Ministry of Forestry holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 10 June - The Ministry of Forestry held a meeting to review work done in 1998-99 and coordinate plans for 1999-2000 at Myanma Timber Enterprise this morning.

Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone attended the meeting, and gave instructions on extraction of timber, sawing of logs and timber sales.

He urged all to complete works as soon as possible, to use budgets and engine oil systematically, to minimize loss and wast-age and to work for staff welfare.

The minister inspected No-8 Saw Mill and No-5 Furniture Factory yesterday and No-1 Saw Mill, No-4 Saw Mill and No-6 Saw Mill today.

YANGON, 10 June - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority Col Thein Htay, Director-General of Marine Administration Department U Soe Win and officials left here for Mottama Dockyard Construction Project yesterday.

(9)  No 3 BED holds school family get-together

YANGON, 10 June - A school family get-together of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) was held at Sangyoung Township Basic Education High School No 2 this morning in conjunction with a ceremony to present prizes to outstanding students.

It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister Dr Than Nyunt, heads of departments under the ministry, township education officers, principals and guests.

Minister U Than Aung made a speech on the occasion.

The minister, the deputy minister and officials presented prizes to 747 students, who were outstanding in Armed Forces Day Quiz, 51st Anniversary Independence Day Commemorative Essay, Poem, TV Quiz, Computer Drawing, 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Poem, Extempore Talks, Computer Skills Contest and Painting Contest, 1998 Student Sports Festival in Chin State, the Sixth Myanmar Traditional Performing Arts Competition, Yangon Division sports tournaments, band troops competition, postcard, poster, cartoon, motto and essay competitions to collect data on narcotics cultivation and drug addicts and refresher courses for teachers and other school-related contests.

(10)  Olympic soccer team leaves for Shanghai

YANGON, 10 June - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win saw off the Myanmar Olympic soccer team led by Col Ye Tun at Yangon International Airport this morning.

The team will take part in the second leg of Asia Group 7 qualifiers for the Year 2000 Olympic Games. China, Myanmar, Vietnam and North Korea will play round robin matches in Shanghai.

They were also seen off by Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and Deputy Director General Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials.

YANGON, 10 June - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met official of International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) Mr Leon de Riedmaten who called at his office at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were Director-General U Kyaw Tun of Prisons Department and Head of Office U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(14)  Myanmar win gold, silver in Singapore Merlion Rowing Championship

YANGON, 10 June - Myanmar rowers won two gold and five silver in the Fourth Merlion Rowing Championship sponsored by Singapore Rowing Federation on 8 and 9 June.

Bo Bo Tun won the gold in junior single sculls. Ma Yamin Htay won one gold in women's single sculls, Khaing Khaing Htu, Zaw Lwin Htu, Thein Win and Zeya Lin silver in light weight quadruple sculls, Yamin Htay and Tin Kyu Kyu Khaing two silver in women's event, Bo Bo Tun and Thet Zaw Win silver in junior double sculls and Tun Myint, Zaw Lwin Tun, Thein Win and Zeya Lin silver in men's coxless fours.

(15)  Working committee for tree planting meets

YANGON, 10 June - Working committee for tree planting in commemoration of Myanmar Women's Day held a co-ordination meeting at Social Welfare Department this afternoon.

It was attended by Chairperson of working Committee for Observance of Myanmar Women's Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Vice-Chairperson professor Daw Mya Mya Yi and committee members.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe explained the tree planting programme.

Those present took part in discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe.

(16)  Fourth Myanmar-India Central Level Joint Narcotic Drugs Control Meeting held

YANGON, 10 June - The Fourth Myanmar-India Central Level Joint Narcotic Drugs Control Meeting was held at the Forest Guest House in Shwetaunggya Street today.

Leader of Myanmar delegation member of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, and leader of Indian delegation Secretary of Revenue Mr J A Chowdhury made speeches.

Discussions focused on implementations of tasks upon the minutes of the third meeting, Myanmar-India joint narcotic drugs control activities, precursors and amphetamine type stimulants (ATS) control, conducting of high level courses for task forces and exchange of information.

(17)  27 members resign from Kyaukse Township NLD

YANGON, 10 June - Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-seven member of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 2 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(18)  24 members resign from Gyobingauk Township NLD

YANGON, 10 June - Twenty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Gyobingauk Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-four member of Gyobingauk Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Gyobingauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 30 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
